Limit of 5 for the semi auto, as many as it holds for any other action if you are referring to while you are hunting with a centrefire rifle. The semi must be capable of only holding 5 total, not that you only put 5 in a rifle capable of holding more.
I believe that Ontario allows for 8 rounds in the semi-auto M1 Garand (30.06 or 308) for hunting. I have been told this is a provincial rule, as Alberta requires hunters with an M1 Garand to use 5-round en bloc clips vs the default 8 round clips.
Not a lawyer, and I don't play one on TV, so please verify.
If the 8 shot garand is still legal by federal law, it's okay to use it to hunt in Ontario. That said, I wouldn't count on you finding any Ontario CO knowing it was legal, so save yourself the trouble and stick with the 5 shot pinned clip.
The old regs - maybe 20 years ago - stated that any magazine for a semi-automatic centerfire was illegal under the criminal code.
I spoke with the MNRF - sometime in the early 2000's, and the revised the wording to the following up until 2018.
"Under the Criminal Code of Canada you cannot possess any clip/magazine that holds more than five shots for a semi-automatic centrefire non-restricted firearm unless that clip/magazine has been specifically exempted, pursuant to the federal regulations."
From 2018 on, the wording is.
"Under the Criminal Code of Canada you generally cannot possess any clip/magazine that holds more than five shots for a semiautomatic centrefire firearm."
ive also always thought it was 5 shots for a rifle. currently only use shotgun to hunt so im not up to date on that side of things.
In Ontario it’s same as the legal Federal limit. Could have 13 if you shoot a 357. By one of the lever gun makers.
It should only take one to do the job but having a couple of back up shots doesn't hurt ? In case his friends show up ?
Rifles - no limit on the number of rounds - except for autoloaders.
If you have one of the old .44-40 winchester 1892 with the 24 inch barrel and full length mag - 14 shots.
The M94 in 44 mag is a 10 shot. I have one of these, but have never used more than 4 shots.
Most anyone in our camp have shot is 9. Was watching an open hard wood bush, so he could see for quite a distance. He shot 4 deer that came running out to him. Emptied his first five out of the Remington 742 and put another clip in and kept shooting.
hunter06, I had the same type of shooting with that same gun, only I wasn't as good a shot.
It’s not the rifle, it’s the magazine that is restricted to 5 rounds for auto loading centre fire.
This^^
You can have ten round “pistol” mags that fit in semiautomatic rifles, it’s technically legal. Many pistol caliber carbines use ten round mags.
