When does everyone get the baits started?

As soon I can get into the bush, tried on the weekend snow was still to deep in the bush were I hunt in wmu 50
Good luck to all that brave the bugs in the spring hunt. Our group only hunt bear in September
I sued to start early but found the bears didn't hit regularly until the leaves started to come out and the bugs were out. I wait until later now
and get the thermacell ready
Our camp crew (I rarely go in the spring) only hunt the first two or three weeks in the spring until the Walleye opener, then,it's the fall hunt. They like to use the "bacon and egg breakfast in the woods" bait system. Laugh all you like, but,It's worked for them more than a few times.
Bears will come out once you get down to 50-60% snow cover. They’ll roam around looking for food and will miles in their search.
I’ve been using deer chow to bring deer to my trail cameras and the bears love it. I have pics of spring bears literally camping out at the feeder 24-7. Once they find it, they hit it steady after replenishing.
Good luck on your hunt.
We have bear out an about around the Bancroft area. Next weekend we'll start baiting
Just set baits and stands today for our first season at a friend's camp. Looking forward to the learning curve.
Good luck dean. Bear hunting/baiting is additive
My most favorite hunt....
Just got a small one on cam the other day in 78A but no open season here. I think they should at least have an archery-only season to pre-empt future conflicts.
huntnmachine, thanks! I'm hoping for some action even if I don't make a kill.
canthitathing,
I also see quite a bit of sign in 78B during the summer months. I haven't seen any bears first hand yet though.
will start baiting next weekend here in 54. Bag of sweet feed and some meat smells to start then onto bread and sweets when they find it.
I was out scouting with a buddy, today. The bugs are starting already. This could be a tough year for bush stompin'.
Lol, this is too funny. Up in northern Ontario, we still have a ton of snow in the woods. In fact, we are going to get another dump later this week. There’s a very good chance that there will be ice on our lakes come opening day for walleye (May long weekend). At this rate I won’t have to worry about bugs until June… seriously! I can’t see us having much of a fawn crop this year.
May long weekend is a long way off. A lot will change before that. Don’t think I’d worry too much yet.
Lake is still froze at my Sudbury area cottage and still snow in the bush but I’m pretty sure the blackflies will be out in full force by the may long weekend regardless
I use a bug net for my head and secure it with my hat. Long sleeves and gloves do the rest.
Trying out essence of anise this year. Besides that I've been saving up my bacon grease and I'll be using good old raspberry jello powder. Lost my hook up for used cooking oil but it shouldn't be too hard to find a new one. Getting very excited for the opener in a couple weeks.
Anyone who’s started a bait seeing any bears?

We set 2 weeks ago and nothing last weekend. I'll find out tomorrow.
Update: no bears on 2 sites. Deer on camera though. Not looking good for our first attempt.
Whenever North Woods law need to trap a bear they stop for donuts. Always seems to work for them. They look like fresh as someone usually eats one. Makes me laugh

I start when the lakes are free of ice. Sure it might be better to begin when the snow pack is down to half but I haven't been doing it then. Still waiting to see signs of activity as of now.
We are heading to the Temagami area on May 06th to start baiting.
The million dollar ? is will we get stuck in snow again on the logging roads or will the snow be gone? lol
We never really know until we get there... :)
We’ve got one bear on our baits, he’s been around for 2 weeks or so now, wmu 49
Jeff,a buddy was up to Martin River last weekend and said some of the roads still had lots of snow on them.Raining here now I think you will hit snow but it might not be to bad by that time.If I here anything else I will let you guys know
Still haven't seen any sign just outside of Dorset
No sign yet, NCR. Couple of really fat raccoons though.
Baits are set. Snow was minimal in the temagami area. :)
Cell cams that actually have reception show no hits yet. Usually takes a few days! :)
Our hunt starts this coming weekend weather permitting...
Cheers!
Good luck
What day are you heading back up if your stopping in north bay I might meet you guys
Our baiting strategy worked to a tee on a nice young boar saturday evening
we put the time in scouting and picking optimal baiting sites over the winter and early spring. baits set up last couple weeks in april (due to the late spring up there) 3 weeks of nothing and then a large boar showed up, a week later it was like a light switched on and there were bears showing up at all times of the day. we had one young boar who was always first in at the bait after rebaiting and that ultimately was his demise
lucky we have the luxury of cellular trail cams made for a total of 2.5h of stand time to notch my tag
Sounds exactly like my hunt for the last 3 spring seasons. Literally tagged out on the first sit. :)
One of our other usual productive spots had zero activity. We believe it was due to hanging a ladder stand 1 week before the hunt. Oh well next year maybe the bears will return because we left the stand up and they will have a year to get used to it... :)
