pigeon hunting what gives?

Use to be if you wanted to shoot pigeons all you had to do was sit behind the barn and pop 'em as they fly around. If you wanted a sure thing some decoys and spinning wings would have them hoover over them all day. Finally got timing right to try a bit of pigeon hunting friday morning. Got to the farm chucked out some decoys 2 baby mojos and a dove decoy for good measure dumped some grain around and settled in for some good times. The first came in as usual and got dropped . Shortly a few came by and I whiffed after that everything disappeared. Some flocks that flew over where sky high and not the normal flocks that buzz the cut corn. What gives?

Mcdonald's fries are way to expensive a commodity now to waste. And my girls would never let them go to waste, I sadly tend to have to give mine away to them. Maybe try some day old timbits

They are on pigoen control. They say it works and are seeing less birds.

Based on my less than successful efforts so far at trapping pigeons, I’m convinced that country pigeons are smarter, or perhaps less desperate, than city pigeons.

Wrong type of decoy ? You need "The Old Man on a Park Bench" decoy !

They have gotten smarter!!!!! They fly by, you shoot and they gone! Over to next farm they go!

I sit in the barn with a pcp air rifle. I usually manage to pop six or seven then they fly the roost. If I stay in the barn for another hour I'll usually pop another 4 or 5 when the stragglers come back to the barn. They are fantastic eating. I breast them, pound the breast out with a meat mallet, then egg wash and bread them (Italian breadcrumbs) and pan fry them for pigeon parmesan. Two breasts on a bed of fettucine is a lovely meal. A lot of hunters don't realize what they're missing! I'd take pigeon over Mourning Dove. My black pig-dog likes the leg hams!

I never found a good place to hunt pigeons in Ontario.
Definitely a "private property with a barn" type of hunt I guess.

Yes it is. With todays cleaner farms most pigeons get poisoned before they get to huntable populations. In menonite country they usually get trapped and sold at the farmers market. There are still some feed lot farms esp pig farms that have some hanging around.

Another problem is that there are a lot of stupid people out there. Pigeons are a menace and farmers hate them, but when you have idiots shooting up barns and silos for a pigeon the problems start. I have heard many stories of guys going into barns and blasting the pigeons out, and you wonder people are hesitant to give permission. On one of my permissions there is nice sizeable population of pigeons. I asked the landowner if they were pets (LOL!). His reply was I like to see them gone! So I asked... and believe me when I tell you the look he gave me. He was not crazy about the idea of shooting near the barns. I explained to him how the hunt would be conducted. He gave me the ok. Ill wait till after turkey season and then i'll let the games begin.
