Little buck down
I went out my neighbors boy (young man now) out for his first bow hunt of the season and we were successful.
He came and picked me up just after 5pm... He brought his crossbow and I brought my .223 just encase a coyote popped out as I have no desire to hunt until the control hunt with my muzzle-loader :)
We arrived and began walking the edge of the standing corn. It didn't take long before we got busted by a doe. A few minutes later another deer takes off (we didn't see antlers so assume another doe)....
As we continue to walk the other edge of the standing cornfield we seen a few turkeys so next week we should be heading back there for them. Anyway we made a big circle and then I did a mini drive to him with no luck.
Now just after sunset we started making our way back to where we seen the does. Just before coming out of the little bush we were in, I spot a deer body on a little hill across some corn 80 yds away and what looks like about 10 yds from the corn edge....As we look at the deer we notice antlers so we make a game plan...
We move downwind about 100 more yds and cut across the corn (that 100 yds away allowed us to make some noise through the corn without the deer hearing us. As we crossed the cornfield and make it to the edge, we slowly made our way to the last location we seen the deer. We took our time with me in the lead always looking through the trees :)
I spotted him about 20 yds away up on a slight ridge. I turned to the boy and whispered to him that the deer is there. He stepped up, loaded the bolt into the crossbow, took his time and took the shot. I heard the arrow hit and watch his luminok fly right through the double lung shot deer.
At the shot the deer turned and ran, crashing down that hill as he ran off. (we thought we heard him crash dead?) So we waited a few minutes before we started to track. Seen lots of bright blood, as we followed the blood trail for 50 yds or so we started getting nervous and thought about backing out but after a few yards more we found him. (what a relief)
Boy is super happy and I am very proud that we managed to sneak up on a deer and get a kill shot off.
We dropped him off at the butchers last night.....
