Flintlock Season

Well we had a good and interesting deer rifle season - hunted with a son and two grandsons - got 5 doe and the one grandson hit a buck but we couldn't find it - now one of the kids want to go hunting with a flintlock - that's what he wants for Christmas - the flintlock season runs from December 26 to January 20 - you can get a buck and doe depending how many doe licenses you have - usually there is snow on the ground at that time of the year and it makes a hunt pretty neat - archery season also extends from 12/26 to 1/20 - just hope that CWD doesn't move into our area - would really ruin the hunting -

I had 3 doe licenses and a buck license - if a guy wants he can get 6 doe licenses and a buck license- there are places where there are too many deer - farmers are given permission to shoot them because of crop damage - lot of meat in the freezer -

I would like to see a youth season in Canada which extends past (or before) the general season(s). Short seasons create a larger volume of hunters in the woods increasing the possibility of hunter conflict.

Always had mixed feels about youth seasons. Ya on one hand seems like a good thing to encourage new hunters but on the other in a sense may give an unfair advantage which hunting rules and regulation endeavor to put hunters on an even footing.

Well the grandson got his wish for Christmas - he got a flintlock rifle and all the things that go with one - I never paid much attention to these things but when I learned that the grandson wanted one I viewed a lot of videos showing how they work and many videos made by guys hunting in the snow with them - my son - grandson and I went in the woods to try this thing out - pretty neat the way it works - we took a lot of shots with the thing aiming at a target - after watching the hunting videos I kinda came to a conclusion that - people are going to get frustrated when you aim at a big buck and the thing doesn't do off - it is not that accurate compared to a scoped rifle - a lot of deer are going to get wounded and not found because the ball isn't going to have the impact that a rifle bullet has - I can see where it is a lot of fun hunting with one - the season begins tomorrow and lasts to January 20 - we will see what happens - the hunting fraternity sure has it's range - some guys hunt with these old time guns while where are others pushing for AR15 type guns for deer hunting - so glad that I live in the US. instead of Canada - we have our 2nd amendment and the right to have guns where you guys are loosing this right more and more every day -

We do not have a second amendment therefore we are not losing this right every day as we did not have it in the first place.

I guess time will tell if you will be so grateful to have this right, for instance when another civil war might erupt in America. It seems some folks are still not happy about the results of the first one and want a replay.

Some where along the way in the upcoming future with you newly elected leader The Donald wanting to invade Greenland, Panama and Canada all at the same time, you might actually need your guns.

We pretty much all have all our regular hunting rifles up here, semi auto, bolt action, lever you name it. We have very restricted access to handguns and this has been in place for many years.

What the Liberal Government has attempted to do is take out of the hands of civilians, assault style rifles which can fire multiple rounds and fully automatic firearms.

So you would be very familiar with them as they are the type of guns used in Mass School Shootings that you see on an almost daily basis in the USA.

They are also the type of guns going down THE IRON RIVER to Mexico, sold by your manufacturers that are used by the drug gangs and are responsible for mass murders.

ITS BASICALLY THAT SIMPLE.

Coming on here and talking about pellet guns is all we are going to have is wrong.

Even in Australia where they had a few mass shootings and then restrictions, you can still get any hunting style gun you need.

I know there are WEEKEND WARRIORS and so called Sports Shooters in both the USA and Canada that would like to blast away at paper targets and have fun, I know a few people like this,
but Governments have to act for the entire population of a country and what makes people feel insecure.

We have had whole elections up here where the Liberals won the election because they said they would take steps to prevent civilians having access to these guns and won the election on that.

We have had Conservative Governments that won elections going the opposite way, just Like democrats and Republicans.

I hunt with a Marlin model 336 - it can hold 6 shells in the tube and 1 in the chamber - this gun is illegal in Canada according to the latest gun laws which limits a gun to hold 5 shells - putting a dummy round is not allowed - a permanent fix is required- there is no question that your government is anti gun and if it had its way you would be completely gun free - just look at what happens to countries where guns have been banned or overly restricted- a bad leader takes over and the people can't do anything about it- the Jews in Nazi Germany found that out - but they didn't learn - and when Oct 7 accorded the people in Israel were unarmed and couldn't defend themselves- one final point - don't ever think that things like this can't happen in your own country all it takes is some natural disaster or upheaval to give someone that opportunity - an armed citizenry is a free citizenry - remember that -

Joe, it's autoloaders that are restricted to five rounds and have been for a couple decades. Not lever or bolt rifles.

