From someone who posts pics every fall of Woodcock with their beaks stuck into a broken off piece of cabinetry screwed to a tree..
"Stage 5"...?

Don't worry I've upgraded my hunting skills.

Yes I celebrate every day I'm out be it a full card or nothing. Shame there is always an arm chair critic.
Wonder why some post such things?
Lets take a pause and reflex on how to make a more active and inclusive forum.
Took the bait of a troll and derail a thread apologies.
Question does this promote or destroy ones desire to add content to this outdoors forum?
Would you have me stop posting tales?
Hardly do it for my glory but to honour the stars of the show my dogs and share with my community.
You members be the judge.
I joined this forum to learn, and share, and maybe find like minded ppl/ mentors for hunting and fishing
so I am with u 100%.
referring to that specific thread. ppl are jumping on the user for wanting to hunt a specific turkey and not just anything moving !! thats very short sighted and makes ppl not want to share.
alot of angry ppl judging away from the couch here.... they all used to be good hunters I assume..
Don't agree with these 5 stages anyways....not sure what category I'd fall into anyways. I've hunted long enough I don't care about limits, But I still don't like getting skunked and I sure as hell don't just do it to get "out of the house" that's what bad hunters say LOL
Pretty hard to please everyone. Had people get mad at me for laying my gun on animals I've shot, Not covering up blood before pictures taken. F em, Who cares I post and follow hunting stories for the content and maybe learn a few things, Don't care if anyone likes it or not to be honest. Not online anyways

Totally agree.
Last year I posted about hitting a deer with buckshot and searching for it for hours with no luck on finding what would have been my first deer.
The replies were positive at first,
Then the critics come and start to bash and assume things like they were there beside me hunting with me.
I agree 100% this makes people not want to post anything.
Same with if someone tells a story and something is not up to someone's standards with the type of gear etc one is using and makes the op out to look stupid for not using something they may not even known existed in the first place.

