Quiet morning for me. Saw 4 hens on the ground, and another still roosted at 8:45am! Never heard a gobble, and the rain held off, packed it in at 9am.
My first entry of 2022. In the blind at 5:15am, heard the first gobble at 5:45am. Soft calls were responded to immediately by a Tom and 2 Jakes. They popped out of the opposite corner of the field and started heading towards my decoy setup (1 Tom and 2 hens) They hung up half way across the field but a hen b-lined it towards my decoys and the boys all followed her into 15 yards away from my pop up blind. As soon as she cleared, I took aim and let the Tom have it. I love when a plan comes together. I think I am going to bring the crossbow out next time.
Scoring-
Spur- 1 1/4" (1.25 x 20= 25 points)
Beard- 8 1/2" (8.5 x 2= 17 points)
Shotgun- (0 points)
Total points= 42
I hope I did that right. Just as a side note it weighed 21 lbs (Measured with my fish scale)
Good luck to everyone.

Well, call it beginners’ luck but I had an exciting hunt and managed to pull off a major fail followed by a major win today.
I got into my blind by 5:10am this morning. Nice and early I thought. There was no wind, no rain but it was slightly overcast.
After opening the blind, I had time for a coffee and watched a large mink run past the front.
I called a little on my box call, very faint, not knowing how much I should be calling. At just before 7am I could hear a hen calling to my decoys from my left about 100 yards away. I answered back a few times really softly, not wanting to overdo it.
After about 10 minutes of calling back and forth she walked by the front of blind at about 10 yards. She took a good look at the decoys and stuck around for about 5 minutes before slowly moving along. I thought that was kind of cool. If nothing else, I had an experience. Not what I was looking for but cool, nonetheless.
Things got quiet again and I looked at the solunar tables on the ood website to see what the major period was – said about 8:10am – so I waited.
It was pretty quiet until about 9:00 when all of a sudden to my left, I see a gobbler in full strut approaching my decoys. I had limited visability there and He didn’t make a sound. I remember thinking the thing is HUGE!
I managed to pull the shotgun up as it approached the decoys at slightly over 20 yards away. Clear shot, open field, all looked good. I lined up the shot, pulled the trigger and….missed!
The thing went airborne and flew away totally unscathed. I couldn’t believe it! I’m thinking to myself “how could I miss a chip shot like that!”. I was kicking myself!
I got out of the blind and went to see if I could find any trace of a hit. No feathers at all. I found the shot cup and went to look where the turkey flew to just in case. No sign whatsoever. I must have shot over him.
At this point I’m thinking I just blew my chance. Should I pack up and go home?
Nothing to do at home but work, so I thought, nah, stick it out a little longer.
I got back into the blind, poured myself a coffee and started to make some more turkey sounds on the call. What the heck, might as well try I thought.
At about 10:30am I hear a Very distant gobble - like 400 yards distant. What the heck, I hammered the call with a bunch of very loud clucks, trying to project the sound as loud as possible. About 15 seconds later the thing answered my call with another gobble that seemed to be closer!
This went on for about 30 minutes, back and forth, closer and closer. At about 200 yards I stopped answering his calls. I’ve never called turkeys before, so I didn’t want my sucky calling to scare him off. He made a few more gobbles, seemingly coming closer and closer.
Suddenly, he’s right in front of the blind, to my left at about 10 feet, and his head is all red and blue and in full strut!
He took a step into the open and I let him have it. I didn’t miss that shot!
If I’m measuring right, he has a beard with the longest hair at 10 3/4 inches and the biggest spur slightly over 1 ¼ inches.
That’s it. That’s my hunt for today. I hope you enjoyed the hunt as much as I did.

Both really great stories. Jerry, those are great pictures, especially the feather spray behind you in the last pic. And those hooks! Markster, there are two types of turkey hunters: those who have shot and missed a close bird, and those who haven’t, yet. It’s so easy to do when they are close, nice job turning it around.
Couple of cool stories there Guys, Congrats on the birds and Markster, we've all been there and done it, none likely ever got so quick a chance at redemption....Awesome recovery!!

Sorry for the mess up. Likely something i did wrong.
You too Jerry !.
How old do you figure your bird was?
P.S. I think we need a "like" function on this website so you can easily cheer others on.
Honestly, I have no idea how to age a bird. I have always figured that the brighter red their head the younger they were. The older ones had more white and blue in thier head colours. That being said, I am no turkey expert just my observations from the field. I agree with you, there are plenty of upgrades this app needs to run smoother.

