Corn is In

I live in the country all around me are fields that are planted in corn this year - when I drive around I see the same thing - corn - I'd say that 95 per cent of the farm land in planted in corn - usually it is a variety of plants, soy beans, hay, tomatoes, etc. - not this year - everything is planted corn - the farmers must have figured that a lot of corn will be needed to supply the ethanol being used and large shipments are planned for overseas - something is different - the deer and bear like it - they come out of the mountain and head right to the corn fields

A lot of corn around me also. But corn always did pay better than soybeans. Just more work in the fall

Corn everywhere this year. The price has jumped big time. In canada anyways this will be the second largest harvest ever is what I was reading.

Was also reading something about China and corn as well which had a part to play

Corn just starting to come off here mostly for silage and the rest will come off late Oct and Nov+.

Seems to be about the normal amount here of corn and soybean

If you like a good feed of real yellow corn, its getting harder and harder to find. Most stores and roads side vegetable stands sell peaches and cream which to me is nothing more than sugar-no corn taste whatsoever.

Lets just hope it's not a wet harvest this year. The amount of propane required to dry it properly jacks up the prices big time. The prices have already jumped up 10 cents a liter this summer due to high demand from the far east.

I pay the extra price and buy ethanol free gas. Probably as much a form of protest against the use of ethanol in gas.
Even the guy that came up with the idea of adding ethanol to gas is against it now because of all the pollution that processing it causes. Not just in the fuel cost to farmers but also the amount of spraying done to the crop.
My wife was diagnosed with non Hodgkins Lymphoma in 2012. She was exposed to a good dose of Round Up that year on Mother's Day which made her very ill that day. By Nov, of that year she is diagnosed. There are class action law suits here and in U.S. against the company for this exact reason.
Aside from that if you see what it does to small engine fuel systems in a short time you can imagine what it does to your vehicle over time. I get better mileage using ethanol free. I don't know if it is enough difference to save the extra cost of the fuel or not.
As I said, more a form of protest than anything else. This coming from a cheapskate.

I still grow 2 varieties of yellow sweet corn. 1 that came out in the 80's, a sugar enhanced called Bodacious and a synergistic called Honey Select. Neither are GMO.

Yes - when the government steps in everything gets screwed up - they started using ethanol to cut back on the use of gasoline and resulting pollution but then when you figure the gas used by the farmers and other uses to haul, to dry the stuff and the spraying all results in more pollution - not to mention the problems it causes when used in engines - now when I buy gas for my equipment I need to put a gas stabilizer in it - then another thing is the stupid gas cans which are suppose to reduce the vapor from escaping end up with more vapor escaping because you end up spilling more gas with the stupid things - then there was the water used in toilets - the government mandated that only a certain amount of water was suppose to be used when flushing the toilet - the result was that people had to flush the toilet twice to get rid of the waste - it's plain stupid - then it was the windmills for power - even though you build them you still need other sources of power when the wind doesn't blow so you end up with twice the generating capacity - then it was ......

A few gas stations have premium is ethanol free, but that will change shortly as the Government is mandating all gas must have ethanol

Ethanol is why all my vehicles are diesel diesel truck diesel jeep backhoe skid steer have a rat rod with cumins diesel in it
only need for gas is zero turn lawn mower. A diesel one is $8,000 more

On that Mother's Day she was over on the west side of our property doing some gardening along the fence row. It was a beautiful day but very windy coming from the west. I couldn't believe he was even spraying that day. The wind was blowing the spray so much I can't imagine there was much landing on the field. After he went by where she was working just once or twice she went in the house. I was on the east side of the property in a protected area so I didn't notice anything until I saw her go in the house. When I followed her in I saw how the wind was blowing the spray so I covered my face to go in.
She was sick for the rest of that day and part of the next. When she came out the next day she checked on her rabbit that she bought on the Saturday before MD and it was almost like it was paralyzed. It couldn't move it's back end and had the runs and was puking. We took it to the vet but it died before we got there.
She was diagnosed in Nov. of the same year.

There are a lot of stations now selling it. All CTC gas bars apparently have it. Shell have it and I have been told that Esso has it. Bad thing is it's about .20 cents more.

Are you sure it was round up.
I have never heard of any physical damage to humans from roundup..

