Who's putting in their garden this weekend?

With the weather being nice in the 2 week forecast I plan on putting in most of the gardens this weekend. I think I will leave the peppers out for another week and see if the weather pattern holds.

Plans for this weekend green beans ,bokchoy,spinnish, zucchini, tomatoes, Swisschard, lettuce, kale.

Plan on holding the pepper patch it's 15 by 11ft area, that will hold around 25 to 30 pepper plants. Doing a few more banana peppers this year only had 2 last year and they produced alot . I made at least a dozen jars of pickled peppers and they were great hit and easy to make.

Who's taking advantage of the weather and putting in their garden's ?

Not a chance. I've learned over many years that heavy frost is very possible up to the end of May +. Have planted pansies though as they can handle colder weather .

I have potatoes and onions in. Starting to see sprouts
For other veggies I always look around mothers day to get them planted

Way to early in my area, I bought one hanging flower the other day to give the bumble bees something to eat and one tomato plant but they both go in the garage each night.

I'm a confirmed "not till after the 24 weekend" for plants. In the mean time bumper crop of asparagus this year, peas coming along nicely as are the onion. Even the leeks are doing well.

Tilled up one garden ,made it a bit bigger as well. If it works out it will give me an extra lettuce and bean crop. . About 6 year ago I had a radish crop done by the end of May in time to replace it with other vegetables. The past 2 years it's been late getting in early June, 3 years ago it was mid may. I usually put in as the weather pattern holds peppers I won't put in till the night lows stay above 8

I'm still going ahead with half on Sunday will be stopping in at the nursery after a morning appointment. Worst-case I loose 30 to 50 bucks and a few hours ,best case ill be picking fresh greens by the end of the month.

Most of my cold hardy vegetables have been in since early April. Unless it gets below -7 Celsius they can handle it, if it does get that cold I put row covers over them. My cold hardy selection this year includes cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, parsley, onions, lettuces, spinach and celery. Garlic that was planted in late October of last year, sprouted early and is now about 10” tall. I sowed carrot seeds between my garlic rows a couple weeks ago and they’ve all emerged. The parsnip was planted the same time as the carrots but has yet to surface.

The prep work is done on most of my raised beds to start beans and peas this weekend. I should have started peas a month ago but I’ve changed their location and built a new raised bed for them. Now I’ll be planting 24’ of them. My kids gobble them up to quick to freeze any, so I’m hoping this time around there will be more.

Cucumbers, squash and zucchini are all started indoors waiting for the end of may. Our nights are still a bit too cold for these plants.

Tomatoes, peppers and eggplant are bulking up under the grow lights and also waiting for some warmer nights. I’ve got 72 tomato plants and 40 peppers waiting to come outside and harden off. It’s worth starting peppers in February. They are of a good size and incredibly green and leafy. Hopefully will translate into a bumper crop. As for the tomatoes, I’m experimenting with more beefsteak varieties this year and only a few plum varieties.

I’ll probably be starting my herbs indoors this weekend or next. Basil, oregano and summer savoury mainly. The thyme over wintered nicely and we’re already using it. Maybe I’ll get a couple of rosemary too.

No potatoes this year. My crop failed last year and I don’t want to waste the space. I might look into container growing for them and see if it will work.

Forgot to mention the asparagus I started last year came up nicely. They’re still too small to harvest so maybe in a year or two more they will mature.

I’m looking forward to a productive gardening season. Bring on the warm weather.

Sounds like you have a great start going and much more to come out. My asparagus is doing well this year have had it a few seasons and they have taken a few beatings. The first year the dog took them out last year I think half them froze and died from a late freeze. Garlic is doing well .
The potatoes I tried last year in a 45 gallon drum and filled the barrel a few inches every few days and they were very small . I'm also leaving them out this year.

I usually buy everything from a local nursery next to my work, only things I don't buy are whatever seeds that can go directly into the ground.

I should start all my own maybe next season that's when you wouldn't want to take the unnecessary risks of a late frost .

I'll be preserving more this year just got another 50 jars and will get more as needed. Maybe try a home made tomato sauce and plan on stocking up on the green beans picked up a food saver last week see if I can pack them that way. Not liking the blanched asparagus that I packed away last month when it was on sale. Good flavor and tastes good but turns to soft its ok in a omelet tho lol. Maybe try less of a blanch next time as they were just skinny ones.

