Messing around with the 35 Whelen and pistol bullets

After building this gun last year it is becoming one of my favourites!

I’m starting to look at using 158 grain and 180 grain pistol bullets in the whelen for plinking at the range and possibly some varmint if suitable.

The cost of projectiles these days is through the roof so this is a good paper puncher tactic. Recoil should be very light.

I can find load data for 180 grain so no problem there but the 158xtp is a different story. I can use trail boss for certain but I’d be interested in hearing if others have had success with this venture.

My twist rate is 1/12 so I doubt I’ll be able to push the thin jacket bullets too fast but maybe 24-2600 FPS…

Has anyone else gone down this road?

I'm not sure what you trying to achieve. Possibly this will be a place to start.

I knew I saw them in my old zipped reloading manuals, you beat me to it.

This was always my plan, a 7600 pump with sights in 35 Whelen. 1 scope for 250gr big animal bullets, 1 scope for 35 remington velocity 200gr bullets and the sights for pistol bullets, 158gr lead for small game/plinking.

Old reloading manuals - I must find them!

Wonder how a hard cast powder coated would work on a coyote. It certainly would not expand!

I would enjoy a 7600 in whelen. A few years of searching with no luck.

I would not use hard cast, I would use a 158gr soft lead cowboy action lead bullet, run the velocity around that of a 38 special, wad cutter or semi-wad cutter.

I don't think you are likely to have any problem with hard cast bullets of that caliber on coyotes., Although I have my reservations of using my .243 with case bullets on deer because of the velocity limits not allowing it, to build what I see as sufficient kill energy. I've sighted in my .243 with a 83 gr. Loverin hard cast bullets which develops something in the neighbourhood of 600 ft-lbs when pushed to 1800 fps, for use on coyotes. I've used the same bullet on groundhogs, it seem to kill them as effective as a 75 grain jacketed bullet running over 3,000 fps. With regard to loading manuals I look for them at Gun Shows , which hopefully will again start up some day. The more recent manuals will have the newer powder receipts, the older ones may not, you can always flip through them to check to see what powders receipts are listed.

Have you ever tried the gas checked RCBS 90 grain bullet?

That mold drops some beautiful pills.

Can't say that I've worked with RCBS molds, I used cast in my firearms, those bullets I push towards 2000 fps I use gas checks with. otherwise I work with plain base. I use pretty well LEE and LYMAN moulds with LEE lube/sizing dies to install the gas checks