So the boy and I head to the woods to try to put a smack on a couple of Toms we've been watching for a couple of months.....
We're there well before dawn, we get our blind brushed in and wait....Just before dawn a deer wanders by and carries on, didn't wind us or anything so that went well...She had not been gone long and the first gobbles started. Now we knew there were Jakes in there too with the two Toms and a bunch of hens, so we weren't celebrating yet...As dawn broke though, a couple of hens flew down and went into the field edge beside us, no more than 20 feet away, they slowly worked the fields edge up and over the hill behind us....Shortly after they left more hens flew down into the woods and started their days clucking and yelping away, the gobbles continued and we still waited....Eventually we watched all the birds fly down into the woods behind some brush where we couldn't see them, but we could still hear them....This went on for a bit, but eventually settled down, finally the hens started popping out of the woods edge, coming out of some thick stuff where I didn't think they would, but they did anyway.....a bunch of Jakes popped out a little further up the edge and sprinted 20 feet in front and past us to follow where the earlier hens had gone....Finally behind the hens popped the 2 target Toms....puffed up and strutting to beat the band.
We watched them as they moved ever closer, we whispered back and forth our plans to shoot and hopefully bring them both home....
They finally did get into range and the hens went into alert mode and started putting....The jig was soon up.....
We counted down and boom.....We watched one Tom fly away completely unhurt, and the other lay in a heap....The best we can figure, they were coming in side by side and we think last minute the one guy moved in front of the other and we ended up shooting the one bird, both of us.... Not exactly as planned, but sharing a bird with the TurkeyWes is still so awesome.... He claimed it was the bird I was assigned so we are claiming it as TurkeyJohn's and he can use his tag on the next one.....The kid is a gentleman, looking after his dear, old Dad, Love that guy to pieces....
Not the biggest we've ever taken but grateful for another spring to chase these incredible birds, those first gobbles get me every time and if your heart isn't racing when one comes into range, you should hang up the gun.....
Thanks again all, and good luck out there, the first of 4 reports I hope,
Beard had one hair around 10 inches, most of it closer to 9 1/2 inch mark, longest spur was an inch, weighed in at 19.19 lbs....
Looks likem I need to add my tag in, I'll have to get a pic of it, it's still on the leg of the bird that I had cut off....

Third times the charm - took out my son and a buddy this morning. Hunted the roost at my place, only 1 hen and a distant rooste Tom, who gobbled once. Otherwise was a gorgeous, but silent morning. Switched to another property, had a hen respond, nothing else. Back for a refill of coffee and a couple pancakes, and out to another spot late morning. At first it seemed like another bust, but some persistent calling eventually got some hens to respond, which got 2 different toms to sound off. I cut off the hens, cut off the toms, worked my mouth call and slate, sometimes at the same time, and over half and hour managed to pull those toms over where my buddy got a shot. As the caller I got to sit behind him and watch it all unfold over his shoulder, like my own live hunting show! Super day, and hopefully the last of the frosty mornings.
Way to go Lenny, did you get any pics.
Pics Lenny!!!!
Added a pic to my original post - my buddy's not in the contest so I wasn't going to post it here, but why not, nice day and a nice bird. And his first in over 10 years.
I love the early season - no leaves, no bugs and not too hot
Nice looking bird Lenny. That stump looks like it was made for bird pictures! Love the fan.
Had a good morning on Saturday after a lousy day on Tuesday as I couldn't make out for the opener.
On Tuesday all we saw was lone hens all morning which was odd as there were no jakes or toms with them.
Saturday morning the 2 of us get to the farm around 5:00AM and proceeded to our spots one at both ends of this field we hunt.
I started setting up my jake and hen decoy and thought I heard a distant gobble and said can't be too early still then I heard another which was closer so I went and sat down and waited till it was legal shooting time and took out my shotgun from it's case and loaded it. Started with a couple of soft clucks and immediately got 2 gobbles then 2 more, waited a couple minutes and repeated the soft cluck and heard 4 different toms gobbling back and they were about 30 yards behind me. then one after the other I heard them fly down and at that point started hen clucks with my box call and they gobbled back it took only about 10 minutes when they entered the field to my left and started strutting towards my decoys silently. I wish I would have filmed it as all 4 toms were in full strut all the way to my decoys which were out 25 yards and I picked out the one with the longest beard and boom game over looked at my phone and it was only 6:00AM. the other 3 birds stood there for a bit and head straight for my buddy and 2 minutes later another boom and it we were done.
My bird had a 10-1/4" Bird, 13/8" Spurs and weighed 24.2LbsAttachment 43536[Attachment 43537Attachment 43538Attachment 43539Attachment 43540