I can remember when they first came out with roundup. It was $80.00 a litre. Was originally a heavy duty cleaner for trucks and trains. Then They seen that ever weed died in yards when used as cleaner. Than it became a herbicide expensive at first but you could spray and kill thistle spots. Then it came off patent and was selling for $4.00 a litre in bulk. I’ve sprayed 1000 of litres in my time. They use to claim so safe you could drink it
Take away roundup food prices would be 1000 times more expensive just saying

Sometimes a farmer will hire a helicopter to spray his fields - I've seen that - and often times when the wind blows the spray lands quite a distance from where it should - on the crops - people need to sue the farmer if his spray lands on your property and makes you sick - there are a lot of stupid people around -

Certainly smelled like Round Up. You can find "Roundup Class Suit - Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma" and "Roundup Cancer Risk - Monsanto Class Action Lawsuit"
I'm sure there are more if you look.

I heard about the claims a few years back but they were hung up due to the wording and claims not meeting the warnings of 'Significant exposure'.

Sorry to hear your wife may have been exposed and has gotten sick. Sounds like she had an allergic-type reaction to it.

These chemicals we use in Agriculture are never 100% safe. My wife is a Bee Keeper and she has stopped me from using it as it's linked to the killing of colonies.

You know that corn is worth a lot when farmers are converting huge chunks of overgrown (bush) lots back in growing corn.

My neighbour paid $1,200 an acre to clear 40 acres. With crop yields of about 175 bushels per acre and sale at $5.50 a bushel, farmers can pull in $1000 acre. So it will take a couple of yrs to pay that off.

In the mean time he's cleared 40 acres and will make a huge food plot for me to hunt on. :)

Roundup has next to zero Oder the adjuvants (sticker) could have smell or the mix of another herbicide or insecticide depends what’s being sprayed and crop stage of what was used

The Round Up I have here has a very light odour and that is what we were basing our experience on at the time it happened. It was floating in the air enough that you could detect the odour. I don't know of any other sprays that are similar. I know that we both remembered that it wasn't an obnoxious smell.
I might be wrong and I wouldn't like to think that I was falsely blaming it on Round Up.
The only reason we had some here was that we were trying to kill off some poison ivy in the fence row. My wife is dead set against using it but at the time we didn't have much choice. The fence row was full of it.

If what you have is fairly new and bought in Canada...it's not strong enough to kill a weed.. They watered it down so much I truly believe it would be safe to drink.

Now the Farmers stuff..that is a whole other ball game. I use it here and it kills full grown trees..make me nervous to get any on me :)

Roundup is original name of glyphosphate
There’s 12 plus generics now Chinese have a copy it’s cheap plus so many mixes can’t keep track of them all if you smelt it wasn’t roundup alone

glyphosphate has been taken out of the product you can buy.

I have had this stuff around since before the incident in 2012. Probably bought it around 2005. Annie moved in with me in fall of 2004 and we found out about the poison ivy in the spring of 2005 when she got covered with it. I didn't know any better because it doesn't seem to bother myself or my grandkids for that matter. There were wild grapes growing in the fence row so we would get a good feed of them when they came to visit in the fall. It was actually growing up the garage and I actually had it to where it was growing all the way around it. Never had an issue myself.
I took a slip to the MNR office to identify it and they told me it was a type that should only be found in the Niagara to Point Pelee area. They assumed that birds probably brought it here.

If you buy super, ultramar and esso don't have ethanol.

I know an 80+ year old farmer that told me on the weekend that he's been eating cattle corn the last month. LOL

I thought he was joking and he asked what was so funny....then says if it's good enough for the cows and coons then I'll eat it too. Hard to believe he can eat it on the cob because he's likely only got 6 teeth in his head.

Looks like the usual amounts of Soy bean to corn ratio here in Norfolk County.
I use farm grade Round Up around the property and always wear rubber gloves, boots and a respirator with the purple cartridges when spraying. Try to spray on calm days or at least stay upwind of it. I'm told that it decomposes within 48 hours after spraying ? Must be applied to the leaf of the plant so that it gets absorbed into it in order to kill it and that it is actually a growth stimulant but to the 10th power ? Basically the plant burns itself out or so I am told. I've had Poison Ivy before but until retiring to the farm never encountered Poison Oak. That stuff is nasty ! Painful blisters that takes weeks to heal.
