Hey folks,
Looking for a decent high powered air rifle for under $300... anything that can shoot 1000 FPS give or take. And something good for both target practice and taking our varmint (rats, etc). I've read up on the Crosman Vantage Nitro Piston .22 Cal - it's cheap but pretty decent all around.. any others?
weihrauch under lever, would be a used one for $300.

I bought the Vantage.22 air rifle a few years ago. It’s perfect for pest control around my property. I would say it hits around 700-750 fps, plenty enough. I paid $130 on sale.

I bought a very nice wooden-stocked, scoped .22 very recently directly from gamo.
Paid about 160 usd. I’m very pleased with it.
Picked up a .177 Stoeger break action which states about 1000fps. Accurate, louder then expected though. Came with a scope and was about $200 a few years ago at SFRC.

My father in law bought a .177 break action stoeger. Shoots pretty fast. Scope is ok. You’re not shooting far so good enough I guess. Know problems taking out skunks with proper shot placement but anything bigger I wouldn’t risk it. Good gun but if it was up to me depending on what varmint you’re planning on taking I would go for the slower shooting .22 . Because even though it’s slower it will take out raccoons if needed and has more energy on impact.
what kind of amo would you recommend for the bigger sized varmint like those mentioned above?

I'd just shoot subsonic 22's. No louder really and more KE due to higher bullet weight. If higher KE is an issue due to backstop/downrange issues than i guess air gun might be the answer. Not a problem at my house i use the .308 out the family room window for everything from crows to deer. Small targets at 100+ yards let me check zero before deer season.

Once you own a pcp air rifle you’ll never want a springer again(unless you’re willing to drop $1000 for an Air Arms). I have a Umarex Gauntlet in .22. Air compressor will run you $500 but you're good to go once you have it. No springer will match the accuracy you’ll get with a pcp. Ten shot groups and 40yds that will fit in a dime once you figure out the pellet brand and weight your gun likes. Even a cheap pcp with a good scope will give you cz or Savage .22 accuracy. A truly good one ( anything made by Air Arms) will match , or beat the accuracy from an Anchutz, Suhl, Walther KKJ rimfire. My friend has an Air Arms pcp in .25 cal. For varmint control on his farm. Single head shot easily kills porkies, coon, and beaver. He can hit beer caps with it consistently at 60-70yds

I’ve looked at airsource, but they seem to never have stock of the items i’m after and their pricing seems to have a hefty markup.

I bought my Umarex Gauntlet from Londero Sports in Quebec in May. Gun was on sale for $339.99. Shipping was only $18.70 which I felt was reasonable. Three day shipping. They have an excellent supply of air gun stuff.
Not sure how others feel but my experience with Gamo springers has not been good. Ive owned or shot four different models and none of them were what were what I called accurate. We set a chrony up with one brand new one and the velocities were +/- almost 105fps over 20 shots. Groups were lousy even at 20 meters. Suspect it’s a seal issue?
