2025 gardens what are you growing?

Finally started most of the seeds that need to be started early. I'll start off some lettuce leaf and romaine in a few weeks along with the swiss card and some kale.

So currently I'm trying to germinate
For peppers
9 jalapeños
6 red
6 green
6 sweet banana
3 hot Hungarian

Tomatoes
6 beefsteak
6 bushsteak
6 Roma

Others
6 broccoli
6 Brussel spouts

Will be getting a few nets this year to protect the vegetables that the bug's usually get to and keep the cabbage moth off them. Usually I don't grow them if they are to susceptible but I'll invest in some netting.

As always I'll be expanding another 11 ft by 15 or 20ft to one of the 3 beds . We built a new shed last year so Im putting a herb bed in front of it.

Potatoes? I got the starter potatoes last year but they are expensive. Going to try and pick up a few bags within the week and sprout them in the garage window. Red and another kind maybe yellow.

Going to see if the nursery that I use will find me some of the purple potatoes as well.

Any problems with starting your own potatoes from the grocery store?

Last year I did a mix of seed potatoes and grocery store potatoes I left out to sprout. They all produced good harvest of white and red potatoes.

if you got extra broccoli plants I'll take 'em

It's been years since I have put in a vegetable garden.

I did plant 3 Haskap plants and 5 Blueberry plants and they will be 3 years old this year.
Last year I also planted 2 blackberry (Boysenberry) vines.

All should take off this year. The blueberry plants were set back one season because I accidentally gave them to much Aluminum Sulphate burning them, I had to reduce the soil PH quite a bit but forgot that I already had sprinkle some the week before when it was raining..

If I do put a vegetable garden this year, I am going to try a straw bale garden.
I will probably use 6 bales.

I will probably plant String beans, Carrots, Lettuce, spinach, onions, Mellon and 1 or two squash.

I also plan to get some Sunchoke tubers from a friend of mine.

Two weeks ago I started my peppers, both hot and sweet varieties. They have only just started sprouting. I keep them inside a grow room I built in the basement.

At that same time I started asparagus, beets, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, leeks, lettuces, and spinach.

Onions were started back in February.

Everything has sprouted and is showing good growth. As of last week I placed all the cool hardy plants in my cold frames outside. It's dropped down to minus 7 a couple of nights and it hasn't bothered the plants at all.

I'll probably start my tomatoes and eggplant in the next week, and probably another batch of lettuces.

If this nice weather keeps up, I'll have the peas planted outside also.

It's that busy time. The orchard has been pruned same as the vineyard. The higher levels of snow allowed the bunnies to chew up more than they usually do. Raspberries took a good hit. I'm slowly cleaning up as I go.

In the flower garden I've noticed that the snow drops have bloomed, the daffodils are 2 inches tall already. It's nice to see things moving along.

Unfortunately all 6 are worked into the plans already.

I started exactly what I needed putting multiple seeds in each tray for maximum success. Whatever doesn't pop up I'll be starting again. Last year I only had to restart the banana when half didn't pop out.

Have just under 1200 sqf to fill and that's not including the herb bed I'll be putting in..

Didn't know I needed to start the onions so early. I'm going to try and sow some seeds in 2 weeks into the ground and see what happens. Just started doing onions last year and went with the sets I'll do both this year.

Just picked up 20 half inch flex pipes from peavey mart in Lindsey. 70% off can't go wrong . Was needing something to keep the netting up and off the ground this will work perfectly.

Also going to make a few temporary greenhouse boxes to get an early jump on a few things that I will plant directly into the ground. Always experimenting with something lol.

Been starting more I just can't stop lol

Got 6 banana peppers

Some tiny Tim's

And sweet 100s cherry tomatoes.

Also a fee types of lettuce.


Thinking I'll plant my onion seeds later next week in a 3by3 bed covered with a homemade greenhouse. We will see how they turn out compared to the sets I'll also add in.

I would like to plant Sunchokes (Jerusalem artichokes) but cannot seem to find any. Does anyone grow them?
Any idea where I could get them around Ottawa?

Interesting you asked. Somehow got curious about sunchokes. Was out for a run with the dog and if my plant ID is accurate think I found some wild/feral chokes. Dug up some roots going to plant 'em in a spot in the garden this year and see what develops.

The wild ones are good to eat but they don't grow as large, my neighbour has some. I'm trying to find the larger tubers.

So I went out and bought some Sunchokes to try eating them before I plant any.

So I cooked them in the air fryer as fries, they have a nutty flavor which is kinda ok a bit strong.
Wow they give you gas and bloating. Don't know what to say but their not for me.

I also started preparing Straw bales for a small garden. This process takes around 3 weeks.
I am covering my with 3 shovels of chicken manure and straw, produced during the winter also adding some 20-20-20 Miracle gro.
The idea behind this is to condition the bales .

I plan to plant a few string beans, Cherry Tamatos, Lettuce, Spinach, carrots on top then Cukes, Cantaloupe or melons on the sides.
When the lettuce / spinach are done for the summer I will plant Broccoli.

I will also plant in another corner of my yard some potatoes, using a combination of straw and chicken manure.

I also have planted 3 Haskap that will be 4 years this year and 5 blueberry about 4 years but set back 1 year as I accidentally gave them two doses of Aluminum Sulphate.

So just picked up the first of the asparagus. Should be a daily supply for the next few weeks. That an a bunch of spring onions going to be the base of a nice rizzotto tonight