I can attest that flintlocks are a lot of fun.
This is my 60th birthday gift to myself. Tons of fun and shoots like a hot damn!

I know they resisted the change; had to be flintlock, round ball rifle, hence Thompson Center's "Pennsylvania Hunter" rifle.
I actually thought that was a good idea, to keep the challenge in the hunt.

Actually we have two different seasons - one for muzzle loaders which use a cap to fire off the charge - you can actually put a scope on these - then during the late season only flintlocks can be used - that's what is going on now -

In response to an earlier post - are you sure that only automatic weapons are covered in the 5 shell maximum capacity - I was watching some Canadian guy holding a Marlin lever action rifle and saying that it is illegal to have - maybe he was referring to a new law being proposed - not sure

If your a deer hunter you can start hunting in September in archery season - then muzzleloader season - then rifle season - then flintlock and archery ending in January 20 - 4 months of hunting - should have some deer meat in the freezer with all that time to hunt

Gilroy , good try on this but methinks you are wasting your breath.. I fear that JoPa, like a lot of his fellow Americans believe anything they see on YouTube etc and then base all their political decisions on those so called "truths". This is what I fear about the U.S. Of A. and their crazy new leader and what he spouts on the not so aptly named "Truth Social" Do not give up though as I enjoy reading your well thought out and well written posts. As for JoPa I do not want you to give up either. Let me explain something - the reason many Americans like to carry a weapon is because there is so much violence- our population is made up of all types of people and many come from countries that all messed up- now if you can get rid of these people and violent crime disappeared we would like to stop worrying about our safety - our countries are different because of the makeup of our populations - taking guns away from law abiding citizens is not the answer- the bad guys will still get guns - this leaves the good guy without any defense - you Canadians because of your small population size are protected from much of what goes on in the rest of the world - if you can guarantee me that no bad guy can get a gun then I would gladly give up my gun -

Then comes the question why did our founders find it necessary to put into our constitution the 2nd amendment - they had the wisdom and foresight to realize that a governments can go bad and it may be necessary to take up arms against such a government - there is plenty of evidence that this can and has happened- remember the old saying- the best defense against a bad guy is a good guy with a gun -

The majority of Americans are looking for someone who will clean house in Washington and for what has transpired so far Trump seems to be the man to do it - I think he is the right man for the job - in the meantime put some thought into what you will do when Canada becomes part of the US of A -

Reply. Our population in Canada is much more diverse than America, we do have gun violence but proportionally much more less than the USA. That's because we have less guns especially handguns.
The good guys in the USA get the same defense as we do in Canada its called POLICE SERVICES. We have large diverse populations in cities like Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal but we still have less crime than most USA cities of comparable size. That's because we have less guns.

Reply. The reason why your founders found it necessary to put in constitution this wording and this wording ONLY " well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

If you have read your history you would know you were in a war with the mother land Great Britain ,colonialists had become traitors to the King and wanted their own sovereign nation.
They did not intend that citizens should run around with guns and have at it with each other every time they had a dispute (Civil War) in your case or a neighbor dispute.

The best defense against a so called bad guy is a fully armed and trained Police officer, preferably in a country that does not allow citizens to all be armed.

You know like most other NORMAL countries in the civilized world, they do not live in constant fear of neighbors and everybody else they see.

Thanks for your thoughts Gilroy - quite lengthy but let me address just one comment - that's police protection- when riots occurred in our cities the police were useless - people were left on their own to protect themselves - we had a school shooting going on and the cops stood outside keeping anyone from going in - the most stated concern of police officers is officer safety- most often the cops come after the crime has been committed- they rarely stop crime from occurring - a lot of people don't know it but the police do not have the duty to protect anyone - this has been established from court cases where people tried to sue because the police didn't protect them - when it comes to protecting yourself and or your family you are on your own -

Then we have the make up differences of our countries - we have a lot more people who come from broken homes or families without fathers who are prong to violence - the prison population will tell you this story - each year millions of situations occur where just the presence of a gun by a law biding citizen prevents a crime from occurring- finally let me close with one thought - if you think that your country is going to escape the violence you are fooling yourself - it's just a matter of time

My experience with youth seasons in other places, now I have never participated and I am from Ontario (just talking to others who live in areas where they have a youth season), is it sure seems like a great way for dad to get out (he does all the preparation with stands, cameras, bait, etc.) with the kids and help them get a deer.
Sometimes the kids help preseason and sometimes it’s someone else’s kids. If we have the resources I am in for a youth rifle season before the regular rifle season. I will just have to find some youths to help get a deer 😉.
