A New One For Me

Not a new dog but a new problem. Little history first. Last year or so I brought my setter to the vet. We figured he'd eaten some wood, it got lodged in his gums and infected a gland in behind his eye. The eyeball bulged out in a most grotesque manner. Through medication and mortgaging the house the problem eventually cured.
So, this morning my wife takes the dog on his usual walk on the lease because he still wants to eat just about anything he comes across. They get home and the dog gets his treat then crashes on the couch as he usually does. Only this time he becomes very lethargic very quickly. He can't stand, or raise his head, simply won't move and seems to react in pain when I touch him. I put him on a blanket, slide him to the door so I can get him closer to the car. We're off to the vet.
He's still staggering all over the place.
We now have a diagnosis but I'm going to let you folks have a kick at the outcome. Your thoughts about what was going on then I'll come back and let you know the verdict.

Giardia- drinking contaminated water?

Very generalised symptoms.....Lyme disease ? ..

Yep! High as a kite. And we have no idea where or how he got into the stuff. Cigarette butt or whatever seems the best bet. Vet says she's seeing this more and more.

oh wow! VERY INTERESTING, could have gotten it from anywhere realistically, alot of kids like to smoke on catwalks, ravines, parks etc could have easily picked up a roach there some how.

alot of you guys really know your stuff LOL, might as well ask the forum instead of the vet!

Snap my daughter dog had the same event a couple of month's ago when she visited with a friend who's brother is into that stuff, got hold of an edible from the floor and same problem with associated vet bill, he felt bad and paid the bill.

Whatd I win? Lol. I nice long snooze....and hopefully will bounce back in the morning. Glad it wasn't a major issue..

Time to use a muzzle so he can't snoop and scoop the garbage.

A muzzle is not a bad idea. I've considered one of those shock collars in the past but those things seem to be more of a punishment than it does a deterent. As it is now I could save a small fortune on dog food as he seems to thrive on Tim's cups, old kleenex, sticks and dogs feces.

my dog use to get into the kittys litter box and make a friggen mess when she was a puppy, super gross too LOL

Good thing he’s ok. It was on the news here too a dog ate some buzz candies on the side of a trail. They though he was having a seizure of sort. Turns out he was high like a kite.

Geez SB, what kind of neighbourhood do you live in?

LOL Unbelievable we have to deal with weed butts now. I though people smoked them to the very end?

depends how good it is i guess! LOL

My wife's Rotti was terrible for picking up and eating anything she can find out on walks, rabbit poop, small sticks even gravel. I collar conditioned her on sit (a command she knows well) with the e-collar I train my gundogs with. I then taught he "leave it" with light nicks. The collar conditioning took longer than the training but she is no problem on walks now. She has largely given up eating stuff but if she does look interested in something we only need say "leave it".

Used properly the e-collar is not a punishment. I think of it more like a tug on a leash only your leash is 300 yards long. I think most dogs would rather learn this way than wear a muzzle every time they are out.
