NWTF?

Recently our club ran an NWTF fundraiser banquet and raised a substantial amount of money for the Federation. I know there are a number of these banquets held in Ontario every year and though I've never been to one I was just curious where all this money raised goes. I know it helped finance the trap and transfer program for year but I believe that is no longer running. Are there any other local projects the NWTF helps fund? Couldn't find much on their website but I'm sure we have some NWTF members here who could help shed some light on this.

South Carolina I believe. I don't know the exact number of banquets held in Ontario every year but I do know that only a small portion comes back to this province. Once a year the nwtf releases the info on how much was spent that year in which state/province and what the combined past totals spent in each region are. In 2011 $12300 superfund dollars were spent in Ontario and the current all time total is $642922. This is on page 104 of the may.june issue of turkey country which is the nwtf's magazine.The super fund money is spent in any region where the nwtf is doing work or feels some work needs to be done and not just in the area where the money was raised. Other regions money helped to pay for our trap and transfer projects too.

what is an RD?

is a better solution simply managing the habitat privately by buying marginal land and improving it for wild turkeys and other animals?

There is a reason why in the USA they have millions of turkeys and Ontario we have been at 70,000 to a 100,000 population for a long time now its because they get all the funds. I know its warmer there but they have yotes and other things that eat turkey's and there population is over populated and we are just managing what we have and not populating more. I think its time for Ontario to get a piece of the pie once in a bit, to start making Ontario what it once was.... Just my two cents.

NWTF should throw their support behind the ALUS program.....then again that would take money away from the Turkey Taj mahal they built down in South Carolina. They don't fight for hunters rights up here.

I read thru their organizations prospective/mandate when I first took my Turkey course some 15 yrs ago...sounded fishy back then so I never gave them a red cent and never attended any of the NWTF functions..it just never made sense for Hunters here.

Some guys just like to join clubs and be part of an identifiable group, so they unwittingly drop money into these types of things, nothing wrong with it , really, if you have fun and enjoy the camaraderie with fellow members.

OntGobbler is right on the money !!! I was a founding member of the Southwestern Ontario Longbeards chapter. We worked our arses off, putting the banquets together. I also was involved with the trap and transfer, spending hours trapping birds. When it came time to try and get some of the money back for projects here, it was like pulling teeth. I finally got fed up and told the NWTF to stuff it. I'm not even a member anymore. I got tired of sending all our dollars to Edgefield !!! I carved a scene into a moose antler, of a gobbler and a couple of hens. I was basically commissioned by them to do the carving, and they would raffle it off as part of the core package. After some 100 hrs work, they would not even come up with some cash for my work. I still have the carving !!! I'll not send one more dollar to Edgefield and the NWTF.

Not to hijack this thread,but,after researching exactly what has already been cited here,this is the main reason I take ALL these organisations with a huge grain of salt. My pet peeve currently is with QDMA. It appears that most of these organisations exist only as revenue generators. There's only one that I've found that actually "walks the walk" and I don't mind saying,either,that it's Ducks Unlimited. Most of the ones I've looked into to possibly support over the last few years are very dubious,indeed. I recommend excerting considerable due diligence.

Due diligence is the key. Delta Waterfowl's chapters get 25% of there events profits for conservation and hunting promotion efforts. Their Canadian office is in a strip mall...I like that!!

Wow, this has been an eye opener! When all was said and done our club raised $26,000 for the NWTF in this one banquet alone. That's a lot of local conservation dollars not going toward local conservation. Now I'm ticked!

This is a big reason why I support and participate in the local Delta Chapter. I would also assume it provides a good incentive for members to raise more money... it's really a win-win situation.

DU is great too... but... the local/individual chapter simply hands over there cheque every year. Not saying that don't do good work, but It's nice when the local guys have the ability to do some on-the-ground work.

I couldn't agree more with you Ontgobbler. I tried to stay middle of the road with my last post but I'm not a big fan of them either. I too was a founding member of a chapter and on the committee for six years. I worked my butt off as did the other guys and we got nothing for it. In the six years I was on the committee our chapter alone raised well over $100 000 and we got practically nothing for it. That is only one chapter,I think we have at least thirty in the province. It is very safe to say that millions have been sent to Edgefield South Carolina from Ontario for little return on the dollar. I haven't been to one of their banquets in years now. I do still support Delta though. If that money raised in Ontario would have been spent in Ontario it would have made a huge difference to wildlife here in Ontario. I don't agree with my donation money being spent on giant castles for the big wigs to hang out in and try to impress the public with.I think the money could be much better spent elsewhere . I'm surprised it took this long for this thread to light up!