Ya asparagus is a 20 yer commitment. First couple of years just establishing the plants by year 3 can start to pick the odd spear and every year after that the harvest gets bigger and bigger. Found they don't like compost but prefer commercial fertilizer a balanced one during the summer with slightly heavier feed early fall. Once establish a high nitrogen in the spring gives 'em a good boost.

My garlic did well over the winter and all but one didn't take. They're about 10 inches high and I pulled the straw off of them this morning. By the way we had a light frost here this morning. Plus I got my onions as well as my green and yellow beans.

I'll start hardening off my cucumbers and tomatoe plants starting tomorrow...Great idea of planting carrots between my garlic rows. That'll save me some room in my raised beds. Lettuce will be going in tomorrow...

It's been too wet to use the tractor in my garden. Maybe come the end of the month ?

So put in
12 tomatoes 6 beefsteak and 6 early girls.
8 green leaf lettuce 4 red
20 Swisschard
15 bokchoy
2 zucchini
A line of kale
And a 7ft double row of Kentucky wonder green beans seeds went in.

That's about half in the one, more beens and lettuce are planned along with some others. Then get the pepper patch done if the weather hold next week.

Little to cold...usually wait until the May 24 weekend

Expanding the garden another 7x14 ft will till it up in the next few days. That will give us 3 beds 1 seven by 12 and 2 that are together with a fence that will be a total of 22x 33 ft long.

Now more plotting lol.

Since my my last installment I have put in

Some black dinosaur kale.

8 head lettuce

Some red Swisschard

78 red onion bulbs

2 more zucchini

I know a cold night is coming and already coming up with a plan.

So today I put in alot of seeds 2 7 ft rows of snow peas

Pack of spinach

a 4 by 5 of carrots

a 30 inch by 7 ft area of pacchoy

2 5ft runs of radishes

Left some space for my second runs

Will put the cucumber seeds in the next couple of days and if the weather holds will fill a 7 by 15 ish area of pepper plants. And plant some sweet millions lol. More lettuce will also be continues every few weeks for the next month or so . . Thinking next weekend I'll put In the second round of 8 more leaf lettuce.
Also opened up a spot for some basil ,rosemary, thyme, dills in and maybe a few other herbs.

Our bearded dragon and tortoise enjoyed thier first fresh meal from the garden. Picked off a few leafs from the ones I put in last week lol.

Lucky for us the weather pattern looks amazing at the end of the month. Last night it was showing lows of 14 and 15 for may 26,29th. . Dont think we need to worry about the moon frost this season.

We heated our garage in 2021 never goes below 6 and when the fires going its great even on the coldest days of winter lol. My potted stuff will go there tonight I'll cover most of what's in the ground just for good measure. Shouldn't take to long

Another frosty morning covered up the peppers last night. Over the weekend I put in about 40 pepper plants 2 cayenne, 2 red chili ,couple of sweet banana peppers, 3 hot banana, hot Hungarian, California wonder greens ,big red some Sheppards and 10 jalapeños.
Also put in 3 types of cucumber 4 cherry tomatoes a second round of leaf lettuce that I found and replaced growing wild from the garden from last season. 4 eggplants and my 2 green trees were put in over the weekend.

Who knew it took carrot seeds so long to pop up lol. .

It's not bad if you water regularly I collected 65 gallons from the last rain fall as I only had one barrel out. Thinking about hooking up a 1000 liter tank and have a gravity fed irrigation. At the moment we are only holding 12o gallon and watering about 40 gallon a week from a few barrels.

On the bright side I'll be chopping up my first pacchoy in the coming days. Going to try and harvest just a few of the biggest stems off each plant and see how it grows back. We did this with our Swisschard last season and it was great . One 8 to 10 ft row about 6 inch apart ,gave a few meals a week all summer by just taking a leaf or 2 off each plant every few days. . This year I have 4 smaller rows both white and red will be replacing the red tomorrow as I assume a squirrel nibbled them up. Didn't eat them just bit the stems and left the rest on the ground lol.

Yeah I covered up the peppers again tonight .
I had some left over plants that I also covered with the rest. When I took the cover off when I left for work I grabbed the pots to take in to see if anyone wanted them . Anyway I could feel the warmth of the pots in my hands that are still sitting in my back seat lol.

Those clear table clothes work wonders . So do bed sheets haha whatever works without crushing them. 2 king sheets cover a good size area and is covering up the majority of the peppers now. Cut up a dozen garden stakes into smaller portions to keep them off the plants. Only takes a few minutes when needed.

Hopefully the cooler weather is behind us after tonight.

