Hunting Lab breeder near Kingston Ontario

Hi Everyone,

I'm looking for some help and some advice. Currently, I have a 14 year old chocolate lab (Maggie). She has been a wonderful dog. However, at 14 years of age her waterfowl hunting days are over. I am so blessed that she is still fairly healthy. I would never get another dog until Maggie does pass, but I would like to start my research now. I am looking for a good quality hunting lab breader (In the Kingston area would be prefered). Does anyone know of a quality breeder that they can share their experiences with me?

P.S Colour doesn't matter to me.

There are a few breeders on the forums here. I have met one personally, 3 Black Dogs. I haven't gotten a dog from him but TurkeyRookie has. 3 Black Dogs is in Ancaster and TurkeyRookie travelled from Timmins to pick up his pup. PM them and just see what kind of experience TurkeyRookie had.

i have some friends who i hunt with who have bred their dogs together and the pups will be available in the next 2 weeks. no papers but they can read but purbreed. honestly i'm not into this but maybe you are. send me a PM if you want more info. they are outside waterloo

Check out Shawn at Oakridge retrievers. He is in Port Perry I believe? His dogs are round $1250. Proven grand national dogs.

I got my chocolate from Lola Nichol at Maktawae Kennels. She breeds great dogs where show and field lines meet. Maktawae Luke Bo Duke is almost 5 months old. He is smart as a whip and nice and calm not a high energy balls out all the time field trial dogs.

So many awesome breeders in Ontario it's hard to go wrong. I wouldnt buy a dog out of a backyard with no papers or pedigree. Unless that's your thing.

With labs being so popular you should have no problem getting a great one from reputable breeders. I also wouldn't touch a backyard bred one. The price doesn't mean much over a dog's lifetime but a serious health defect like hips can be devestating.

i agree with teryym i know both dogs and they are in great shape and health but you have to be carefull. better save than sorry.

You are smart to take your time to make sure that you find the right dog.
You should try to hook up with some trainers in your area BEFORE you put money down on a pup.
They will likely steer you into a good breeding that will allow you to go as far with a dog as you like.
Lots of people just want a hunting dog, until they get bitten by the training bug.
I would try to contact Dave Thompson of Gahonk Kennels, in Brighton, and ask him to find you a good litter.

Just an FYI : By law you can not call a dog a/pup a purebred if you don't have the papers.

" It is illegal in Canada to sell a dog as a purebred without supplying registration papers free. The seller must register and transfer the ownership of the dog to the buyer at no cost. This is protected by the ANIMAL PEDIGREE ACT." quote

I've heard that too, but it wouldn't surprise me if they had another litter or two beforehand.

I'm pretty sure they are done training. They were selling off a bunch of stuff on canadianguntingdogs.com. I got a 209 primer ALFA off them.

There is the Kingston Area HRC and Eastern Ontario Retrievers Club (CKC) that train regularly out of Kingston. Things are slowing down for most that are hunting and not heading to Oklahoma or Iron Bridge in the next few weeks. If you're interested in coming out shoot me a PM, I train daily either alone or with one of the two clubs...

Hi Everyone,

Just want to thank everyone for all the help and advice so far. I am not in any hurry and will be taking my time as I do my research on a new retriever. My dog Maggie was a great dog that I got 14 years ago, from a breeder in Kingston. The breeder has now moved to more of the show dogs rather than the hunting breed. As I mentioned, Maggie's hunting days are over (Although her heart doesn't tell her that). I am blessed that we have had so few health problems with her and that she has lived such a long life. However, with that said, I have to admit I am not fond of walking out to pick up my geese and ducks! :whacked::D

Unfortunately Ontario has it's fair share of mediocre breeders also.

Just a couple of comments:
Ontario like any other place has it's share of mediocre or poor breeders. That is usually the case. Take time to research before buying etc........

