CERB Killed the Labour Force

Most of us knew the Village Idiots 'free' money to stay at home was going to cost the Taxpayers a whack of money...but these numbers are staggering. $102 Billion !!!

Help wanted signs are everywhere yet no one is applying for jobs. I suspect that will stop Oct 23 when the CRB benefits stop. Can't blame the Pandemic on being unemployed anymore.

In the words of one frustrated employer currently offering employees 65 per cent more than the minimum wage, “People don’t want to work, especially in agriculture or physical labour-based jobs.” He added, “If UBI (universal basic income) comes into effect, agriculture will be a dead business.”

I always said the CERB was a test for the guaranteed basic income.

Nothing good happens when you pay someone more to stay at home than to go to work. When the dust clears what is the incentive for people to go back to work and make less than they did sitting home playing video games? CERB should have at least been taxed - at least that way the gov't would have had their money up front until waiting for the end of the fiscal year when people realize they have a $4,000 - $6,000 tax bill they have no way of paying......or no intention of paying.

When a family of four get eight thousand a month to do nothing, why the hell would they want to work?
One things for sure freeloaders vote for the political party giving them free money for doing nothing.

Government hounding me right now for a union dues receipt for $800 or I will have to pay it on next year bill.

I told the lady on the phone just pretend it's a CERB payment, She didn't find it funny and told me I have 30 days to show proof or pay up.

I Guess the working class will foot the bill. Rape the middle a bit more what could go wrong. The way the gas prices are jumping 30 is the new 20 everything is costing more now wait for the interest rate to go up. It's costing everyone more than what it needs to.

Another record number of people quit their job in the USA last month 4.3 million.
Even Mc Donald's is offering a 500 dollar sign up bonus down there .

Yep.....been on some pretty nasty CRA calls. All for what - working hard and getting a bonus?? They squeeze us because they know they can. How can they get $5k off someone that is on CERB......not going to happen.

The new business model is clear - cut out the middle man (gov't). Pay me cash because cash is KING

I can’t believe it only took 2k a month to dissuade so many from working. Think about that for a minute.

A lot were youngsters living in the basement with no costs. $2K to buy toys that sparked your interest, games, drugs whatever you want..why go out and flip burgers ??

I was just at the Mc Donald's in Beaverton I think the dinning in area is closed because they can't find the staff to work.

Ok but seriously if all we’re losing is some fast food chains because of the labour shortage, is that a bad thing? Firstly that crap isn’t good for you, secondly aren’t you all tired of seeing a timmies on every corner and sometimes having roads blocked by their overflowing drive through lines. This is a good wake up call for better health.

I think that is more the case than people eating at Tim's , which really has quite a nutritional menu by the way :)

Mom and Dad leaving a $20 on the counter in the morning so Junior can buy his lunch has spoiled a whole generation. They don't see the need anymore to work after school for pocket money, just tap into the Bank of Mom and Dad.

I don’t think it’s that simple of a generation of lazy kids. Like I mentioned in another thread, I think the cost of products has risen at a higher pace than wages have. It’s tough to motivate a generation that is always playing catch up but never able to get ahead. This doesn’t just mean kids working minimum wage jobs, this could also include young adults looking to get into their first home. Real estate has gone crazy. Pricing in general for materials is getting to be nuts. It’s definitely putting the squeeze on some households and widening class divisions.

Maybe technology, innovation and automation is hurting the labour force too.

Not 'lazy' per see; ...but definitely, they have a greater sense of entitlement.

If young people were really 'hungry (financially) like most of us were (60-70s) , taking ANY job was a right of passage. Few stayed in their parent's home after 20. A lot were married by the time they were 25 and living on their own. I read something like 45% of 28 yr olds still live at home now.

Using the excuse that it's too expensive is a bit of a cop-out. Minimum wage in 1970 was $1.25, and we managed to buy an old beater and share a flat with a buddy. ....Yes everything is more expensive but the minimum wage is also $15.

I agree the kids today basically give up hope of catching up on what we could afford when we were younger and our money seemed to go further.

My generation has done well and if you worked hard, were thrifty most all of us should be able to help our kids out and help then get into their own homes and so forth. There are a lot of baby boomers who did well, inherited well, but because of their own life styles, maybe a divorce or two, have nothing to pass down to their kids. Schools were a major fail with regard to teaching kids financial literacy and are only now catching up.

Your last sentence sums it up rather nicely gilly. I agree wholeheartedly one has to look no further than our current baboon of a PM. He believes that budgets balance themselves as we all have heard him say that on record. If that's not a failure on financial literacy I don't know what is! Cheers.

Well no one helped us buy our first home.
Me and the wife both worked and bought a mobile home with a small down payment. We fixed it up and paid it off in 3 years then used that money for a down for our home.
Many years later, our daughter had moved out and was complaining she would never be able to afford a home. I made a deal with her and told her to move back home and pay us the same rent and utilities she was paying. We would take care of the rest. I opened a saving account in her name and deposited every single rent money she gave me. Within three years she had enough for a nice down payment to buy herself a home that she still lives in. She buys her own vehicles and just bought herself a nice camper she parks on our property.
There’s helping then there’s teaching them how to make things happen.

Communism takes time to implement.
They can't do it overnight or people might wake up and see what's happening.

I think we don't give our kids enough credit.
I think they are smart, and hard working ... the ones that are brought up right.
They'll get through almost anything ... just like we did.

BUT, that's if they are given a chance too.
Socialism is not what our parents or we grew up on ... it was our hard work that got us here.

I think the way the "kids" can make money now is different. I can't wrap my head around it, but apparently there is a way to make money by doing stupid stuff and making a video of it. Some of them are making more money off of that then us working middle class can make by going to work and producing a physical product. I too notice the help wanted signs and cant understand why CERB is still a thing.

Cerb is still a thing as it buys liberal votes and brings more into the liberal flock to follow the preaching of the liberal messiah justlied Trudeau. Sad thing nowadays as so many like to live off the government teat. Poor Canada.

It's also what's pushing up inflation. All that new printed money and everyone spending the same the economy must be booming lol.

It's only going to get worse it will continue to rise into next year. Costing everyone more costing many to spend all they have.

Well, if we classify professional you-tuber as a service ... that's all well and good, but in the end, someone has to pay for those services. You can pay with money made from selling other services ... but those services also need to be paid from someone, and if you keep going down the line ... you need resources and products to generate income. Without those, the food chain's money taps will run empty ... and then no one has money for services ... plus, I think we hear of the top 0.1% of you-tubers that make the money, the rest aren't making anything.

I wouldn't really call that model anything I'd teach my kids to rely on ... and I know that's not what you suggest ...

I did hear from someone in the restaurant industry ... they said the lack of applicants for jobs isn't to be blamed on CERB.
Apparently the main culprit is that after the restaurants were forced to close their doors for over 1 year ... many bar tenders, waiters and waitresses
just went and found new jobs to earn a steady income .... and they're gone ... not coming back. So there is a general lack of people
that have any sort of experience doing that job.

I am in Laval this week and today we hit 3 restaurants before we found one that was actually open for lunch. The closed restaurants has signs on the doors stating they have limited hours of operation due to the labour shortage.

On the up side a couple of young inspiring entrepreneur hit an armoured truck in Montreal today.

Whoa, I didn't realize it was that bad. I know of restaurants here looking to add some staff, but not such shortages that they need to close. That is crazy!

I know a young guy here southern Ontario that drives food delivery truck. His company flips the bill flies him to Montreal Friday night so he can drive delivering food truck there Saturday Sunday then flies him back where he drives here for the week