"In the 5 stages of hunting
1. In the Shooting Stage, you just want to shoot things.
2. In the Limit Stage, numbers matter.
3. The Trophy Stage is about being selective.
4. In the Method Stage, how you hunt and take game become more important than how much game you take.
5. In the Sportsman Stage, you are more interested in the whole experience than in “bagging” game.
Other than the first two Newbie stages harvesting weighs very little.
From his account I think the OP has already elevated himself to stage 5 and feels justly rewarded"
It was in reply to your response to this. The implication being that you've progressed past that stage.
Came across as "holier than thou". Just trying to keep your feet on the ground as I reflex on your past posts.
Can I get my status changed from "borderline spammer" to "forum killer"?…..
Guess in your haste to try and crucify me you missed the fact I wasn't referring to myself but to the OP. Might want to reflect on why you jumped on me in such a personal attack and move on as it does no one any good.
Post some stories of your adventures which might be of more interest to the community and others may do the same.
There’s a reason people don’t post reports on this forum anymore.
5 Stages of an OOD Forum Member Who’s New to Hunting:
1 - The posting stage, where you post as much as possible sometimes without purpose
2 - The report stage, where you start becoming successful and figure “hey, I’ll post some pics”.
3 - The burned stage, when someone collects the metadata from your photo or is an overzealous internet scouter and burns you
4 - The pissed off stage, when you pick fights with anyone you can.
5 - The “I’ll post every once in a while” stage when you figure you’ll chime in to offer some advice where you feel it’s needed and somehow get called a “troll”.
-N.
Debating opinions and arguments are certainly a part of life, but constantly beating the same old horse and resurrecting feuds from weeks, months, years Ago, are what keep newer users from posting.
If anybody comes here to prove their worth in the world I feel sorry for them. We all come here to kill some time chewing the fat or reading about other people's adventures, even for advice and tips. Who really cares what a person you've never met or cared for does in their own time. You aren't going to change anybody's mind by badgering them online. I personally enjoy criticism when it comes from a place of good nature.
I don't think I replied to any posts for over a year after opening my account specifically because of the negative and aggressive attitude from a few users. So I can see why there aren't a ton of new members posting threads or contributing to the forum.
"Crucify" seems a little melodramatic. The Forum could use an upgrade re posting pics without a 3rd party host.
Reflecting and carrying on...
We reading the same post ?
I never read anywhere where ppl were "jumping on the user" for wanting to hunt a particular turkey. He related a story and while still enjoying his days afield, seemed to be looking for a little direction on becoming successful in the future.
What I do find interesting is certain people on this forum who enjoy preaching their hunting virtues first then attempt to bait or provoke others, hoping their replies get them suspended for negative conduct. Almost like they have nothing better to do and quite childish.
Dave, you are a big part of the problem. What stuck in my craw, and I suspect be2man as well is you ironically posted this “5 stages of a hunter” thing when you come off as one of the most obsessed braggers on the board with an fixation on body count. Hey, if that blows your skirt up, fine with me. Just don’t preach from a tall horse.
Your behaviour is not exclusive to OOD either. Your irritating posts rub people on other boards as well. Difference is, you are not a moderator on those boards and can’t delete posts you don’t like.
I finally had enough of your preaching about spring dog training on wild birds and accused you of being obtuse. Not insulting or inflammatory IMO, but you deleted my post.
Others have called you out when you publicly refused to contribute to Hullett’s pheasant program, but quite enjoyed harvesting their birds...and complaining about it. This caused you to “leave in disgust” (your words not mine).
I agree there should be some reflection....it should be you.
Mod must be having a bad week?
I got this yesterday. WTF?
"Please post topics in the appropriate sub forum. Have had to more almost all your post to political section."
Hey Sprite wasn't referring to you. Was reffering to a personal pot shot taken at me.
Thought a pm to remind you if your comments are important at least have the coutesy to post it in the right subforum. If its not that important to you than I'll just post hole threads in the wrong forum
Steve thing is you and I have very different views. Thing is I've move on from trying to change the minds of the differently capable.
Its only here I've encountered sour grapes and think my posts are quite enjoyed on real upland forums
In the end you do you and I'll do me
Odd community forum killers.
Good title not that I've been a member that long but that would be a minor detail as a spade is a spade in my books. If someone on here does like what I have posted in the past oh well but I will say I have always been a proud member of the OFAH for the last 33 years and after being a member of this site and seeing how liberal it is I will say I have now joined the NFA and the CCSA and Will not be renewing my OFAH membership this year as I will not support a organization that supports the censorship or has the liberalism's as this site has.
Cheers tigboy304
Once proud member of the ofah.
Forum killers in my opinion:
Allowing constant mantra ,i mean on and on and on ,for certain individuals, go endlessly with pushing 90 % of the readers towards their goals(while-for a reason unknown to me,some of that calmed down a bit lately)
Lack of transparency from the Forum for actions taken on Members ,by the Forum (lack of notification for actions-i got once few post removed, with no apparent explanation, and not having it different then many other threads going on merrrily)
Lack of deep dive to support memebrs(once asked for help with posting pictures-emptying my uploaded pictures-where did that go...?Not everyone here is Bill Gates )
