New Truck or Fix the Old One?

So currently i own a 2016 one-ton (3500) SRW silverado diesel. I have owned it since new and drove it off the lot 7 years ago taxes, fees etc all in on the road for $53K. The cost to replace the truck now like for like is $120K+. It is a company truck (i own the company) and used regularly to tow 18 or 19k.

The truck is stock and now has 529k on the odometer. Engine has never needed any work other than one sensor. Still running on the factory injectors and still has good compression and still lots of snap. Transmission is also stock and never been touched. Front end and rear end are also stock and never been touched. Had to replace the ceramic DPF elements about 6 months ago but other than that no real grief from the emissions either. Other than that only fluids, filters, tires and 2 brake jobs.

Now the issue - Head gasket is starting to leak internally (using 1 litre of coolant every 10 days), needs new tires and while at might as well replace whatever else looks worn once we take the head off. Between all that i can realistically believe it will be $10K or more. With the mileage on it i am hesitant to spend that as i feel like it is now at the stage where something is gonna start going every 2 months. The money is one thing but more importantly the potential future downtime would also be an issue but a hard one to quantify.

Really don't want to drop a 120K but also don't want to pour good money after bad. Thoughts?

Joe, I believe there comes a time when it’s cheaper to replace than to repair.. Have you looked into a two year lease instead of laying out all that hard earned cash for a new one. I’m pretty much in the same situation as you. Driving a 2013 GMC with a couple hundred clicks away from the 2000000 mark. Just spent 1500.$ on her. Like you the vehicle I’m looking at is $110,000.00 plus taxes…

Its a odd state of affairs right now. Trade in values are at an all time high which may tip the scales in buying new and having another 7-8 years of trouble free driving. Was toying with the same concern with the Jeep I have and if there was a similar new 2023 on the lot would of flipped the old for the new.

I would like to lease but I put 70-80k on every year. Hard to make a lease work driving that many miles.

Trade on diesels is usually good but 529,000 is pretty high mileage for a trade.

I think your in a damed if you do and damed if you don’t situation. Either pay now to fix it or pay later for new, sooner or later either way your going to pay. Know one knows how long a vehicle will last. But considering how much a new one is, 10k is a chance I would take if it last you another 4 years might be worth it. Good luck either way

Holy crap,dude,it owes you nothing,you owe it everything after that kind of performance. A new Silverado diesel 3500 will set you back $120K. Leasing isn't an option unless you have a business where you can write off expenses. If the truck body and transmission are still good,yank the engine,buy a new one and swap it out. If the whole truck is in rough shape,buy a new one. Dealers are hurting right now and good deals can be had if you know what you're doing.

It is owned by the business (company i own and is virtually 100% tax write off). I would lease but because i put on 70 to 80 k a year it becomes problematic and not really any cheaper than just buying it outright. Buying outright there are still decent tax savings to be had as i get all the HST back and it is a depreciating asset on the books.

For maintenance - Yeah I just changed all fluids and filters according to specified schedule did the brakes once and a while, tires every 80 or 90 k and she just kept on ticking. The other thing that is crazy is that a lot of miles were fully loaded and pulling a mini excavator on a float at 18,000 or 19,000 lbs trailer weight. The one thing that did work to my advantage though is almost 0 city miles. Vast majority was 2 lane rural with a small bit of 400 series mixed in.

Body is fine and good for another 4 or 5 years. Some very light surface rust on some dings that of course happened in the first 6 months of its life. I tried one of those sacrificial anode based electronic corrosion control devices on this truck and i would say it worked well. There is a spot on the hood (courtesy of a wild turkey) where there has been exposed base metal for 6 years and it is rust free. Also exposed base metal at the driver's side rear wheel well for 6 years and it is only very lightly rusted.

Transmission seems fine and filters and fluid done regularly but with 529k on it who knows. Another thing that concerns me is the injectors - 529k on them - if they go that is another $10k and based on what i have read online Christ himself must have been working the injector line the day mine were made as almost nobody gets that many miles out of the factory injectors. I checked into a new engine and to get a new Duramax shipped here from Ohio and installed looking at +/- $45k.

Actually maybe what i should do is sell the mini-ex, rubber tire tractor loader backhoe and float (but business aside they are damn useful at the cottage and the hunt camp). Than all i need is a Taco (easily paid for by the sale of afore mentioned items) to pull my sleds and the side by side. Would have to get used to not putting 4,000 lbs in the box as well but it could work. Also wouldn't have to pay annually for those stupid yellow stickers or get %^&#'d on my ownership renewal every year.

