Maxi Ball .430 Gr
100-120 gr FFFG Pyrodex powder
Plan on going out to100-150 yard shots.
Anyone here take down a moose with similar setup? Im trying to figure out yay's and nay's before heading out to the field in October if I can get it dialed in nicely.
Why would we , we all have Rifles large calibers.
You should be fine with the load what you plan to develop.
I do not think there is anything to "consider".
Moose was taken centuries with similar gear.
BIG thing you need to worry though is-accuracy AND range.
If you group well,you should be golden.
BUT-BUT,i belive 150 yard is a tall order for that gun.

I suggest you practice with different loads of FFF and FF, my 50 cal round ball is accurate up to a certain load but go over that and it sprays bullets all over. At 85 grains of 3f it reaches its max accuracy, at 100 grains the grouping is lost, my 58 likes 2F the best with minie balls, those are my guns and yours will be different. For me 80 yrds would be the max due to the rainbow trajectory of the slow moving RB projectile, there is a book written by Sam Fadala called 'The Black Powder Handbook', its well worth the read.
Or purchase a modern inline muzzle loader is what I would do... :)
I have one. Its pretty much the same as a rifle in the fact its scoped, shoots jacketed bullets and can reach out to 200 yards if ya want. The difference is the loading. I can get a second shot down the barrel quite quickly in it.Quote:

Therefore-even if one is accurate enough to take a fair shot at 150 yards with a muzzleloader-open sight to boot,there should be serious consideration to :bullet placement ,exposure of vitals AND animal behavior at the shot.

Better take 50 extra steps (moose or the hunter)and make sure,then have a wounded game ,nowhere to be found.
I went out and practised, tried loads and I am not confident in anything over 50 Yards, I will hang the .54 up for now and get more range time in.
There could be other reasons your not getting the grouping you want after using different loads. You could try different size patches. A common thing I see on the range is bouncing the rod to get a solid seat - another approach is to use gentle consistent pressure until it seats only, no bouncing the rod on the seated bullet. Run a swab through every 2-3 rounds to remove the carbon ring inside the barrel.
I kept it all consistent, Same bullet, same powder load and seating of the bullet, No patch as not needed. I do not tamp the bullet by bouncing the rod ontop.
Just a guess, but my .58 calibre likes 2F powder and minie balls but not round ball and patch, on 3F it is not quite as consistent but huntable, it is a parker hale reproduction of an 1858 made on the same tooling as the original and the bore is slightly conical (as felt when cleaning), my Spanish made .50 cal likes 3F and round ball and patch and the bore is straight. Not sure this applies to your situation but I only learned this through trial and error.Quote:

I was staying away from the round ball for moose. I will fart around with it using 2F and start @ 80 gr -50 yard and see how consistent it is and work my way up.
I have a bunch of BP's and will be removing butt plate to put the best load info on each one when I get to them all. I know one of my 50 percussions shoots great with round ball up to 80 yards and use that one fer deer.