"not a high energy balls out all the time field trial dogs. " is a very inaccurate statement that continues to be made . Field trial dogs are just....field trial dogs and are reflective on how they are brought up....just like children. Mine are well mannered in the house and clearly have an 'off' switch . They lay on the carpet in front of the TV or in the kitchen or in the trailer if we are away.
People who complain about their behaviour need to be just a bit reflective on how they brought their dog up....you know you get what you allow......

My field bred Springer is very good in the house but I do have to close the blinds because she runs from window to window looking for birds LOL. She obeys all her commands but I am sure not all field lines are the same and do not come with an off switch. That would take many years in a breeding program to produce such an animal...but they do exist.

I think certain breeds have more of a tendency to have that off switch but of course you get what you condone. My guy just turned 18 months and I don't know if its the age or the heat but I think he's finding his switch hahahaha. Puppies are naturally going to be a bit more wound up - trial breeding or not, they're babies.

No,
Someone classed as a professional takes $$ for training other peoples' dogs. It's their job....and not an easy one.

Careful watch on this is kept in the American Field events.
If you want to participate in Amateur events you are careful not to take ANY money for training /handling someone else's dog. It doesn't have to be your full time job , you only need to do it once + to be considered a pro. (There will always be some jerk around to report you.)
This is why you don't pick a pro to train your dog based on the fact that they are a "pro" alone. They may have only trained 2 dogs. You pick a pro based on their reputation in training dogs successfully.

By the number of pros in the States it looks like just about anyone can hang out their shingle. The pros in the retriever game here in Ontario have been in the game for a great many years and have the successes to back up their programmes. Like anything you need to do your research when picking a pro just like you do with a breeder.

Found my pro trainer in the states for my springer who has forty plus years of training and breeding success. I would think to be fair to the U.S that alot more people are into the dog training business than in Canada mainly because of population base. I found my trainer through my Ontario breeder who didn't know of any pro spaniel trainers in Ontario.

There are numerous dog trainers here in Ontario. Some claim to be able to deal with a broad range of dogs, some more specific. The trainers Ebenezer was referring to , I have known for over 30 years. They are specific to retrievers and have long lists of successes. That is not to say that someone new can't come along and offer their services but best to check and check out thoroughly as has been said previously.
YD...we have no professional spaniel trainers in the province.....I'm surprised......

There are indeed no pro spaniel trainers in Ontario. I'm not very surprised -- pointing dogs and retrievers are much more popular.

Yes they are more popular Welsh but why ? I wish I would of gotten a Spaniel years ago they are so much fun and a fantastic family pet.

I know not why. But no pro trainers with no demand ... as I understand it, not even the top spaniel trainers in the country are pros.

Cass you need to become a pro trainer because I am too old to become one ! lol

LOL it certainly would be a dream job YD but I think welsh hit the nail on the head - no demand. Certainly couldn't leave my career now to train spaniels hahaha. Who knows, maybe in a few years the focus will shift from versatiles back to flushers. For me a spaniel makes sense - specifically the way it hunts and its size. If size was not a factor though when I got mine I would have bought a lab. In time I may still get a lab, but knowing how much fun spaniels are now I think I'm hooked. Pretty excited for fall hunting... and I think we may jump in on a trial as well. Unfortunately I cannot compete in any hunt tests this summer due to work but I do hope to enter some trials this fall as long as everything goes as planned. I do not think I will run him in puppy though - might as well play with the big boys. Just gotta work on honoring.

I sometimes wonder why so few pro's exist here in Ontario. I'm surprised that more young trainers don't see the possibility of a career here. It's a tough road for sure, but the smart ones get on the right path and eventually do pretty good for themselves, if they are truly dedicated.

So who is training Frank O'Grady's springers for him then ?

Ben Martin of Royal Kennels.

Frank makes it very clear on his website that Ben is the pro trainer he refers all his clients to.

Ben is working with a couple of young guns and I was fortunate enough to meet one of them at a trial. Ben isn't a young man and I would assume these trainers are in the making to some day take over. Frank O'Grady does some training for himself but spends most of his time hunting and raising litters.
