A question for Generation X and Millennials

Im wondering if any of you do not use social media other than message forums such as this one.

the reason i ask is because ive totally deleted all my social media accounts about 2 and a half years ago, maybe longer (after id say being addicted heavily at one point) and ive noticed a few things.

• when i go to bed i fall asleep WAY quicker than i use to be able to. use to take me over an hour to fall asleep once in bed. now i fall asleep within 20 minutes max, with the Tv on .
• way less phone calls and text messages. basically only talk to 2 people other than family members now
• been able to focus way more
• can maintain eye contact
• have come to peace with my own goals and my plan for the future without worrying about other people
• been reading books way more
• i do sometimes feel like im missing out on some stuff but when i honestly start to think about it more i find myself i dont really care to be honest lol.
• feel way more confident in myself

love to hear if any of you dont use any as well but use to at one point and what you guys think,

I haven't logged onto Facebook on almost or about 10 years . No twitter no snap chap no instagram.

Use YouTube, Google, the weather app's and 3 fishing site's. That's it I don't play video games soon I may abandon YouTube Google as the censorship is becoming to much.

My wife told me I have to go through my Facebook if she goes before me. She post to me all the time but I never see it lol.

Lol! I do find myself browsing YouTube as well more and I also only use a few apps. I do play video games though but not as much as before.

Although, I work in IT industry :

No TV, no Twitter, Snapchat or any of that stuff

GPS on my phone gets enabled only for IHunter app once I am in the bush
YouTube for educational/diy info, facebook used as Kijiji under a randomly generated email address

Never really had it

I kinda predicted all these revelations that are coming out now about privacy breaches back in early 2000s so avoided it at all costs type thing.

Was always an early adaptor of encryption and privacy oriented search engines though (IE signal, telegram, duck duck go etc)

This and saddleHunter forums is as close to social media as I get lol [emoji846][emoji846]

I haven't been on facebook for a few years, I think it takes a lot of time ... but also very invasive.

I definitely use messaging platforms like messenger and whatsapp to keep in comms with my friends.
With work and everything going on, sometimes not possible to start talking on the phone, but can send a message,
like "Hey, I'm running 1 hour late." or "Are we still getting together tomorrow" ...

I do like Instagram ... but yes, it can consume a lot of time ... and it's a matter of knowing that, and disciplining yourself.
If you find yourself on Instagram for more than 60 minutes a day (cumulative) ... it's way too much in my opinion ... even
that ... 1h each day of your life ... what an investment ... I don't even exercise that often.

I enjoy the hunting videos on instagram.
I work in Telecom so all these msging apps are my competitors. over 50% drop if phone calls with these apps lol makes life easier though. I personally dont answer when ppl call.

just like everything else, these tools can help us, and can ruin us ... just like a knife ... gotta use it correctly.

they want to shape your perception of the world. they want u to get ure news, and everything else there ... so just gotta know that, and keep using it as a tool correctly IMHO ...

recently started using facebook again too, alot of good hunting and fishing groups there.

I am an old GenX born 1966. Have accounts on 4 hunting and fishing forums and an image hosting site to facilitate posting forum pictures.

No other media, no satellite, no tv, no cable, no landline.

Got a smart phone 3 years ago and stripped every app out I could. Than I rooted the phone and stripped out apps that the maker typically won't let you remove.

Only use the phone for calling, occasionally texting, taking pictures and checking emails. Stripped right down and 3 years old the phone battery still lasts 2 or 3 days on a charge.

This is the only social media that I participate in; I have a Facebook account that I only created to use Messenger with our kids but admittedly I do watch our local village FB group to see the bickering.

One young couple on our street has agreed that neither of them have social media accounts. Good for them I say.

I think social media has accelerated the polarization of society (especially in the US) and ruined many kids, especially online bullying.

I'm 65 so I don't fit your specs. I don't even own a cell phone, if I'm on line it's on my pc. If I'm on the phone it's from home, same as always. On a few outdoor forums, the only social media is FB, that's family, local buy and sell groups, some outdoor and even gardening groups and sites I follow. On a bit of a side note we always use a vpn, for less than $10/mo I can use it on up to 6 devices. The do not log any data ever. All our data is encrypted and encapsulated, and my ip addy can be from anywhere in the world they have a server. Even my AV doesn't recognize it and offers a vpn lol.

I have Instagram and Facebook. Mostly for buying and selling stuff within my hobbies...

Have Twitter, snapchat, Tik Tok but havnt used them in long time.

Been using Bumble and Tinder a bit more this summer than I usually do LOL

I am Generation X, 1969. Don't use Facebook or Instagram or any of the other things the only forum I belong to is this one and LinkedIn. LinkedIn is used for finding work.

I'm almost 68. Have a pc and myself and my wife have cell phones. I use the pc for this forum, a couple of woodworking forums, you tube for instructional videos, music, and history videos. I recently opened a FB account. I'll see how it goes. I had one years ago and couldn't handle being bombarded with soooo many friend requests from people I have never known. So far it's good. I can stay in touch with family and true friends.

