Gone through on my old trail, gone through on fresh tracks, gone through in the middle of the day and in the wee hours of the morning. So icepicks, like a really expensive raincoat are no good when hung up on the wall at camp so I'd carry them with me all the time just to get used to the idea of having them. Anyway my best advise is to keep a really cool head and have super good reflexes when things start to go south, know what keeps you from getting out and how to get out. And the best place to carry your picks is velroed to the sleeves of your coat. Its not practical but they're right where you need them when the time comes.
