Obesity a driving factor in COVID-19 deaths

Well it's about time we see this headline...comorbidity issues (in this case obesity) were the primary cause of over 90% of the deaths attributed to Covid.

But we've heard very little about that, instead they said Covid was disproportionately affecting 'racialized' communities, blaming poverty etc...but as this study show, it was because they were Obese.

Why not call a spade a spade...they died because they were too fat..leading to associated health issues like diabetes and high blood pressure.

Good post! I read an article quite a while back about how obese people have a lot of fatty tissue around their respiratory tracts, which creates an ideal situation for inflammation from the viral infection to kill them. Made sense, but didn't hear much more about it. You know, kind of the same way it is for most of the covid-related stuff that makes any sense, you don't hear much of it.

Its a shame you do not have the common sense to associate cheap food sources with poor communities. This type of food is eaten because its cheap and very available in the U.S. Obesity has now been linked to gut microbiota and its health. Given that people are now using anti biotics from a yonge age and the microbes which were good are wiped out obesity is on the rise.
Countries like Japan and South Korea have lower levels of obesity because they eat healthier food's, fresh fish ,fresh vegetables. Lot's of studies on obesity and its causes and its an over simplification to say people who are fat caused their own problems.

Not really remember we are talking the USA here. Its cheap if you want to compare it to food that is good for you.

Go out and buy yourself a nice piece of wild caught salmon and make a salad with Avocados, tomatoes,... glass of red wine and you get the idea.

Obesity for sure has a huge effect in recovering from any sort of illness. can not be disputed.

but poverty increases the chance of getting the Virus to begin with. Alot ppl have been working from home for the past 1+ year. not everyone can do that. it also effects ones nutrients, alot of the cheaper foods that fill you up lack macro nutrients and vitamines and so on. ... personal Hygiene could be another one.

Well maybe this will scare some into thinking twice before they put that MCrap stulff et all in their system, but I really doubt it.

Ever check out the fat food outlets in Canada, they are always full of people and not poor people. Cost more to eat at a fast food place then to eat at home.

Buy McDonald's for a family of 4. 40 bucks minimum. I can make a nutritious meal at home for under 20 bucks. I'm the cook 6 out of 7 nights a week.

People don't get fat because they're poor and have to make poor eating choices, they get fat because they are too lazy to shop and cook and opt for a drive to McDonald's instead.

They are not assertions. I suggest you go buy 4 meal combos at any local fast food chain. Compare that to the price of a rice/potatoes, vegetables and meat dish at home for 4. It's half the cost.

There are other ways to get fat of course, but those who claim "it's cheaper to eat fast food" are full of it.

I think your getting mixed up about the cost of food and causes of obesity, the science on obesity is related to the health of your guts and stomach, that is the reference to the latest science.

Sugar and fast food combined with laziness is the driving force of obesity in North America.
If I'm not mistaken North Americans have some of the highest numbers of diabetes in the world.
Asian countries are much lower in obesity for sure. Fish and rice has zero sugar, low fat. Pizza-Hut, McDonald's, not so good.

Not mixed up at all.

As I said there are other ways to get fat, but it's predominantly inactivity and poor diet. If you remember, it was you who originally brought up the "cheap food sources".

I'm well aware of how it all works, I went from 188 lb to 152 lb within the last year by cutting out booze and fast food. Doctor confirmed this week there wasn't anything wrong with my guts that either originally increased my weight or decreased my weight, just got into some poor habits then got myself out of them.

You can eat healthy and not break the bank, but you have to shop and cook your own food.
I can purchase a 7 pound roast for about 20-23$ and a 20lb bag of rice for 20$.

Claiming poverty is root cause of obesity should know the price calculation principles of any food joint.
If You buy the food (does not matter at McDonalds or at The Keg)You are paying 3.3 times more then You would pay IF you would make that very same meal at home.

No brainer, buy quality food for 50 % of McDonalds price-and cook it Yourself.
Only catch may be-that there is work involved there.

For the gut issues ,there is an ages old calculation to help:

if one needs 2500 KCal a day, one needs to eat 2500 K Cal a day.

No kidding, for the price of one fast food burger I can buy a pound of ground and make four burgers with fixings for the same price and I actually know what's in the food I'm eating. The real shame is that Gilly isn't intelligent enough to realize that, but no surprise there lol.

