The Alberta government has announced that they won't support or participate in the federal plan to confiscate guns that have been banned under the latest laws. The first 90 seconds of the video clearly shows how the Alberta government views the new law. It will be interesting to see how other provinces respond. Will the OPP be solicited to do the same thing the RCMP has been asked to do in Alberta?

Alberta has a long history of fighting the federal Government in Court and losing. The Supreme Court of Canada many year ago affirmed that firearms legislation is the responsibility of the Federal Government. Being part of Canada is not like a buffet table where you pick and choose what laws you wish go follow and what laws you decide you will ignore. The OPP will probably not be solicited this way as Doug Ford believes in the rule of law as was amply displayed with his actions during the Covid Crisis and so called freedom convoy. Even if he decided to play along there are hundreds of Municipal Police Services in Ontario that would be directed otherwise by their Police Services Boards. If landlocked Alberta thinks it can pull of a solo act and prosper, I say good luck with that.Quote:

The western provinces aren't saying they won't enforce the law. What they are saying is they do not want the police they pay for diverted from their regular duties to manage and participate in the confiscation process.
Enforcing the law means if some gang banger is found with a Vz58 the firearm would be seized and he could be charged. It does not mean being a collection service and driving out to pick up Grandpa's rusty Mini-14. OPP resources in rural areas are stretched thin enough and the last thing we need is for them to be taken off patrol for the federal government's pet gun control project.

If you knew your history you would already know that Quebec law is unique in Canada because Quebec is the only province in Canada to have a juridical legal system under which civil matters are regulated by French-heritage civil law.

It's not about picking and choosing which law to enforce. It's about the police being commandeered to be a cataloging and pick-up service for the federal government. If the federal government wants to confiscate "assault" rifles it should staff and fund the initiative without diverting local and provincial police resources from more important responsibilities.Quote:

My underststanding is that Alberta,Saskatchewan and Manitoba haven't refused to enforce the law,they're simply refusing to provide manpower and to pay for it.
I don’t consider myself affiliated with any particular party as they all lie and will eventually let you down. IMO you have the Federal Liberals trying to appeal to the left with stricter gun laws while the Alberta Conservatives are appealing to their base by standing up to the Federal government. It’s all about maintaining power and securing votes.

This firearms plan by the feds reminds me of the national daycare system they are putting in place. The feds take the credit for it, but drop it in the laps of the provinces to implement, and expect them to happily go along with it, at the provinces' expense.
I'd like to see what happens when most of the provinces invoke the "notwithstanding" clause.