That looks amazing and we'll put together. Haven't learned to post pics yet since they took the simplicity away through tappa talk lol. Had our first meal last night I thinned out a large bowl of pakchoy . When I replaced my red Swisschard also grabbed some red Russian kale. My wife posted a 3 week pic yesterday on her Facebook a pic each week from the last 3 weeks. It's starting to come along well.

Get a few barrels and stock up when it rains. .
I'm stuck watering every other day to preserve it until I get a few more hooked up . Only have 5 water barrels and with the expansion I'm going through alot. . Like to water daily when it's hot but I also don't give them lots.

When to put in your garden plants is always a crap shoot - most of us are anxious to get things in but sometimes it could be a disappointment - my biggest problem is keeping the deer, raccoons , groundhogs, rabbits from getting at my garden - I had a 7 ft wire fence around my garden and that kept the deer out but the darn raccoons climb the fence and do a job on my corn -so this year I'm adding two strands of electric wire on top of the fence to try and stop them - but no matter - there is nothing like going out into your yard and harvesting stuff you have grown - knowing it isn't laced with poison -

To keep the cabbage butterfly from laying eggs on my broccoli and cabbage plants I took a 6 ft wire fence and cut it into 10 ft sections - then folded the fence into semicircular shape - staked this into the ground and covered it with very fine netting - this way I don't have any problems with the cabbage worms - also using weed block fabric this year to keep the weeds under control -

Still no photos but the gardens doing well probably 4 or 5 meals already. Yesterday picked 2 heads of lettuce taking one into work for a coworker. Radishes will be pulled within the week. The charred is coming in good now from what ever picked at it earlier on.

The pacchoy I don't think will last like I wanted it to. Had 2 meals of it have another to pick but it's starting to flower out so it won't last. Oh well I will start more then transfer over when the time comes. Need to put in more beens green and yellow today along with a another double row of peas then fill in what's available next weeks with more lettuce. I like to continue planting it as long as I can.

everything is coming along nicely. Rain has come in a timely fashion. Peas are in full flowers and podding out. First seeding of carrots was a bust as only 4 plants emerged reseeded the bed hopefully better germination with the cooler/wetter weather expected. Time to start the fall crops seeded fennel, kohlrabi, and Radicchio to go in once the beans and peas are done.

Lots of rain coming over the next few days let's hope it pushes a little more north .

Rain started down here Clear Creek, Norfolk County about 1900hrs Sunday and as of 0800hrs Monday we got 2 inches of rain and it's still coming down pretty nicely. We haven't had any rain to speak of since the May long weekend so the farmers should be happy with this soaker ! They won't have to irrigate and it will help recharge their ponds.

LOts of rain in Middlesex county too last night. Yehhhh! Getting tired of hand watering every day for 3 weeks.

Yep all stocked up with a 2 week supply again. Shouldn't need to water for a few day's after today.

Hopefully some of this system helps out the fire's and lift our bann.

A much neededrain for sure. The plants in the garden have just about doubled in size within a day or two of the rain with the exception of my pepper plants. The hot bananna pepper plants have remained almost as if they were dormant. I doubt very much if they've grown a half an inch since planting them back in May... Any ideas...

Just because you don’t see growth above soil does not mean that there is no growth going on at root level. Peppers need a good amount of heat to take off. Once we get into some steady sun and warmer temps your peppers should explode. But if your soil has nutrient deficiencies you could mix in some blood and bone meal around the base and water it in. A table spoon of the mix should do, per pepper.

From looking at the plants yesterday and again this afternoon, looks as if my pepper plants have grown a good three inches overnite... Took them a tad longer to kick in compared to the rest of the garden and all is good.. This coming weekend I had planed on fertilizing and will do to help them along...

Looks like a soggy long weekend coming up but the garden will love it ! I have a fair size (50x100 feet) garden down by Lake Erie , Norfolk County. So far any started plants are hanging in there and the stuff I planted from seeds are just starting to sprout so a slow soaker would be nice.

Started 12 rainbow blend peppers so hopefully I can get one of every color. Also Started some Hungarian and sweet banana peppers.

First time starting indoors will 3 inch by 3 in by 3 in be ok ?

In my experience 18 oz solo cups are the way to go for starts. I believe they are 3" round by 5" tall. I germinate my peppers in a moist paper towel in a ziplock bag. This way I can ensure each pot has a viable plant. Once they sprout and show their first leaves then I can put them in the pots.

That's usually how I do most of my seeding is the paper towel but just put 2 to 3 seeds per pot and will snip the weakest as they sprout.

Hopefully I don't have to transplant them I was thinking about solo cups.
