Once ,way back in time during the addition deer tag availably galore,i have asked MNR(no F at the time) about extending some hunting opportunities/or discussing lost opportunities.
I was told-they seriously consider extending the season til Jan 15-th.
That was 15 years ago-never to hear about it ,or else.
Kind of sad-not saying that everywhere and every deer should/could be hunted, but kind of makes me wonder, what we would gain or lose with ANTLERED deer tag extended til jan 15-th(archery only)
Double thread?
I'm not a biologist but would extending the Deer season in the winter be a stressor on the population.
They need to conserve energy, not be pushed all over the place IMO?
Also I cant see them extending the season where Deer yard up?
During a hard cold winter how many "ANTLERED" deer would still be carrying a rack?
Personally I'm ok with status quo and if/when I buy anther Deer property, I would be more interested in helping them by opening up trails and feeding them if needed during that critical time.
Not disagreeing with You guys, said the same thing above :

There are areas,i believe ,this could be done.
The disturbance would be likely minimal in January-only the few die hard bowhunters would be out anyway.
The idea originally came from MNR...........
No ,not going to do a difference Werner.
But,there are areas, the season goes beyond Dec 31-st without badly effecting the herd.
While i have no problem with hunters hunting over baits piles,i also share Your view of the lack of "fair chase" sitting over a bait pile in the winter.Starting in December,if one would ask me.
ps:
Never baited in my 24 years of deer hunting.
Ive always thought opening a bucks only with a certain point limit September 1st would be neat to be able to get mature bucks in velvet, thunder bay area I believe opens earlier for bow then southern wmu
I do bait, and keep a camera at the bait piles.
Bait with cold weather and snow brings them out in broad daylight.
As far as the effect of this hunting on deer population - I agree - it would be very small.
Most guys have their tags filled by then and not many would be out in the cold.
Hi guys
From what I see every year “up north” - north of the Severn river is at least 80 % of all bigger bucks are shot after dec 1, in ground blinds, over bait. Our herd here has been decimated by extra tag era, harsh couple winters and the take over of coyotes. Predator to prey ratio has tipped. I think a few years of dec 1 shut down and not over bait would help the herd, rebound quicker and grow some antlers again. My opinion on what I’ve seen in last 25 years hunting.
Thank You for input and Welcome to the Forum choclab.
I tent to belive-these kind of hunter inputs are missed out greatly by our own MNRF -to make decisions which would : suit the game-suit hunters-and suit their OWN agenda.
Alas(at least the way i see it,)public consultation from them is more of a publicity action ,then a truly utilized great tool to maintain our hunting heritage to its best abilities.
But-i can be wrong.
Couple of bucks sparring.
