Where are you going and what are you using, rifle, crossbow, compound or recurve? Also what is your rifle, crossbow, bow set up?
I am going to Burks Falls Sept 10th to 16th
I am hunting with my 300 Win mag using Hornady 165 grain GMX. If I get lucky before the hunt is over and harvest a bear I am using my Excalibur Matrix G340 with 150 grain bolt cutters for my second bear.

If I get to go this year,it'll be a spot and stalk at the spur of the moment type deal. A few of us are heading to the camp for Upland,waterfowl,some are doing the Deer hunt and if Mr.Bruin shows up,it'll likely get whacked if it's a biggun.

Taken maybe a dozen deer and half a dozen bear with accubonds. Never had an issue - all dropped withing sight. That being said i am not pushing them with a 300 Win Mag. A 165 grain bullet is only 2700 fps out of the 308. Out of a 300 mag you'd be pushing 3300 fps. At 3300 fps i would not be surprised if there were fragmentation issues at close range.Quote:

Hi Firedeptit-i also do hunt a lot(not exclusively though)from Trophy Saddle.
I almost always have pre set trees,with Screw in steps waiting for me(bottom 5 removed for theft protection).
What do you use for steps?
I actually use the Tetrd One climbing stick with an aider. The sticks were SUPER pricey ( bought a 3 pack ). The weigh savings ( under 1 lbs per stick ) and ease of deployment were deciding factors for me.Quote:

I was also playing with the thought of buying climbing sticks,just somehow could not figure out ,how difficult and timely it would get ,to use them on daily bases(up and down the tree)

There is some strain on the arches after a while but the saddle offers solutions. I tend to use the tree hugging method when my feet need a break. You could also brace against the tree with your knees. A lot of American saddle hunters pack tactical knee pads for this method.Quote:

As for methods me and my old man bait our own bears which makes getting nice sized bears really improbable. Especially since we have to drive at least 6 hours to hunt bear. We use crossbows. We found the bears didn't go as far vs a lung shot w/1oz slugs. Less meat wasted too.
Heading up tomorrow morning. Going to check and refresh baits when we get there and start the hunt on Saturday:thumbup:

We ended up with 4 bears in our camp. 2 Saturday and 2 Sunday. I was lucky enough to harvest one with my crossbow.
Nothing huge, the biggest field dressed 150lbs. We stopped hunting Sunday night as a conservation plan and concentrated on cleaning trails the rest of the trip preparing for deer season.
One of our younger members, that had not yet harvested a bear, scored this trip so that was cool.
Just got home so I will post pictures tomorrow.
Nice work. Looking forward to the pics. My baits are stone cold dead. Were getting hit by 5 bears daily until Sept 04. Totally shut down since than. Just a waiting game at this point. They will be back at some time in the next few weeks - just have to stay on alert and as soon as they return get out and at it.Quote:

He came in like a ghost to my left of the trail I was set up on. Stopped about 20 yards to the left of me with his nose up and sniffing. Made a few steps toward the barrel and stopped behind a tree (of course). Took a few more but still not a good shot, finally exposed his vitals so I took the shot. He reared up, barked and bit at the spot the arrow entered. Ran back down the trail he came from when I heard him pile up and take his final gasp of air. My Rage 125 grain went thru him like butter leaving a great blood trail. He only went 40 yards
Being my first bear taken with my crossbow.....I'm hooked

I cook a bear roast and a beef roast for supper bear hunting and deer hunting and the bear roast is gone way before the beef roast. Prepared and cooked right, bear roast is as good as any meat...

Just a friendly reminder: mnr changed the tagging location again for bear if I am mistaken they require to attached the tag to the nostril instead of hind legs like last year.
However if the hunter is present with the carcass no need to attach the tag to the animal.
I really don't understanding why they keep changing.
