When does the moose rut typically start? We are heading up to Nakina Sept 17th to the 24th for our first moose bow hunt.
Is that too early for the rut? Is the rut weather related or does it just happen no matter the weather
Thanks in advance

Should be good for the rut, just pray for cold weather cause even when it is prime rut time if it is to hot they simple don't move in all my experiences,
Last tear in Nakina the temperature was to hot 75 F all week, and the moose were not moving at all.
But the black fly's were terrible.
Thanks for the heads up regarding the black fly's
You should expect to have better rut action later in your hunt. Based on my hunting experiences, breeding heats up around the 25th for about 8 days. So the last few days of your hunt should be fantastic if the weather cooperates. Once breeding begins, it starts getting tougher to bring in horny bulls.
Thanks Sam
you will have a few days where they are on fire good luck
Thank you!
Good luck,
hopefully the weather is nice and cool, we start our bow hunt september 24 till the 5th
Good luck to you also
What Sam said.
The young Bulls are usually on the cruise though, so you should see some action for sure.
Second year not Moose hunting, feels kind of weird.
Walleye are biting and grouse numbers are good.
Good Luck!
Good to know regarding the young Bull movement. Being our first archery hunt we would have no issues taking a young bull....good eats
Thanks Deer Hunter!
Hi Guys ! Just came back from our Bow Hunt in WMU 22.. Was there from Sept.24 th - Oct. 2nd... we flew in and found the weather warmer then usual and very windy at times
both southerly and northerly winds..
I called very early and used all my knowledge, only heard a Cow respond from afar... So , seems to me the Rut hadn't started because although we saw tracks , the Bulls stayed away !!
I feel , especially on this lake , things pick up closer around the first week of Oct. and lasting a bit into the second week and then, "boom" its done !! Did anyone else experience similar results ?
Guys who flew into WMU 16C had better results ..yes , they were further up North and got two Bulls and a calf from two different lakes !
