But we see more deer in the evening
I'm 50/50 for each now, although I just shot my biggest this week at first light.
In my experience I've seen more bucks chasing does in the a.m.
Deer are consistently seen in the PM, but more does than bucks in the food source
Morning by far. I dread shooting anything in the evening.
I edited your post to reflect conditions on Wednesday evening
As to the OPs inquiry i am personally about 50/50 over the last 40 years with a mix of both does and bucks, small and large and the last deer (#92 for me personally - so decent sample size) taken last Thursday with the crossbow on a nice sunny afternoon at 3 pm.
I think one is as good as the other one,as long as you can be -confident,confortable and alert.
We got 4 bucks this year. 3 were before 8am. I got my 10 pointer at 3:45pm in the pouring rain and 50k winds
I seen another big buck at 9:30am the next day but didn't get a shot.
Out of the last 6 bucks I've shot, 4 were 3pm or later
probably 90% of my deer are AM shot within 3 hours of legal. I really don't like evening hunts for the reasons above, tracking and prepping. Only PM hunts are late season when I'm getting desperate to fill a tag, but those have all ended well.
This season all our deer were shot in the a.m in the first hour after legal.
Afternoon hunts were not productive at all..m
From all the comments, timing may just be a local thing. One of our crew was out at first light this AM and arrowed a Coyote. So far,it's all he's seen.
I like morning hunts better than evening hunts by far, with that said, I go when I can
Our group at Burks Falls have taken 80% in the PM, including our two this year. That being said my group on Manitoulin Island is just the opposite
I’ve shot 54 deer in my life in a variety of places in Canada and US. I would say 45 of those deer have come in the morning and 3/4 of those deer were within 30min either side of 9am. Have never shot a deer at first lite and only a handful at dusk. 10am til 2pm has been good to me during peak rut over the years too
1st deer 2014: 9 am. (Doe)
2nd 2016: 9:30 am (6 point)
3rd 2017: 4:30pm. (7 point)
4th 2018: 5:30pm. (Doe)
5th 2019: 5:35pm. (Button buck)
6th 2023: 7:00am. (Big 10point)
Well, looks like I cannot fight sleeping in anymore.
General consensus - AM has a slight edge with more sightings/ harvest
This year I saw 4 bucks on Monday morning. Actually I won't even saw morning.
First one 7am
Second one 9am
Third one 10am
Fourth one was at 1130am.
I don't think it matters much for them. I think it's more where you catch them walking.
In the mornings they'll usually be heading back to their bedding areas.
Evenings they're usually heading from their bedding areas to feeding areas.
But hey I'm not a deer. Who the hell knows what these animals do. You have no idea how surprised I was to see a buck every hour and a half on Monday. By far the biggest buck I seen was the one who popped out at 1130am.and I onky seen its face and antlers in the distance.
So either they were really late going back to bed or they were just rubbing their trees, that's why it's called hunting I guess !