Okay now the Friday night whiskey is kicking in and i am now ready to not only sell the equipment but &^$# it - let's sell the whole damn business. Have a standing 7 figure offer from a competitor that is desperate to get my municipal contracts. Was planning to wait a few more years but i ain't getting any younger and the lake is calling. Do that and then buy a retro fully resto-mod 60s Toyota FJ from the 60s and then just beat the living crap out of it hauling the sleds and the zodiac around in the back country. Wife can sit and watch for messages from the SPOTX to see if i am still alive.

With talk like that wouldn't it be better to buy new depreciate the hell out of it over the next couple few years than sell it to yourself while selling the business? In the end have a relatively new truck and cash in hand to live the good life.

i think fin has the right answer there. I wouldn't put any money into an engine that has had coolant in it, that real hard on engine parts and by the time you replace all the parts might as well buy new truck. I had head gasket go on new truck years ago, didn't drive it more than a mile. Dealership did all the work under warranty. Engine lasted me about 80K km before it blow, out of warrant of course.

Apologies for the rant in my last post. Just getting weary and one too many whiskey Fri night.

Got the mechanic looking at it next week but suspect I will likely replace it. Toying with downsizing the truck and subing out equipment floating needs. Savings on stickers, renewals, inspections, maintenance and fuel would likely go a long ways to covering the costs and the balance could just be worked in to job prices

Sadly...you could literally change the engine and tranny and what-ever else it needs for a hell of a lot less than 120k.

I'm currently leasing a 2021 RAM Warlock. Return date for me is July 2024. If my lease ended today, I will be paying more than double for the same truck with only a 12,000k yearly KM allowance :(ugggg!.

If things don't change with the Lease rates and terms I'm tapping out of leasing and will buy it out for the $35,000.00 residual value! :)

that the problem with leasing, the mileage. every new vehicle I have bought the dealership tries to get me to jump for the lease. Sounds like a great idea until you get to the mileage talk. I put 20K at year on my jeep on average.

I don't get the reasoning for a 9.79% leasing interest rate, a meager 12,000km allowance and a too long 5 year term. I am hoping sales for them completely tank and they get a reality check. Money talks and if they have no sales maybe they will wake up and come down to earth! lol

Brother has a 2005 3500 diesel dually that he wants to get 2 years out of yet before he retires it. Doesn't do as heavy a workload as it used to when he was still farming but has been to NFLD for moose and the last 2 years to Alberta for mulie and elk. He keeps a 10 year old F150 for putting around. Figures in 2 years it'll owe him nothing. Lol

I think soon we should see Truck prices and finance interest rates back to normal or even lower.

Don't worry about stellantis we have their backs. We are building their empire and they will create our jobs. They partnered with the partnerships for cushy tax slush funds paid by us. Like their products or not the government does. Funny how 2/3 thirds of the money went to the you'll own nothing groups. But it's to biuld our economy we will all benefit from from it right ?

Keep on fishing if your in a good position to do so. Don't expect prices to drop to fast so prolonging it could only cost you more.

If you wait a year or so and get a truck now have the company pay it off and keep it out of the sale. Hopefully you'll getting a few years of trouble free hassle. Buy the sounds of it it's a quick decision . Take the year or 2 to better your future position from the company benefits then retire. If your already there then enjoy it while you can.

Funny you should say that I was talking to my BIL while in Arthur this weekend. Told me a horror story of a neighbour who purchased a Longhorn top of the line model. That baby broke down with 87kms on the clock, apparently numerous parts missing like wireharnesses and so forth. So bad they gave the guy a new truck, he had that a few days and his tranny kind of fell out of the truck, not bolted in properly but I think he had actually got over 100klms on that one. LOL Could it be this bad.

It's hard to imagine. I remember seeing a new Impala in the audit garage at GM that had the wrong main wiring master body harness installed. When the techs did the run-up,lights came on with the windshield washer switch and the seats moved with the light switch. Actually,it was quite hilarious until upper management showed up. That car never left the plant (nor did any other that had a major defect),but,some of the operators that failed miserably sure did.

Knock on wood I have had good luck with GM HD Duramax trucks.

Worst truck I ever owned was actually a Nissan Titan - what a POS. One thing after another. When it worked (which was rare) though it did drive nice.

