Saturdays Hunt
Been a really tough season, way to many coyotes around Pretty much every day I get pictures of them on my cameras. Been out 11 times now yesterday was only the second time I have seen a deer. About 730 I saw a coyote about 50yds. At 8 I see a deer walking past me about 30yds up wind of me. when it went behind a big tree I got xbow up and ready. way to many saplings in way for any shot. It walks to the trail I'm covering and turns my way. At 22yds it stops so it time to pull trigger. I hit it exactly where I was aiming off it goes, runs for 40yds than starts to walk which I figure is a good thing. Goes out of view so I get up from my ground blind and head for my vehicle and quad and of course my dog. I come back to where I shot it and no blood but there was hair. Dog picks up trail and off we go. after 200yds I'm wondering what's up as there is blood drops but not a lot and figured I should have found it by now. it went another 400yds before we found it. apparently it must have turned towards me as I shot as bolt went in where I was aiming but came out other side about 1.5ft back and high. High is expected as I'm low to ground. So it got one lung and nicked the liver. I was really glad Sam (dog) was on the job, this is her 7th deer she has recovered for me.

Early for me to calculate but finally get my brain to settle on and imagine 6 football fields through the woods. WTG Sam (the dog).

At this point all I can do is laugh becasue my entire season has been a cruel joke on me... lol
Not giving up until Dec 31st end of legal shooting time. :)

Good work on finding the deer.

Awesome! Congrats! That's a good distance. Was there any blood trail to follow or was it all Sam's nose that got you to her?
-
blood spots here and there. I pretty much just followed Sam and looked for blood to make sure I was going the correct way.

it's amazing what a good lab can do
my senior guy is amazing at finding deer, my junior guy is absolutely useless looking for deer
-
Congrats on finding the deer quite a long way, good thing you had your dog with you
-
Congrats to you and the dog

At times we don’t give the dogs enough credit and praise for what they can do and accomplish… Nice work for you on spending the time to train him to do just that and awesome work for Sam doing what you trained him to do . Congrats to the both of you!

Bo D, I have to be honest here I had nothing to do with her being a great tracker, she learned it all on her own. I have always brought her with me in the jeep, when I get a deer I go get her. She has made 3 recoveries of over 500yds. Her 1st retrieve was when she was 10months old, I had no idea if she would track or not. I stuck a nice Doe, actually in the same ground blind as this one. It was mid October so leaves still on trees. I saw it run for maybe 50yds then lost sight of it. I did hear it crash out in front of me so new it was down. there was no sigh of a hit, but it didn't matter to Sam, I tried to send her up the deer trail, but she wanted to go into a different spot so I followed her. She was going in the correct direction so I followed. About where I last seen it she found a pool of blood, carried on for maybe 25yds more and she found it. So this is all on her. I take her every time I shoot a deer even if I see it fall, so she gets the experience. Funny last year was one of the ones I would have had no problems finding. there were 2 coyotes chasing it, if I had reloaded the Xbow I would have gotten one of them. Anyway I went and got quad and Sam. She found deer without issue even though it back tracked itself. I had to drag it a bit to field dress it. Sam was watching me, then all of a sudden she started to growl and look back. Figured the coyotes where following us. She never left the side of the deer and watched the whole time with fur up. It was her deer. Got to give the dogs all the credit, they all do a great job.