Forum members jumping onto each other with cutthroat attitude -even if there was no apparent challenge(big one for me)If one debates and get heated debate -it is one thing, but kicking someone just because ?)I am a big boy,and do not loose sleep over it -but for sure it is a turndown.
ood has managed to alienate a lot of the very experienced hunters. Nowhere is this more apparent than the gundog/upland and retriever/waterfowl forums.
While I don't always see eye-to-eye with FFF, that this isn't a "real" hunting forum is bang-on.
Seems to be mostly a politics and bickering forum. A lot of what gets posted here would be ridiculed off "real" hunting forums.
Bingo. I'm always hoping to log-on and find detailed hunting stories that I might learn something from, but there's only a hand full of members that do that. Click the 'new post' button and it's 90% off topic & politics section traffic. But, I suppose that's a representation of the demographic that's left on here
Very sad. Why did I click on?
I know it's summer and alot have plans and are outdoors and all but since the mass migration of good forum members this board has almost gone silent. It's too bad that things have gone the way they have. Hopefully things turn around soon. Cheers all.
I won't exclude myself in the finger pointing, since I got into the odd kerfuffle over the years. Some members did take it to the extreme however and if I had to guess, it mostly involved politics. IMO that thread/subject should be removed entirely from the forum. I have friends and relatives that I avoid talking politics with, as it can and does raise the hackles of many. Throw together a bunch of strangers on a forum and it doesn't take long for the gloves to come off and mayhem erupts.
I too have noticed the exodus of many long standing members. Some will be gone for good and others might be back as time moves on? I'm hoping the void will be filled with some interesting stories, tales and suggestions from like minded folks.
Am I the only one that has noticed that for the last 4-5 years it’s been the same group of people posting in all the sections. Where are the other members chipping in? Things are bound to get stale when it’s the same old stories.
Not everyone is inclined to post left right and centre. Some do it once in a while only.
That is one of the reasons the forum should "work"with the members.Retention comes to my mind.
We have lost a LOT of high performers!A lot!
I would also say-the "medium "performers also clawed back their involvement greatly, I would say.
What is behind that?
Loss of interest, loss of trust ,disagreement with the current state of affairs, lost long time companions, just because ...?
Thus-the Forum suffers greatly.....i hope the mass exodus, triggered by unhappiness and difference of opinions how things should be approached on the very Forum will not cause demise of the Forum itself.
Time will tell.
So far -there is 1000 guests,15-20 members only on average day(and this includes the Higher Ups also-not that they should not be on,just their presence inflates the real number of member activity)
So far i have yet to see the once "presented theory-"out with the old,in with the new - to be working.
No offence to the new me members though.....
Well with 17,509 members and counting one would think the board would see more traffic but unfortunately that's not the case. Like already mentioned it's only a few regulars that post and alot of them have moved on to greener pastures I guess. As far as the political section goes I would vote to keep it and if someone doesn't want to participate That’s fine it's as easy as not clicking on it. Cheers.
That's a pretty good insight. All but 1 member left or were disinvited due to their conduct in the Off topic section be it politics or covid. Seemed fanaticism to be "right" no matter which side of the coin you were on lead to quite disruptive behaviour. Hopefully the site will move on. The bitterness and complaining subsided in favour of a more you do you and I do me philosophy in which the need to be right at all cost isn't the focus.
There are two ways we can improve the forum. Avoid controversial topics. Post topics of general interest that are non-political related to hunting, shooting and fishing.
I come to this website/forum to: relax, day dream about my sport, to learn something new, find out what is happening in Ontario in the world of hunting, fishing & shooting, and sometimes provide my advice/observations which are relevant to the topic. All the stuff about politics, vaccines, protests, etc. is not why I come here....and frankly I wish those who focus on these issues find another forum for the thoughts & opinions. Over the past few years, I am lucky to find 25% of the daily posts which interest me...the rest I ignore and don't read. This forum needs a Mission Statement and enforce it.
I don't mind the politics. When it is regarding firearms and legislation or proposed legislation it directly impacts or could impact my hunting.
Sure the covid was maybe a stretch for an outdoor forum... where do you draw the line?
With the way things are being manipulated or censored, I would rather just ignore the posts than not have them show up at all.

A couple of months ago,I decided to exit the political forums, permanently. I also limited what news I watched avoiding the doom-and-gloom channrls completely. It's amazing to me the incredible difference it's made in my outlook on life and general well-being. I don't regret that decision for one minute and I certainly don't miss it. FWIW,in fact,I highly recommend it.
Been a member here for almost 10 years. I don't post for a lot of the aforementioned reasons.
Based on another forum I belong to with over 300k members, here's my opinion: the issue is politics.
The problem: OOD is owned by OFAH which requires significant political involvement and outdoor pursuits are often seen as politically polarizing so it's unlikely OFAH has a desire to separate politics from OOD Community Forum.
My suggestion: OFAH gets their own forum and all of the politics goes there. ALL politics on OOD Community Forum would be forbidden and that would have to be enforced .
The result: OOD Community Forum becomes a place to share stories, ideas, successes, failures, ask for help/guidance and mentorship without fear of starting some stupid political bickering.