For some reason It didn't show any new replies on this thread for me until I opened it again. (Weird)

Totally agree with the social media ruining kids now adays. I was born in 95, grew up when computers were just becoming a home thing, had 1 in the house I used to play games on and stuff like that.

Videogames were just becoming big as well. My dad was into them so we had the super Nintendo and Playstation 1 at home as well.

On the other side of that also grew up going camping and the cottage all the time and tagging along with my dad going hunting and hiking as well.

Along with street hockey in the winter and not going home until my hands turned purple. And soccer in the summer.

Feel like we had a nice mix of things growing up. The outdoor activities and the screen time. Understanding both has been good to me so far lol.

These were kinda my predictions for a while and that's what actually happening now
Where antifa / socialist sympathetic folks will be involved in government sponsored programs to enforce the vision.
The problem with social networks is that everything posted stays there forever and you never know when it going to come back to bite you in your backside. Just like recent events of people's lives ruined over something they said/done many years ago.

Bill c36 is in second reading at the moment. If passed, it can and pretty sure it will be used as vehicle to silence all the opposing voices legally.

Something to think about before elections

No cell APPS,no FB,no internet-cell connection,this forum,GOC and YouTube are the only social media I use. Important private conversations are by land line,only. I have a lot more days behind me than I have in front of me. I can't be bothered with the rest of the inane juvenile foolishness.

Late to the thread but this is a good one.

I do not use any social media. Don't have cable either, and have never had it since I moved out of the family home. I think most people only have it for the sports, but even sports has gone 'woke' these days and to be honest since Cherry got canned I don't even watch hockey anymore.

I am an 'old soul' as they say and prefer real things like books, the ODD magazine, cleaning my guns, sharpening my knives, mowing the lawn, etc. I remember growing up without the internet and not using it until high school.

I enjoy podcasts and youtube because they can be educational and entertaining. So I will stream videos to the tv while relaxing or podcasts / music to the bluetooth speaker while doing things around the house. To me there is most always something to do...I couldn't just waste an entire afternoon editing a photo for instagram just to get a cheap dopamine hit from the 'likes'

I'd rather get that from a good workout, honest day's work or accomplishing something.

Good on you OP for deleting your accounts. Most of the anxiety among your generation is directly because of social media. I'd say it's even worse for young girls who are pressured into dressing immodestly and competing for attention with way more girls than they ever had to in human history. There's lots of vicious cyber-bullying that goes on. Also, social media is more of a feminine thing, because they tend to be more susceptible to peer pressure and social approval than men.

There was a great study done on the blue light emitted from our electronic devices. Basically the blue light is the same wavelength as the sun's rays, so it tricks our brains into thinking it's day time and ramps up our cortisol. In this study they took blood samples from people at different times of the day to measure their cortisol and stress levels after being exposed to this blue light. Same results with mice.

A goodnight's sleep is the best thing you can do for your health. And it's good to wind down before bed with low light (lamps) in the home and no more smartphone after say 9pm or so if possible. Choose warmer light bulbs on the kelvin scale (under 3000k) for your home.

Appears like most of the Old Guard drawing their CPP have done well to stay isolated from the nonsense the 'information age' has thrust upon society. I remember when the 'internet was new, I was an instructor responsible for introducing the concept to the technicians at the training facility. IBM 8080 PCs with floppy disks and you had to know DOS to use it. :)

I'm not a Luddite, I was immersed in the leading edge of technology for most of my life, thanks to my trade in the Military. Was one the first in the office to get a new Moderola 'Brick' cell phone. Used to build and upgrade PC's for staff and students.

Today in retirement I only use a PC, I have a 'flip' phone for emergency use in the truck that I rarely use. I still rely on people to leave a message on the home phone if they want to get a hold of me. Last year the lads at the hunt camp convinced me to join 'Group' texting /messaging so we knew what was going on during the week.

I do use FaceBook due to the persistence of a good Army buddy in WinPeg. He introduced me to the concept of FB to keep in touch with all our old Army Buddies across Canada and around the world. That WAS a great idea, I chat frequently to a friend that now lives in New Zealand.

As others have found it's useful for forums like this and local Hunt/Shooting groups. Nice to chat with guys in the 'hood' HaHa..

As for the rest of social media..I've never looked at it, don't really even know what's out there, but do know it seems to be screwing up the last two generations and causing a lot of damage to young people's psyche. Sad to see a bunch of kids sitting on park benches with their faces glued to their phones instead of engaging in oral conversation.

I was out with my Dad having breakfast once and the couple (mid 30s) in the both beside us never looked up from the phones the whole time they sat there. Sad.

You're doing well BowJob if at your age you've already realized what it was doing to you and corrected it. You will learn a lot more with a lot less of that kind of information.
