Basically, as the title says, what kind of knife do you use to field dress your animal? Do you use a fixed blade?, folding blade? What are some of the brands does everyone use?

Two home made by me.
And the buck folding used most ( good for quartering the moose to )
Buck 102 woodsman, fixed blade
I’ve been using a Buck 121 for 40 years.
Someone gave me one of those knives with the disposable razor-sharp blades but I have yet to try it out.
Havalon piranha, And a outdoor edge gut hook kinfe.
In my limited experience I have come to the conclusion that a small cheap knife is best. They require sharpening more frequently but thats not an issue for me.
Schrade oldtimer folding lock blade. I like a pointed blade and schrades hold an edge really well for the price.

Been using a Buck pursuit for 20+ years now. It's been a fantastic knife and holds an edge well
for butchering I use VictorianOx knives
I use a cheap CTS 4" fixed blade. I have tried longer fixed blades but I find the shorter the better for me.
Fifty years ago,I was given a knife by my father-in-law called a Khyber duel blade locking folder. I can't count the number of game animals it's cleaned, but,it doesn't know "quit". I have no idea what kind of steel the blades are, but, they hold an edge like crazy and sharpen to a razor edge quickly. I also use a wide bladed Rapala Skinner with a gut zipper tip that opens carcasses up in seconds.
Fixed blade normark. Had it since 1983.
Not sure how many years I’ve had it but it’s been a long time. An original Russel belt knife….
All I use well when I bought it was a $8 moraknife. Now they're around $15, I cleaned moose, many black bear, and a few deer with my cheap mora

Camillus Tyrant.
It did 6 geese, 4 turkeys and 3 does before I had to sharpen it!
Just love it!

Got one of these for 2 reasons. 1. So my sausage fingers wouldn't slip off smaller handled knives so easy and 2. The orange is easier to see when field dressing after dark and you set it on the ground for a second, then spend 5 minutes trying to find it again. Also keep a havalon piranta in my pack as well.
I got one of those guys, probably bought it 45 years ago, a guy at work used to flog them for the company. Real good knife and does indeed hold a edge well, also came with a serial number and warranty which was lifetime, very well made US quality.
I regulary carry a old school Solingen German Made antler handled H8 knife, I abuse the crap out of it and have never invested in a good sharpening system, so its more ofen blunt than sharp.
It’s interesting to see the different responses. Knives are a personal item and the make/style is a reflection of individual tastes.
I’m sure everyone appreciates their knives for their functionality and use and although we all hunt, most everyone’s choice is different.
The reasons why I like my knife is that the blade is fixed, comes in a sheath with a snap lock, the blade is 5-1/2” long and narrow which is good for removing the anus from moose and deer. My only complaint is that it doesn’t have a wooden handle; I would have preferred hickory or other North America wood.
I have an old Schrade fixed blade, not sure of the model. It has a 3 1/2" blade and has field dressed many deer and turkeys for me. TC
I had been gifted a Buck 110 as a young hunter and carried it afield for 20 to 25 years.
Unfortunately, I allowed another hunter to use it while removing a bruin skull and got the knife back missing the tip.
I have replaced it this year with an Iron Will blade. I used their broadheads last year on a moose with success. Thought I would give the knife a chance.
They promote the use of A2 steel. I don't know my metals truthfully. Discovered the company on a Meateater podcast. cantgetright, you better than me you have found your knife, I had a perfect knife few years back, loved this knife except it was camo. field dressed a deer around noon, laid it down to get rope on deer then never seen knife again. I searched for it for an hour, even went back the next year. No more camo for me, the brighter the better. This go for all things I care as always have camo over everything anyways
I have a Buck 110 that I’ve carried for 55 yrs. It’s skinned and gutted a pile of moose and deer over the years. A few touches with ceramic rods keeps it razor sharp.
I too have a 110 buck knife that I have had for years, lots of times I do use a cheap box cutter.... Seems to do the job well too
I've got a grohmann short blade skinner with stag horn handle that i love using while skinning, but over the past few harvests the outdoor edge razor pro for field dressing..
to field dress i got a havilon, dad got it for me as a christmas present, will only use it to field dress though. if im doing something quick just a buck knife or something.
I have owned a few cheap knives in the past 50 years but for the past 25 years what normally goes on my belt is a fixed blade Ruko that I bought from Zellers. I am generally too lazy to go grab other knives so I have cleaned many turkeys, grouse, rabbits, and deer with this Ruko right after getting home from an outing!
Other knives that I own (Buck, Browning, HuntShield...) are still mostly like new because they get carried in the pocket or backpack but never actually get used on fish or game.
Is use a Buck folding knife no complaints
Outdoor Edge, replaceable blade.
I have many I use, my favourite all have S30V steel.
Easy to sharpen and stays sharp for a long time.
My favourite knife the last few years has been a bench made pukko
Lol I had to edit my original post as I listed the wrong model number of my knife. (It’s a Buck 121 Guide knife which was discontinued about
20 years ago).
I did just give myself an early birthday present and picked up a Buck 105 Pathfinder with the Micarta handle… almost too pretty to use!
Buck has sure stepped it up. Great product line. I have a bunch from the Pro Series. S30V or S35V.
Most recently a small 1084 spear point fixed blade with a stabilized buckeye Burl handle that I made myself.