Thanks Lenny, It was an amazing site wish I had filmed it on my phone.
Sometimes you get lucky! I came home last night to a dark bird walking through the back field about 300 yards away. Before I could get some glass on it to confirm it was a Tom, he was gone. Checked the time, and it was just after six. I’ve never really had much luck late in the day, or heard much gobbling in late afternoon, but decided to give it a shot. Quick change, and a sneak around to the back, called, nothing. Repositioned, called again, nothing. Worked closer to the direction the bird had gone, another call, more silence. Hmmm, maybe it was a hen after all, and I was running out of time, so decided to head back. Threw out one more call, and had an immediate gobble, and he wasn’t that far. Set up by the nearest tree, and started calling, cutting him off each time he gobbled. He came in on a string, full strut, dragging his wings, gobbling his butt off. Got the gun up as he passed behind a tree, and as he came out the other side I took the shot. In and out in less than 45 minutes, and my first evening bird. Happened so fast it didn’t even seem real. Definitely the smallest Tom in the contest so far this year!
8" beard and 1/4" spurs - bumps really! Im in the contest with a score of 21!!!

Took a buddy out yesterday for his first hunt of the year. We started mid-morning, and had an immediate gobble after walking in to one of my favorite spots. I look at him and ask - can it be this easy? We snuck around and set-up, with me about 4 yards behind him in the brush calling. The gobbler started working towards us, and then out of nowhere a hen materializes, doesn't want to challenge my hen calls, just alarm puts, and walks over to the tom that we still hadn't seen. He immediately shuts up, and stops responding to my calls, but still gobbles occassionally at crows calling as they fly over. All goes quiet, and all of a sudden I hear a bird take off from under the cedars at the edge of the marsh we are on - and I see the hen gaining altitude and getting out of there in a hurry. What the heck? 30 seconds later, in an explosion of flapping and thrashing, the tom takes to the air, barely. He was really working to get up and stay up, big beard hanging down, barely clearing the tops of the cattails the whole way across the swamp. He was so fat he could barely fly. He crashes into the pines on the other side, starts gobbling, she responds, they go back and forth for a while, celebrating their close call and escape perhaps. I've never seen a hen rescue a tom like that before! We circled around the swamp and tried to get on them again, but the wind really came up, and we couldn't hear them if they did respond, so we called it quits. Playing it over, we must have spooked the hen on our way in, and she got her boyfriend out of there!
may not be a real big bird but nice looking. good for you on evening shoot, I have tried a few times with no luck,
Here's my story for Saturday morning, was at the farm at 5:00 walked in and set up the decoys and waited to hear any gobbling.
It was not until 6:30 that a couple of gobbles went off in the distance to the west of me which i thought might be across the road but were actually on the same property but not where i expected them. They continued to gobble as I called softly when i heard a hen to the south of me. She finally appeared over the rise and was coming in to the dekes putting and purring all the way in and stayed for a while so I left her alone to cluck and purr which I thought would add to my dekes which it did as the toms gobbled and appeared about 150 yards away with 4 more hens and looked like 2 jakes with them so started called andAttachment 43549Attachment 43549 only the jakes responded and came running in like a train strutting and running all the way in. One jake had no beard and the other jake one had what looked like a 5" to 6 " beard so I took him and now I'm tagged out for the season.
the jake had a 4-3/8" beard and 1/8" spurs and weighed 18.3Lbs.

So, solo hunt this morning, TurkeyWes was sleeping in.. new farm we just got permission to turkey hunt this year, only 4 years of nicely asking, they let me goose hunt all we want.
Had hunted this guy a few days already and kept going to hens and not to me though he did like my calling..
Sat up on his roost this morning, extra early only one hen decoy and waited… dawn starts breaking, and gobbling, but from the opposite end of the field from the normal roost… Quick move time, pull up stakes and follow a tree line as close as I dare, set back up, and start some soft hen talked, he was still roosted a couple hundred yards away anyway, wasn’t sure the slate call was working so went to the box call and here he comes in behind me…
Set the calls down because he’s moving in and get turned in my seat ready to shoot through the brush…
Let him come to 15 yards and the old 870 barks, bird down, bit of a flop but he’s done…
Nice limb hanger for sure, I think my biggest yet at 22.33 lbs, 10 inch beard and 1 3/8 inch spurs…
Called him Jason since it’s Friday the 13th…
Now to get TurkeyWes on them…
Good luck to everyone still chasing them, first morning for the thermacell..