Not sure WTF as i topped coolant 1600 km ago and now it seems to be holding. That 1600 km included 700k towing the snowmobile trailer and 700k towing 19,000 lbs with the float and rubber tire backhoe. Inclined now to let it ride.

With mileage like that, you know the dealership will leave you with a very sore rectum and next to nothing for trade-in. I'd personally run it into the ground, max-out your investment in it, until it dies. I just went through this when buying a new 2023 Tundra. My old 2010 Tundra was still rock solid with 280,000km on it. The best any dealership would give me for a trade was $5800. It was so ridiculous I started laughing and the saleman got all pissy when I told him to smell me later. I kept the truck, put $300 in to it to fix the fender rust, undercoated it, dropped my insurance to liability only (is only $290 per year now to insure) and bought a new stainless tail pipe for $330. It's my beater rig and I now only use it for trapping and fishing. I've driven it another 30,000km with just oil changes, air filter, and brake service. The new $65k Tundra sits in the driveway and only has 6300km on it at 13 months. I'll drive the old truck until it dies.

do you know where the coolant was leaking? were you finding some underneath the vehicle when parked?
last thing you want is coolant mixing with the oil and turning it into sludge... sometimes they can leak thru the EGR cooler..
it sounds like youre on top of it, but stay vigilant on this so you dont harm the engine.

That coolant has to be going somewhere. It just doesn't suddenly go away and leaks don't fix themselves. Crawl underneath and crack the oil pan drain plug. If there's coolant in the oil,you'll see it right away. It'll look like a milkshake.

I had a 1998 sierra - when it was about 3 years old started leaking coolant into the cylinder combustion chamber. No leak on the outside of the engine. No coolant in the oil. But it would blow a bit of white exhaust on startup.

Well verdict is in. Very small leak at back of right side head gasket. Going to get a quote and then make the call.

GM had a lot of smaller engines with bad head gaskets in the late 90's and early 2000's. Most were in the smaller Chev and Pontiac engines that were all repaired under warranty recall. Later in the late 2000-2010 time frame,mismilled engine heads on small V6 and V8 engines caused leaks,too,because the didn't meet up with the blocks. Rather than get dealers to pull the heads and remill them,they simply issued a silent recall and replaced hundreds of engines on the QT. Luckily for them,product ID was quite accurate during the assembly process. It was quite easy to identify the problem product runs. From there,they knew which dealerships the vehicles were shipped to and from there,who the customers were that needed to be contacted.

Well it's official. Got the quote and not going to repair the old girl - 40 hours labour plus parts etc... - involves removing the cab for &*^%'s sake - what kinda design is that? Just getting the commercial safety done and then gonna drive her and keep adding coolant and changing oil as needed until she seizes, grenades, whatever - with over 531k now trade value is basically irrelevant. Gonna try adding Risolone head gasket leak seal to the coolant and see what that does but officially on the hunt for a new vehicle. Coolant is not getting into the oil so at least that is a good thing.

Plus that many km on the factory injectors, plus factory front and rear end still in service - just a matter of time and probably not much time.

Mother of the baby Jesus! I just watched this and almost vomited. I now see where the 40+ hours of labour come from. That's a major job just to get at the heads ! Reminds me of the 1970',s Monza I owned . In order to change the spark plugs on the car, you had to undo the motor mounts and use an engine hoist to lift the engine out !
I hope you didn't ruin a perfectly good pair of gitch when the mechanic gave you the quote!

At $90/hour just for labor plus the price of a new or even reconditioned engine,costs will be close to $20K including taxes. There's really no guarantees,either. That's enough to set old folks to f..........havin' sex.

Most shops charge $150.00/hr now. Yikes!

I used to own a 2010 F250 with the 6.2L engine. It was lightly driven as I bought it to tow our travel trailer 3-4 times per year. Unfortunately for me, one of the head gaskets went in 2020 and it cost $10k + to repair (I can’t remember the exact figure). The shop had to lift the cab off the frame to carry out the repair. That truck was a lemon.

Something is terribly wrong in the world of mechanical design and engineering when a pickup truck has to be half dismantled before you can change a bloody head gasket. I once had a 1980 Ford F100 with the inline 300 in it. I was a mechanical idiot, but armed with a Haynes book and a rented torque wrench, it only took me just over an hour to do the job. I popped the hood and sat in the engine well. A few bolts and a $60 Crap Tire gasket kit and it was done. What's the deal with gas pickups? Does this cab removal crap have to be done on a newer non-diesel as well?

