1 word: spammers. They won't take the time to put 50 posts up before they starting flooding the site with ads for Viagra or hot dates or cheap sneakers.
That and the idea here is to promote an active community, not a place to sell an item and never come back. 50 Posts doesn't take all that long if you participate. Welcome to the forum!
Yup pretty much what I thought. Thanks guys!
Great, here's one more post to say thank you for explaining the need for 50 posts beforeposting in the classifieds. Now I know.
I think 50 is a little extreme though. While it prevents spammers, it may encourage a lot of single line, thoughtless response posts just to get one's numbers up enough to participate in the classified section. 25 posts may be a better number.
The single line, thoughtless posts will be seen, removed and the user's post to the For Sale section removed as well (and possible access to the sale forum). With over 42,000 discussions on the forum there is no reason a member cannot reach the 50 post requirement while participating in the forum.
The For Sale section is a member benefit and in place for members that are actively part of the community.
If people want to sign up for a forum to simply sell items they can use services designed for this - such as E-Bay, Kijiji or Craig's List.
CalTek,
When we roll over to the new system, everybody will be back to 0 posts right? Do we all have to reach 50 posts again before the for sale section is active?
Also, can it be made so that the for sale forum is only visible to those with +50 posts? Would that make sense, so that there is no more bellyaching about the arduous task of reaching 50 posts? Or would it make it too limited to people (particlarly newbies) to see the deals tat may be had?
FW
Post count should remain the same as will all the threads/posts.
Only issue we will see with the new system is finding the custom add-ons (such as the 50-post requirement). Hopefully most of what we use now will be created/available for the new software.
I like your idea of the forum being visible only to those that qualify.
We will be looking at upgrading the main website as well as the forum software in 2013. No set date yet just a work in progress :)
"Also, can it be made so that the for sale forum is only visible to those with +50 posts?"
I actually think that is a bad idea.. There are people that may come to this site and find something you want to sell that are not members. If you want to sell your expensive thing-a-majig why would you want to limit the audience? Also, isn't it possible that NEW members were drawn here by that feature? I'd leave that part alone.
Lol I am one closer 2
The other downside to the 50 post minimum is replying to posts... Someone has a FS ad, but their mailbox is full, so I can't send a PM. But I can't reply to their ad... so I'm unable to contact the person. I get why we do it... to weed out the spam... but it's still frustrating.
No one can reply on an ad except the poster...why not put up a post for the person to clear their inbox? It will also count in your post count.
Darnit Jason...you beat me to it.

I can see you want to keep spammers away, but I agree 50 is a little excessive. And I would like to point out E-Bay is not an option as firearms can not be sold on E-Bay.
