2 stroke outboard gas

Okay so this is the first season I've owned a boat, little 12ft aluminum I picked up off another member. I was able to score a 7.5 2 stroke evinrude off a buddy for a good price and she runs mint.

I figure I'm still gonna have about 3 gallons of pre-mixed gas in the tank when I'm done . Will it go bad over winter? If so I can get it disposed of and get fresh stuff for winter, otherwise it will be stored in my garage until I use the motor again.

Now when it comes to storing the boat for the winter, it will be stored outside flipped upside-down at my place and I've traded a favour to a neighbour and he's offered to store the motor in the heated part of his shop whenever I'm done for the season. What's the best course of action for winterizing?...or do I have to with it going into heated storage? Is it worth it/suggested I spray some fogging oil down the plugs?

Go buy yourself some Johnson/Evinrude 2+4 fuel stabilizer.
I mix this with all my gas regardless if it sits.
It would be good to run the engine with some stabilizer in your gas before storing. There’s always a bit of gas that stays in engine, this would treat it.

Personally I like sea foam works as a stabilizer and a carb cleaner. My boss even uses it in his $100,000.00 corvette when storing for the winter.
You might also want to check the oil in the shaft that there is no water in it, usually I change the shaft oil each fall before storage.

In addition to above, drain the tank fuel hose. I find the fuel left in the hose goes bad way before the gas in the tank. Fuel stabilizer is your friend....

I've run sta-bil Marine 360 in the tank since I filled it in the spring. Thanks for the heads up on draining the fuel hose Redbull. And Greatwhite, don't know when the lower oil was last changed so probably doing that before storage aswell

That is an excellent bit of advice! The only way to tell if the seal is leaking is to drain the oil. Could save the bottom end?

Instead of storing that fuel - get out there and use it up! Fall fishing is excellent

I’d advise against storing gas for 7+ months, regardless of the brand or type of fuel conditioner you’re using. Start next season with fresh fuel, preferably ethanol free premium. For storage i’d run stabilized gas through the motor and kill it with the carb full. Spray storage seal or oil in the cylinders, and drain and refill the lower unit gear oil. Bleed your fuel line completely to get rid of the old fuel. Remove prop to make sure no fishing line is wrapped on your prop shaft. Grease shaft and spacers when you put back on and use a new cotter pin. Lube any grease nipples.

I always disconnect the fuel line with the engine idling and let it run until it quits, rather than leaving gas in the carb for several months, even if it is treated.

Mike: First of all, always use premium gas without ethanol in it. You can buy this at Canadian tire or costco gas bars. When you fill your boat gas tank put the first 3 or 4 litres in your car as the previous person probably filled regular gas and you don't want any of that that is still in the pipes in your gas tank. Then add sea foam to the gas tank as a stabilizer. I always add any left over gas with oil mixed in, to my car gas tank. It will not last the winter. That way it is not ruined. Follow the other members advise for changing lower unit oil. You can store the engine in any garage for the winter.

Canadian tire premium now has ethanol in it. All premium gas will soon.

I've always run premium with no ethanol in it. and mixed in sta-bill marine 360. From the advice here I'll probably now toss that gas in my old civic and get new premium for next season.

I've thought about doing this, but feared that the outboard oil would do bad things to my truck engine (eg. clog injectors, etc). What's the mechanic's opinions on doing this? Will 50:1 do any harm to your car/truck engine?

Just FYI, I went to shell in Sarnia today, asked about ethanol in premium fuel and she said for now its still ethanol free but they have been told the change is coming, just not sure when. This ticks me off. I always take 5gal of premium ethanol free fuel stabilized to the cottage in the fall, so I have fuel there through the winter when I have to walk into the place. It keeps all winter if not used and is fine come spring for the quad or boat. That won't be the case with fuel containing ethanol.

As for burning mixed gas in a vehicle, I used to do that all the time with older sophisticated engines. For todays engines if I need to I dilute it an awful lot. My F150 holds 135L in the tank. Adding a liter of mixed fuel will be so minimal that I don't worry about it, but it takes a few tanks to use up much. I'd dilute and burn in a lawnmower before a vehicle.

All of the above is good advice ! Is your gas tank metal or plastic ? I've had empty steel tanks develop rust inside them on me due to condensation. Also about your boat ; don't let the boat rest directly on the ground put some wood boards under it (never let steel contact aluminum) and when flipping the boat do so as gently as possible to avoid stress on the rivets.

Like others have said, use only premium ethanol free gas. Always use Sea Foam stabilizer. It is the best product. I put my left over oil and gas mixtures into my car when it is about 3/4 full so the oil is well diluted. You can also use the oil and gas mixture in your chain saw, weed wacker, leaf blower, etc. Don
't save it for several months. Even treated with Sea foam it can deteriorate and hurt your engine next year.

I do it all the time, can't tell the difference.. my ATV probably runs more old boat gas then straight fuel.

Like others have said. Run the motor dry with some sort of stabilizer in the gas. It won't get all the gas out, but most of it. This helps tremendously.
Change the foot oil in case it's contaminated with water, that way things won't rust over the winter ( the water will separate from the oil once it sits)

Drain the gas from your tank and hose and use it over the winter in something else.. my old boat gas goes in my snowblower, ATV or vehicle.. mixed gas won't hurt anything, worst case ontario is that it carbons up the plug a bit. In the spring I use my leftover snowmobile gas in my lawnmower.
