Been stupid busy this year. Only been out a total of 3 days since October 1. Seen one white flag. Finally got some time today to spend in the climber.
Could be this will be my first season eating tag soup since 1982.
At least there is a ton of fresh sign. They seem to have fully switched to their winter food sources in my area.
Went out Saturday, all I saw were coyote and turkey tracks.
I'm done for the season. Sorry to hear you haven't made it out much this season Joe.

No deer harmed. Had 2 does and a spike that almost came into range around 430 pm but 8 coyotes appeared and the whole lot boogied off up the hill with the yotes in hot pursuit. Got my truck well and truly stuck in a drift in the field. Got down from the climber at 5:15 pm and than was digging until 945 pm to get the truck out. Thought at one point i was there for the night.
Might have time for another afternoon sit tomorrow.

Now that really sucks, coyotes mess you up and get stuck. I still have a tag, but have filled 2 and don't need 3, so calling it quits. I would like to give the dog another shot at tracking, but not at the expense of another deer.
I'm still out just North of you, Joe. I have a buck wandering around but there's no pattern and the coyotes are relentless even close to the houses. I've baited apples heavily since the ML season but the deer herd seems sparse in my area. The deep snow seemed to stop all movement for a few days except in very heavy cover.

ive got yotes crossing the bridge from my neighbours field and coming to my barn. time to devote more time scaring them instead.
Back in climber as I type this. Yesterday didn't work but hopefully today pans out.
Most of the snow is gone. Wet, rain +9 stiff SW wind. Feels like October.

Streak may be intact. Buck and a doe came in 20 minutes ago. Pouring rain. Caught me totally by surprise Had a hard time getting the bow up.
Buck knew something was up. Doing the foot stomp. Put a bolt into him at 30 yards.
He jumped, ran 30 than walked 10 slowly. Stood still 15 minutes. Than very slowly walked 5 more awkwardly lay down.
He is about 80 yards from me. I am still in climber and guessing I have to wait here a while. Did not seem text book so don't want to bump him
Figured out the non textbook part. Recovered the bolt and it is intact but missing the front insert and Broadhead. Bolt is otherwise perfectly intact. Good blood right up to including the fletching.
Loud siren sounded and seemed to startle the deer. He jumped up and ran. This maybe 15 minutes ago. So that's when I climbed down and found bolt
Might be a long night.
Officially a race between me and the Coyotes. They are on the trail. Beady lights reflecting back in the flash light.

been a couple hours now, hope that means good news.
At the time you posted that the outcome was still unknown. Pulled out until 930 pm and than picked up the trail. Blood tracked for 2.2 km and found him at 1:20 am. Was a hell of a challenge in the dark and rain. Have a few pictures of the bolt and the trail but phone battery died during the tracking. Dressed him, loaded him and dropped him at the butchers on the way home so no pictures of the deer due to dead phone. He was a medium sized 8 pt. I'll post some more tomorrow. thats a long tracking job, but good for you for sticking to it and making a successful recovery and congrats on the deer.

Species, that is great to hear. That is an amazing job, and at night and rain. Wish everyone could track like that. Where was he shot, that is a long way to travel. I'm not asking to be bad, always curious to know how far they travel. I have double lunged them and seen them go 400yds a couple of times. I'm thinking a one lung the might go for days.