It's the disposable instant gratification culture we live in. The engineers know that very few people will put that many km on a vehicle before they want a new one to stay flashy and current - it's like iphones. Because of that they don't care. The gasket will last long enough for most everyone else so why worry about getting at it to replace it.

That's partly the issue. The rest of it comes down to the streamlined assembly process. Engine powertrains are assembled completely with the entire chassis. Truck bodies are built complete in the body and trim plants. They're sent to final assembly where both completed units are dropped onto each other (called chassis marriage). Components are plugged into onboard electronic grids, suspension systems are bolted together,fluids are added and about two hours later after run-up,an operator hops in,hits the key and drives it off the line. Repairs are an after thought,if at all.

Good evening, haven't chimed in here in quite a while but,,,, my 05 Duramax had a bad head gasket. Outrageous dollars to repair. My buddy recommended a product called "Irontite Thoroflush " to cleanse the cooling system then a bottle of "Irontite Head Gasket Sealer". Best $100.00 (at the time) that I put into that Dirtymax. Put over 200,000km after the procedure. Only other thing is to bypass the heater core till a bit after the engine has run a bit. Just follow the instructions.

Thanks for posting. I am going to try this or a similar product and roll with it. I have a memory and i think it was you and we met at Boofest maybe 8 to 10 years ago? Don had recently finished building the shop at his new place out around Newcastle. I was the guy with the pneumatic potato cannon with the 1/2 mile range. You were there with maybe one of two of your sons and if i recall right you were living in or around Fenelon Falls at the time. I could be wrong though as i know i drank more than a bit of 16 year old Lagavullin that weekend.

I be that guy yup. Sure miss Boofest and the crew that attended. I still come to this site every now and then for a little looksee. Lost interest in posting here quite a while back with the all negativity and arguing going on.

I wonder with the rates the way they are and people losing homes if you could capitalize on someone who bought too much truck for a decent price.

You sir are consistent to a tee. LOL. Perhaps as consistent as my penchant for good whisky. On a note related to the OP - put the wonder juice in the coolant and have done about 700k since with no coolant loss. Gonna kick it up a notch this weekend and tow 700k and see what that does.

So latest update. Truck is still running and not burning any coolant - good thing. Truck now has 541K on it. My spidy sense is tingling and telling me to trade it - no check engine lights currently and no codes on the reader. Went into the dealer today and they offered me 10K trade on it. Long and short - we made a deal.

New 2024 HD diesel ZR2 on the way. I hemmed and hawed but ultimately i can afford it so F it. This will be my last HD truck before i retire so figured at this stage of life why not and F Trudope and his carbon tax. Good on ya enjoy the new truck.

We won't be joining the bandwagon anytime soon. Older v8 big body cars for us. Some golf carts are bigger than my kids car lol. 3 bags of groceries in the trunk or behind the back seat will fill it. Our car we can get a 2x4 8fter inside it or a 4x4 sheet of ply in the trunk.

What the truck is with the interest rate and prices these days!! :(

I am in a 2021 Ram lease with ultra-low interest rate and payment. I am pretty much screwed when I go and turn it in in July. My payment will be more than double! funny my income didn't double... lol

I think I will buy it out and tell the stealer ship to go pound salt... lol

I’m trying to imagine the condition your rectum is going to be in as you hand over the cheque to the salesman. I used a blow up invalid ring when I drove home after getting my 2023 Tundra . An old innertube will work as well. It stops throbbing after about three months.

Heated seats help with the rectum. Picked it up Thursday afternoon. Don't use cheques anymore as a bank draft is cheaper. Helps that it is a corporate company truck so pre-tax money and no HST which in the big picture is about 50% savings compared to an individual buying one with after tax $$$ plus HST - well actually you pay the HST up front but you get it all back when the corporate quarterly HST return is filed - Next return is due May 31 so they have the HST until then.

Great looking truck.

I'm currently driving a 2021 Ram Warlock with the 5.7 hemi engine. Great truck but the 18L/100k average fuel economy absolutely sucks with these gas prices. My next truck will be a Chevy Colorado with the 2.7litre turbo engine. My Ram lease is up in July, and I can't wait to dump it. The Colorado will do everything I need it to do for a lot less fuel. :)

Ram will take a huge beating in sales with their gas sucking pig trucks. Even the V6 Ram isn't any better than the hemi because I owned one before getting the hemi... lol

No more Ram trucks for me. They have priced me out of ownership. Lol chevy is killing it!
