Took the wife and dog for a walk out back to our hunting grounds. Apparently the porcupines are on the hit list, nasty buggers visited my ground blind in the last couple weeks. Real piss off indeed

They are on my hate list as well, I have built several permanent closed in elevated deer stands over the last 20 years and seems like about every 2 years a porky decides to eat a hole through the plywood and take up residence in one of them leaving piles of crap and stinking piss and quills all over. Needless to say what their fate is when I meet up with one.

The price of plywood makes ammunition seem cheap!
When I worked in the woods in NS, we were under instructions to kill every porky we saw. But now a day's I will give them a pass and less I see a lot of fresh damage.
Any future blinds will be metal sided..our wood one's now have chicken wire wrapped around the bottom...Quote:

Their 'stink' is a great cover scent and I don't mind the smell of it.
I had one years ago take up residence in the hunt camp outhouse while away for a period of time.
What a stinking mess it made. Ended up condemning it and building a new one.
I also had a German short hair pointer who tangled with one once as well. Mouthful of quills / fistful of vet dollars.
Skunks and porkies are simply not fun to have around.
I am so fortunate! I had to put my 13 yr. old Husky to rest awhile ago and fortunately, amongst all the other shenanigans he put me thru, there was never a porky involved. It would have been bad with him, since he was very aggressive with anything resembling prey. He never did learn what a skunk was or what they could do? LOLQuote:

First spring that we bought our deer camp I put out corn and molasses in March. Staked it out 14 days at sunset. Killed 13 porkies. Since than we have done the same thing every spring but now only get one every second or third year.
When I moved to the Thunder Bay Area in 1990, there were porcupines everywhere. Now there are hardly any around, in fact I haven’t seen one in years. It’s like they caught a disease or something and died off.
I've only seen them middle of fields when walking to our blind in the early early morning.
I also get them on my cams but it seems like they only come around at night time.

They do like the bonding glue in plywood! Easy solution is just use boards instead of plywood in your construction. Never had them touch anything made out of cedar or pine boards. Never had a problem with our dogs getting into them. We've always trained our labs to "leave it" when we encounter one on the ground. I'm sure I'll change my opinion pretty quick if I have a dog in the future that likes to tangle with them.

Ive shot a big buck few years ago with quills in his nose, a coyote COMPLETELY covered head to tail in quills

I've come across a couple while walking my dog in the county forest, one was a too close for comfort encounter he was maybe 10 yards and the dog bolted to take a bite and I yelled so loud he stopped dead and looked at me, thankfully. They can sure make mess in a hurry.

We see them in North Dakota while bird hunting. I was surprised to see them out there as there really isn’t any pine forests anywhere. My drahthaar grabbed ahold of one and killed it which resulted in a long drive to Dickinson to find a vet on a Sunday. Luckily, one of our hunting group is a vet in Ontario and helped with the quills that continued to emerge for several days after the incident. My old wirehair got swiped by one out there a couple years before but it was buried too deep in brush for him to get hold of. I am very cautious in any cover now where porcupines may call home. I have been told that with the German breeds, they don’t avoid them after getting quilled, they seek them out with an appetite for destruction.
Most dog breeds do not learn anything from the experience. Its not just the German ones.Quote:

went turkey hunting the other day and took 2 of them out for the land owner. he appreciated it, said they've been making a mess recently