In the USA they have the drive and some proper encouragement from above and make the General Public aware of the sport and show the safety encouraged towards others. Money funding gets used there.

wonder why the huron?perth chapter is gone?they have raised over 500,000 dollars over the years and received an award and then were told they had made a big enough profit and that the NWTF would take over and show them how to run their chapter. this is after 15 years. those guys worked their butts off and then get slapped in the face. i gave up my membership after this. they do not deserve our hard earned dollars.

Wow... I'm really at a loss for words here... and any of you who have read my child-like arguments, know that me being at a loss for words just doesn't happen...

The way I see it is there are 3 types of hunting organizations. Those who fight on the political level, those who fight on the field level, and those who fight for our dollars. I'm a big fan of the OFAH, DU, and Delta. I'm a member of the OFAH, and just haven't gotten around to becoming a member of DU or Delta yet. I know, lame excuse, but I just keep forgetting. I don't hunt waterfowl so its not on my mind much. But even though I don't hunt waterfowl doesn't mean that I don't recognize the importance of these organizations or value their efforts. These three don't have to fight for our dollars because their work is evident to us.

I always wondered why DU and Delta managed to do work in the field, and other organizations didn't... This is such a shame. Shame is the understatement of the year. I've said before that hunters are their own worst enemies, and this kinda shows that in the fact that we're willing to take advantage of each other like this. As said before by others, this isn't directed at the local guys who worked hard, but at the upper management types.

What a shame. But good for TPM, and his crew for the honest effort. Maybe the next banquet you hold could be for local work and programs. It's evident that you guys can get the job done.

There is no support for Canada anymore and I don't think there ever was much, other than using us to generate money for the states. NWTF has pulled out of Canada. I received a letter from them early in the fall stating that due to some government issues it wasn't financially sound to proceed with organizing in Canada. Basically it said that they weren't getting a free ride tax wise from the government anymore so they were bailing because they weren't going to make enough profits. This club disgusts me and I made that known to them when I wrote back to them. They gave me a cookie cutter response that dodged the issue. I thought I was doing my part by joining the group to help a game animal that I love but I definitely will not be renewing my membership next year.

I hate to tar them all with the same brush,but,evidence is evidence. Any time a U.S. organization shows up,it's always about the M-O-N-E-Y. It matters NOT which one it is,QDMA,NWTF,all of them. Next time you feel like supporting one of these outfits,simply follow the money. It never fails. Somewhere,someone has dreamed up a scheme to suck money out of unsuspecting people because we tend to take them at face value. That's a big mistake. NWTF lost their "charitable status" because they failed to ensure adequate funding actually stayed in Canada. That,people,is tax fraud,pure and simple. I don't believe in coincidences. The proof is the fact they chose to get the he** out of Dodge,instead of simply re-arranging their finances and complying with the Tax Act. Good riddance and they can take the rest of them with them,too.

When the NWTF first started in my part of Southern Ontario about 16yrs back we had some slick talker come in pumped everyone up. (I'm sure I don't have to give his name K) We had the first dinner, raised a great deal of money, at the time I was treasurer and my friend was the president, things happened that shouldn't have and we eventually read the writing on the wall and stepped down from the committee. I hold them in very low regard, they are not a fit organization like DU or Delta. On the other hand if a Canadian chapter started up that had a good reputation, I would be more than happy to donate a turkey hunt from my own land for a fund raiser, if the money was to remain here. That is the way that things are supposed to work. I really hope in time that will take place.

I went to a fundraiser last year and became a member out of the Chatham club. i won't be renewing my membership and feel too much money going to the U.S.A side plus turkeys are doing well enough. I would sooner see my money go towards pheasant reintroduction or Northern Bobwhite Quail. A Canadian club needs to be formed not associated with any U.S.A organization keeping the money in Canada.

Not only do local Delta chapters get to retain 25% of the net from their events to re-invest locally, the money raised through events and memberships stays in Canada to fund Delta's work in Ontario and the prairie pothole region.

Delta also advocates for hunters, helping secure a dove season in ON, a crane season in AB, etc.
