What an eye opener eh BM !!! Who knew ?? HaHa.
All those trinkets you bought off Amazon with a mouse click are sitting in a container ship bobbing out in the Pacific.
And some say we're not a consumer society...:)
One thing not mentioned was the trade imbalance...too much stuff being made off shore...
TOTAL 2021
Us export; 94 Billion
US import; 313 Billion
difference....-219 Billion
That's a lot of jobs losses in North America...
coincidentally, I was recently talking to a general manager of a huge tractor supply business, who basically said his access to foreign made parts has been greatly affected due to the shortage of containers world wide. One of his suppliers in Great Britain told him the inventory is sitting in the warehouse, but there's no containers available to load them into and a huge backlog of ships available to transport them, when one does become available.
In heavy industry I can see this problem benefiting machine shop/ job shops locally that haven't been able to compete manufacturing parts that have been flooding in from overseas.
Even million dollar rigs have "throw away" parts worth thousands of dollars that could be easily repaired or remade here rather than ordering a container from China.
Well they have no gasoline to do anything, they cant even get gas for their cars. More great Conservative Government politics, lets get out of the EU mess for years on end, now they are out nobody left to drive the fuel delivery trucks, EU drivers went back home. Unable to qualify new drivers as their testing centers are closed because of Corvid. Boris Johnston over in Washington begging America for a free trade deal, sorry Boris you cut your ties to America when you went with the EU.
Seriously. One can fire up the blamethrower all they like but it's a problem we're all going to face soon enough, if we aren't already.
I've said in another thread, I work in food production. Food needs certain materials to be processed, some of the materials we get that go into our processes aren't available. Some of the stuff we usually make isn't being made at all. They are constantly having issues getting drivers to move the stuff we do make. Top that off with staff shortages hampering our ability to produce at all.
Have a look at the number of container ships anchored off ports worldwide. Going to get interesting.

Remember China was paying a premium to have the empty containers sent back empty.
This I believe was happening last year .

It sounds like as long as Coscoe has their own supply chain...we will be able to get out bulk food from them. Prepping ahead...better buy a couple of chest freezers :)
Multiple complaints about this thread from multiple members, so we're shutting it down. This is why we can't have nice things.