Nice bird John congrats
Thanks Guys, TurkeyWes had a swing and a miss yesterday morning....poor guy, bird at 15 feet and I think so close that the shot never expanded and went out like a slug missing the Tom....Thermacells definitely needed these days, mosquitoes and black flies unreal....and the heats getting up, but the good news, I think hens leaving Toms so they may work to calls better...we'll see, still a couple of weeks left...
Finally on the board for this spring. Roosted a tom last night but he was on a neighbouring property and across a road. I figured I was better off starting my morning at a different farm that I have heard quite a few birds on the few times I'd hunted it this spring. After spending the first couple hours there the gobbles had stopped so I took a drive by a couple other properties as I made my way back home. Just before getting home I see a red head out in a recently worked field in the area I had roosted the bird the night before. He had made his way onto the property I can hunt so I parked the truck and did some bushwhacking to get as close I as could to where I thought he was.
He was about 150 yards away on the opposite edge of the field with 2 hens. After a few calls I predicted that he wasn't likely to leave his hens so decided to challenge him. With the turkey tail fan from a tom I shot last year in front of me I started slowly creeping out into the field towards the tom. After walking on my knees hunched over for about 30 yards he finally noticed me approaching and that was all it took. He covered the distance to me within 30 seconds or so. There was a small dip in the terrain about halfway between us and when he went out of sight I laid down prone with my gun barrel sticking out below the tail fan. I let him get to about 20 yards and pulled the trigger. I understand there is a bit of risk with this technique but given the location and circumstances I was willing to accept it.

Nice bird sometimes just got to do what you have to do to get it done. Always be careful when your doing it even on private land. I had a guy trespassing on a property I hunt with a mechanical decoy that would fan and move. I had no idea it was fake until I got closer and realized it was the same movements. I just backed away and thought to my self people have balls to do crazy things even not on there land
Nice sprite!
Cd94 you’re gonna need to change your screen name!!!
Nice bird and congratulations
Congrats on a nice tom, I always wanted to try that move but never had the opportunity
Way to go CD94, I've seen the reap work only once and with a buddy in front of me and me calling behind, had 2 Toms race in and only 1 left, I was already tagged out....It is a huge rush, as long as you're in a field where no one should be shooting at you anyway, have at it...
TurkeyJohn
Right on. Congrats guys.
CD94 congrats, that’s a great story.
My old knees and hips are shot and can’t handle that. Nephew went in Ninja mode and I sat against a tree and told him I would cover his back. lol
Well finally saw a shootable bird today. At 640am Tom came out of bush about 60yds east of me, strutting. Figured this is it, but he keeps going straight out into the field going in and out of strutting. I get binoculars out and see he is following a hen. they go out about 500yds and turn the other way and then come back to bush and disappear. Weather is supposed to turn real nasty out at 1030 so at 10 I start packing thinks up, I look west and east before I stand up and there is a bird about 40yds away. Can't see beard as there is a bush in the way so put gun down and get binoculars out, I see the beard, so put binoculars down and gun up. He figures something wrong now and is starting for bush and away. I let go and it drops like a rock at 45yds. Not my biggest but it is a Tom. To close to the end of season for me to buy another license so my season is done. It was a great day, got home waited for the storm to pass, cleaned turkey hooked up to boat and went jigging SCR and got a limit of eyes, so check one item off my bucket list.

Some great entries lately, and quite a heat wave to finish the season with. I hunted a couple places on Saturday, and didn't hear a single gobble. I did call in a curious hen, who came in to under 3 yards, and was very confused! She was staring right at me, clucking, head bobbing, just knew something wasn't right. Pretty cool encounter, but unfortunately she didn't pull a big silent tom along with her.

TurkeyJohn is our two bird winner, and tied on the longest spurs (and just missed on the single score by half an inch...)
Markster wins the longest beard award for 2022 - seems appropriate based on his picture!
Thanks to everyone who entered, and congratulations to our winners!
Articcat and Markster, please send me your mailing address so I can get your prizes out.

2020 - 45 Contestants, 20 entered at least 1 bird, 7 entered 2 birds
2021 - 39 Contestants, 11 entered at least 1 bird, 8 entered 2 birds

Congrats to everyone who bagged a bird, and for everyone else, there's always next year....I was 7 years before I bagged my first turkey, so I feel the pain.... TurkeyWes almost had some nice birds, couple swings and misses, but that's hunting....Thanks for doing this derby again, a whole lot of fun to see how everyone is doing across the province....
TurkeyJohn
Again thank you lenny for running this contest. This was the worst year I have ever seen since I started 14 years ago. I have had years where I have had up to 10 shooters in range, last year I had 6 shootable birds in range. This year I took the only shootable bird I saw. I have talked to some others that say the same thing, that they saw fewer shooters this year.
I didn't get out as much as I wanted to, didn't get a bird with spurs, didn't get a second bird, but it was still a great season.
The big gobbler on my home farm gave me the slip again, second year in a row, and checking my trail cams shows him hanging out, strutting and cruising around the last week of the season and last week! Hope he makes it to next year!
Hens with chicks on the camera as well, great to see.
Just rec'd a package with some awesome steak knives enclosed.....total surprise and much appreciated....Thanks again gang for doing this derby....Hope to see even more turkeys next year....it was a tough year....
Til then, have a great summer,
TurkeyJohn
