Opening Day 2021
Well, opener has come and gone as we dive right into the season. After scouting leading up to the 25th, nothing extravagant was in the books for opening day. The original plan was a wood duck creek shoot, followed by a local public spot we frequent in the afternoon (pending how the morning went). Friday night rolls in with a phone call from a friend, "Hey my beans are flooded and there is a couple hundred ducks in it" - see you in the morning. After brushing up the A-frame, the anticipation set in for the sleepless night ahead.
The next morning we had a combination of driving and walking into the field. Once we arrived, the water level had significantly dropped from the night before. this had us a bit worried. None the less, we set up and 15 mins before legal the birds were dropping in. Once legal rolled around we had 30-40 ducks in the spread. By 7:45 we had our 5 limits of mallards (including one black duck) and hung around to watch the show of mallards working. Sometimes the last minute hunts are the best ones. couldn't have asked for a better opening day with friends.
Good luck and stay safe this season.

Nice pic and congrats on a great hunt

Nothing like a flooded field (soybean or corn ) to attract birds ! You should get a couple of more shoots out of it ?

Longpointer - We got lucky with the field drain being overwhelmed and taking a lot longer to drain than normal (+70mm of rain in 2 days). If we get another storm like that in the near future it will flood again. We may also get birds once the crop comes off.

right on that's awesome. Mother nature gave you a bit of a hand on that one! Congrats
