Moose draw,

If you could apply in groups for a tag and the hunter with the most points had enough to be awarded a tag then pull the remaining hunters out of the draw and remaining draws. The way it is now the group of hunters do not have to claim a tag using their highest points.Then they can apply in the second chance draw, be awarded a tag and not claim it taking the opportunity of hunters with lower points not being awarded a tag and not being able to go on a hunt.I guess the way I see it more hunters would get the opportunity for a hunt. The hunters that complained about the old system I am guessing applied in the southern WMU.s are still get their tag once or twice in a lifetime. What an improvement.

Seems to me that is quite close to what we had. So individuals would rarely get drawn.

Not at all like the old way.One hunter in the group needs the required points to be awarded a tag.The old way you needed only the required number of hunters in the group . All hunters could have had one year without a tag.All tags were paid for or claimed in the surplus. Tags were not wasted . Hunters got to go hunting.Also in the southern WMUs there were no guaranteed group sizes or a very large group required to get a tag.Tag success will not be better in the southern units. Not even close to the old system.

The jury is still out on this new system. I think it will take a few years to get a sense of what groups need to do to get a tag. I’m pretty sure those that can look at the stats, and move to different WMUs to better their chances, will fare better than those that won’t or can’t hunt different areas. New groups or new individuals will no doubt go many years before they are successful. Each year, high point hunters will get weeded out, hopefully giving newer hunters a chance. Our group has hunted together for some 40 plus years. Hopefully with good planning, we should be in good shape for the next few years. After that, all bets are off !!

Unfortunately there are way more people who want tags than moose to support it

There is no good answer but I agree let’s see how this new system works out for a few years.

For those that can look at stats . In the old system in the 2020 draw in wmu. 41 there were1388 first choice for one of 26 bull tags. If the same hunters continued to apply for that bull tag you would’ve awarded one every 53 years. There were449 1st choices for one of 20 cow tags . That’s one every 22 years. The stats were there before to make a choice with better odds for a individual in other areas. Also for example. Last year in wildlife management unit 19 for bow hunting in second chance there were 12 ball tags awarded and not claimed. That is $3000 the Mnr is out . I am pretty sure if there was a deadline and phoning for surplus tags them 12 tags would’ve been claimed by other hunters for the $250 . There is a lot of tags in pretty much every area that are not claimed and take away the chance for other hunters to hunt

It’s a sobering realization to know that you might only draw one or two tags in your lifetime. If I was in that predicament, I would either switch to a unit with better odds, or do a fly-in hunt every 2-3 years. Speaking for myself, a group size of 7 or 8 hunters on one tag would be the max limit. If a group that size couldn’t get one bull tag each year, I would move on.
