New penalties for stunt and aggressive driving announced by the Ontario government in April have now taken effect across the province.

However, with changes under the Moving Ontarians More Safely Act, the criteria for stunt driving drops to 40 km/h or higher if the driver is operating the vehicle on a road that has a speed limit of 80 km/h or less. Stunt driving on roads with a posted limit of 80 km/h or higher will still be when someone is going 50 km/h or higher above the limit.

Another change in the law involves impounding vehicles that are stopped at the roadside. As of July 1, the vehicle will be immediately impounded for two weeks — up by a week.

So 100 in a 60 is now “stunt driving”

I agree with keeping people slowed down in residential areas where there may be kids playing, but there are an awful lot of country roads north of Oshawa (and likely many many other areas) where I think the speed limit is unnecessarily low….getting a stunt driving charge there doesn’t seem right

The crotch rocket jerks who drive 120 on my 80kmh concession road deserve everything that get's thrown at them and should that include a good beating if some of the locals catch them so be it.

A lot of wide open rural roads around Bradford with almost no houses close to the road are 60 zones and the same seems to be creeping over to the east side of the lake, I also agree with enforcement in residential areas, I really don't see this change making a big difference anyway. The only time people seem to drive that fast is before dawn when the biggest hazard is to themselves.

To be honest I was let go with a $50 ticket on a gravel road at 55 over a long time ago and I know a couple other guys who have had the same treatment when the circumstances make sense.

Let's see.... they guy I saw last week going to the cottage that passed about 5 cars and ended up forcing the oncoming car to stand on the breaks or have a head on would qualify, flying and no clue on judging distance it seems. The guy that zoomed past a long chain of cars and forced an oncoming 18 wheel truck to take to the gravel last summer too.... both should loose their licence forever I would say if there are no extenuating circumstances, a few other personal examples I can think of seeing like the guy on my side street that T-boned another car doing 120 according to the police reporting of it .. think of some high schoolers I knew... dead people don't make it home so.

I couldn't agree more! Personally, I don't care if it's in a residential zone or not. There could be kids out for a bike ride or folks out for a quiet walk down a country road. I've even told the OPP they were welcome to sit in my driveway with a radar, but they haven't taken me up on it yet?

I agree. There are the odd exception that end up doing maneuvers beyond their capability. The 404SB at 5am runs around 145 every day and almost no accidents, for example. 407 is at 150+ in the hammer lane at most times of the day. The problem comes when there are cyclists, pedestrians, and slow moving vehicles as has been mentioned. That's when things get dangerous and people don't have the respect to slow down and move over.

Our concession road is rural although monster homes are starting to pop up. It is hilly, many twists, several hidden driveways (including mine,) lots of cyclists and frequent slow moving farm vehicles. I've got just under 500 meters of frontage and don't want some crotch rocket creep's roadside memorial on my fence line.

Seems to me that speed limits should be set to reflect winter driving conditions, not summer. So a back road that can be driven safely in the summer at 80kph would be a death trap in the winter at that speed, especially for novice drivers.

Not only novice drivers but the nitwits that think 4x4 and AWD is invincible.

I was told when I started driving, think of the dumbest person you know. They have a driver's license.

I still can't help but think some driving laws are more towards revenue under the guise of public safety. Sounds familiar doesn't it?

When drivers speed,they often overdrive not only their own capabilities,but,those of the vehicle they're driving. No ordinary vehicles have high performance steering and suspension systems or tires suitable for high speed. Speed limits are set by MTO engineers to match optimum driving conditions for the type of roadway. It takes only a split second misjudgement to set events in motion that eliminate any chance of recovery usually with tragic results. The worst multiple fatality MVC's I was ever called to occurred on "back country" highways and county roads.

Speed limits are set based on a roads design speed, all larger roads and new roads have a design speed. Usually the posted limits are 20 to 30 kph under the design speed which does take winter driving (not during a storm) in to account.

Long way of saying that's how it is done now aside from old roads and forced roads.

Decaptitated by seatbelts? I think your tow truck buddy was zingin' you. Granted,seatbelts aren't the be-all and end-all because some crashes are so horrific that nothing would save a driver,but,by and large,more people survive who were wearing seatbelts than those who weren't. 75% of the county and secondary road fatalities I was sent to were single vehicle roll overs where the driver was ejected. Seat belts definitely would have increased their odds of survival exponentially. The worst I ever saw was a body found 25' up in tree. The next were drivers absent where we had a wreck with no one around until the tow truck uprighted the vehicle. The dead driver was underneath. Again,seatbelts would have likely prevented deaths.

Then I think the argument is that they should raise those road's limits to 80 ... but if a speed limit genuinely needs to be 60 km/h ... going 100 km/h is a bit insane, I have to admit. This coming from a guy that owns an Audi TT RS. Save it for the track.

110-120 is kinda norm here.

Mother nature seems to be pretty good at taking care of those in the lower skill set who speed in cars and motorcycles and I am pretty OK with that, but its the collateral damage they cause and lives' lost that is upsetting.

The rural roads around me are posted at 80 and I very often follow the Police doing 100. As long as your under 100 around here you are fine.

I remember when I first moved to Ottawa in 1993 I thought the Highway 417 through Ottawa was the autobahn. I use to drive my little Suzuki GS 400 down the highway at full throttle. I got pulled over once and I know exactly how fast the bike could go. The bike said I was doing 170 and the cop said he got me at 167. He asked why I was going so fast, had to think quick and I told him my Girl Friend in Carleton Place was sick and I had to get there. He let me go and told me to slow down. Good thing he did not look closely at my back pack as the tip of my rod was just sticking out slightly.

I once made it my GF from Vanier to Carleton Place in her driveway under 20 minutes, I lucked out and hit all green lights to the highway and by the time I got on the ramp to the highway I was on full throttle, think I went down St Laurent street around 150

It's always about the collateral damage ... the family or the children that get wiped out because of some idiot who thinks he's Hamilton in his beat up truck.

I get a kick out of people who think they can drive in the same manner on slippery roads as they do on dry roads because they happen to have a AWD or 4X4. I like to tell them it'll only get them into trouble twice as fast.

I used to drive up to North Bay on weekends as a younger man to visit the university, I drove an 88 Chevy pickup 2wd with $20 used tires through some of the worst conditions I've seen. Guess who the ones upside down in the ditch were? Or in the median up against the rocks. Always the fancy SUV that ripped past 10 minutes earlier.

I think a lot of people are unable to "feel" the road and that's why we have all of these computerized features to correct their faults. In reality it's more like a participation trophy that gives them false confidence.
