Looking for a new rod

I am now officially looking forward to spring (I will even try to get in some fishing in between turkey hunting). In anycase I am looking for a new medium action (M to ML) spinning rod and was curious who gives the best value for the $$. At the present time I have a Diawa Terra Nova c/w a Sidestab 2500 reel and a Ugly Stick UL c/w a Pfulger President UL reel, and am looking for a second M to ML rod to accomodate my Sienna 2500 reel. I am going to pick one up at either the fishing show or the sportsman show. I have been looking at the following:

- Berkley Tactix
- Fenwick GT
- Shimano Convergerance
- or another Terra Nova

It would be used for primarily bass, walleye, and pike.

........any suggestions......would any one brand offer more value than another??

i really like the fenwick GT,
i used to own one until i hit a wave and 3 rods flew out of my boat!
but ya its a really good rod in my opinion.. and i used it fer bass, and trollin fer pike!
i actually am going to be buying another one

check out the shimano compre. for the price its really good...there strong and really sensitive and they have a lifetime warranty... its hard to say anything bad about that rod.

I'd have to say check out the shimano scimitar............excellent rod for the price!

fenwicks are beautys. cant beat em. i have a slew of walleye class baitcasting rods an a few steelhead rods they are phenominal. never let me down.

Check out the St.Croix Mojo Bass rods, new this year and look awesome, I will be picking one up for my Quantam PT Baitcaster. For $129.99 cdn, they are awesome for the money! I have St.Croix rods and they are simply the best, I have Avids, Premiers, Wild River Salmon/Steelhead rods and the ice rods. Soon to call my rod locker a home will be the 7'11" Heavy Flippin' Mojo Bass rod.

prpbably not everyones choice,but i have a 10ft okuma celios rod, amazing, can pull in the biggest fish you can think or and can take a beating, used it at bronte, niagara and every other river this past year no complaints, they range around the $70 mark

I have two Premier MF and MLF one piece St. Croix rods with Pleuger President and Shimano Stradic reels. These work best for me and have found great deals on them driving thru Michigan at Dick's sports of all places. I can use the St. Croix for walleye, jigging, trolling, even with a dipsy diver with no problems hauling in huge bass and pike too. I've had/still have Fenwick HMG, Golden Wing, Shimano and various knock off IM7 rods and none compare to the versatility and value of my St. Croixs.

St. Croix Avid is an excellent choice.

What is your budget? For around $100, you can get a very decent medium action spinning rod.

St. Croix rods are sometimes too expensive for the average angler, bought an 8'6" Salmon/Steelhead rod, worked great for

a year, then went to the river, went to toss the Mepps Aglia Long, and the rod snapped in half! $150 down the River!

I've had a Shimano Bob Izumi Signature Series Medium/Hvy rod for 5 years now, most versatile rod I've ever owned

Both Browning and Fenwick are my top choices, with a 1500 Sedona. Great wally kit , very well balanced , and very sensitive . IMO

Cabelas has some sweet deals on right now!

Berkley Lightning Rod!!!! Like $50 or $60 for a good IM7 graphite rod. I have three and LOVE them. Hard to find in 7 foot length light-medium though, which is my preference. They have lots of 6.5 footers though. I also picked up a nice 7 foot light-medium walleye rod from BPS last year and have been quite impressed with it. Again, like $60, very sensitive and seems to be well built...

The St. Croix rods are AMAZING, but super pricey, and I'm not sure you can feel THAT much of a difference with them.

I have 3 Loomis rods and yes you can feel the difference. My wife has a Fenwick HMG with a 2000 Sedona and it's a very nice set up, but doesn't have the feel of my SR843 with a Stradic 2000. The sensitivity is something incredible. I bought that rod after I broke my second Lightning Rod. The first one broke setting the hook on a perch at Rice Lake.

Did you try taking the St. Croix that broke back? I think they have a lifetime warranty the same as my Loomis rods.

Bottom line is you get what you pay for. I have cheaper rods as well, but they don't have the balance or feel of the more expensive rods like St. Croix, Loomis or Fenwick.

I'd recommend a Lightning Rod, can't go wrong for the price. The med-lite is the better of the 2, more sensitive, I use it for jigs/spinners/dropshotting, and the med, I use for jerkbaits.

You can use my St.Croix Premier 7' Med-Lite walleye rod when were up north, then you'll know :D

Shimano Compre - cheapest rod out there that comes with lifetime warranty.

- Good quality guides play a more important role than the rod in the sensitivity department. Especially the tip guide.

Judging by the species, I would suggest a 6 1/2' - 7' Medium Power, fast action rod. If you lean more towards the Bass and Pike - go for the Medium Heavy Power.

Those Ugly Sticks won't break, but I find they lack backbone through the lower end of the blank.

For the price range of the Ugly Stick, I find the Berkely Lightening Rod, to be more sensitive, and has a lot faster action (more back-bone) !

Thanks for all the responses guys! i went to the fishing show looking to buy a $50 rod and ended up spending a little more. I was at the counter with my Mojo Bass but it was not a 2 pc so I started to second guess.....nice rod but I love the compact 2 pc design. So I bought the St.Croix Triumph (6'6" Medium Fast). Nice feel and the price was right $70

Good for you, I think you made a good choice, thats a good price for a St. Croix!

Good choice for a rod and happy fishing with it.
I am considering a Mojo Bass, but can't decide which model to buy. As an angler with a couple of one piece rods, they a great to fish with, but a pain to transport, so maybe a Triumph for me as well.:fish:

I think the compre is ok. IMO, the best rods are made by rod companies, ie sage, loomis, St. Croix etc vs a rod and reel company. But which rod is "better" is a personal choice. I think my rods are best, becuase they suit my needs. I also have a garage and basement full of rods, and finally settled on the ones that are best for my needs.

Just bought a new 1 piece mojo st.croix 7ft (it looks and feels amazing) and paired it with a new stradic 2500.. Cant believe how light the rod is!! 3.9oz wow. For the price you cant go wrong hopefully it last as long as my 5 year old shimao convergence, i have never had a St. croix before.

Anyone checked out the new Rapala R-type for around $80 or the Rapala TS2 Series rods for about $50 bucks? They look like pretty good bang for your buck?

berkleys break, my lightning tip broke while pulling line through the guides, dads lighting broke when he closed the trunk on it lol... and my new amp rod broke while screwing in the reel tooo tightly...
guess i gotta stop being cheap lol.... if shimano rods are anything like my sahara reel then i will be laughing with a new shimano... plus lifetime warranty

I have read only good things about these rods, specially the R-types.

Me two they look great, they do seem a bit on the heavy side, but have been hearing that they are awesome, i have not tried one tho. In 2010 rapala is coming out with rods that are going to be in the 150-200 range to compete with the high end st. croixs and shimano, cant wait for those!

I have two St. Croix rods, a light spinning (6&1/2' 2 pc) and a 8', 5 wt 4 pc fly rod. Both have been great, and offer good value, although my wife may differ.

I have six St. Croix Avids and they have all been great rods. Light and sensitive, they are pricy but they also will not break the bank. The waranty on them is great also.
I will look into the St. Croix Mojo line for my two sons. Looking to get some bass rods for them.
One thing how can I hide them from my wife as the colours of them will stand out. :scream:
