I was invited to participate in a HydroOne focus group back in the spring, it paid $100 for a few hours of my time so I did it. The focus of it was the rollout of a pamphlet that we will (or some may have already) received with our bill and every sentence was analyzed for reaction …the topic of the pamphlet was the imminent rollout of new SMART meters, which are coming very soon….these will be wifi-enabled to connect to your home internet and will also help you “manage” your home electricity use and your wifi-enabled thermostat, fridge etc….so get ready folks, the STATE is working its way into your household and it’s tying everything together, the push to electric vehicles and electric heat, and I have already seen a notice about Hydro One offering up rebates to allow them to control your thermostat in times when the grid is stressed. Yes - I know that HydroOne is not the government but it’s just about as close as you can get without actually being. The Independent Electricity Operator controls the grid at the direction of the province and the province sets policy.
Good time for an off grid cabin somewhere.