I would think a ( not the) main cause in the US. Is the portions served. Whether at home, or at Golden griddle, or the Keg. Americans over eat.....

Then, we have junk food. Chips, pop, Twinkies, ice cream, pizza, frozen dinners, and processed crap. All very cheap relative to expensive vegetables, meat and organic.

The disadvanted.
Tend to be in poor health. They don’t eat well, don’t have access to healthcare, and memberships at swank gyms. They die years before the haves, Covid or no.Wonder why...

And while they certainly don’t eat out a ton gobbling down super sized portions loaded with gravy. But they do eat crap. Lots of it.

That doesn’t mean they too aren’t in poor health or obese. Mac and cheese has been a staple of college kids for generations.

Has ravaged “have nots”. They tend to live in high density housing. 3,000 sq foot eye sores and jonesing and showing off their wealth not for them. High rises, row housing, packed in like sardines. You know why most people are fat? They take in more calories than they burn. It's not any more complicated than that.

Yes there are things like thyroid issues or any other medical reason you can dig up but those people are in the minority.

People use all kinds of different excuses to justify their weight instead of accepting personal responsibility for their situation. Again, I agree, there are people in special circumstances but they are in the minority. Excuses and passing blame are easy, this is the route most people take with regards to their weight and other things in their lives.

There is one factor-some ppl get in the vicious circle, and they have hard time getting out from it. Where society PLUS Governement could help?-with encouraging healthy eating habits from the get go,and providing a culture of easily available(do not mean low cost, when saying available-but READILY available)healthy food.

Just a couple weeks ago, FB, and tv were filled with ads and platters of Nachos dripping with cheese. Chicken wings smothered in sugar loaded BBQ sauces.

Super sized helpings of everything. 20 ounce steaks, and 20 twinkies.

I know a person who thinks they eat healthy. Lots of chicken, pork, some greens, spuds. And everything smothered in butter/margarine, sauces and sugar.

Contributing to obesity are fast food and junk food companies spending billions to bombard the airwaves promoting unhealthy food. Try watching television when you are very hungry to see how often fast food is advertised.

Your right...they knew early on comorbidity issues were going to drive up the death numbers yet they did little help people shed pounds for the past year....actually discouraged it, stay home, watch TV.

Well the standard now by British researchers taking into consideration the above is easy to determine if you obese:

Take a measurement of your Total Height, half it in two and then measure your waist with that half, if you cant go under that your obese. Lot of you folk's are in for a big surprise.

And there are people that can eat whatever they want and not gain weight. People's bodies are different, metabolisms are different. Everyone is looking for a magic bullet to lose weight without doing the work. Your gut biome does affect your health but if you eat over what your body needs you are going to get fat no matter what your gut biome looks like.

They don't think they are obese because they really aren't. They are obese in the same way that having 5 drinks at the same occasion once a month makes you a binge drinker as defined by the The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)

We also need to look into the term obese and the range it encompasses. When they talk about it being a comorbidity for COVID I don't think they are talking about normal 6ft 200lbs guys carrying around and extra 20 or 30 pounds. I think they are talking more about the pornography type definition "I can't describe it but I know it when I see it".

Also 80 people in a study by British researchers is a curiosity not a new standard.

Let’s also not forget that it’s not just “fast” food... in the last few years the rise of UberEats, SkipTheDishes, etc must have contributed to the obesity epidemic, in especially so when stay-at-home orders are in place and the govt is encouraging their use (I’d also like to help restaurant owners)

So i'm fat so what, I enjoy life and food.

I have a heavy mid section myself I know where it comes from. Not alot of fast food more the carb intake and high calories ad a few liters of chocolate milk to the mix lol. It's just the belly the last pregnancy with the wife really got to me and never left.

I eat well what can I say but it's only my belly . Looks like a big beer belly but nope no beer for this guy.

Not preaching to you my friend but eliminating sugar can go a long way in reducing belly fat. Lots of it in chocolate milk.
If you have a sweet tooth try eating a very small amount of dark chocolates. Eliminate the rest. Your body will love you for it.

Back when the fiancé was diagnosed, we did a lot of research. Her sister being a nutritionist didn’t hurt. We have drastically changed our diet. Some by choice, some not.

Have virtually cut out all sugar we can. The only raw sugar we have in the house is for the odd recipe. I feel bad for company when they want tea or coffee. :)
