Drive-in fishing w. phone or net access AND lots of fish..... tall order?

Hey all,

4 of us take an annual week-long fishing trip every year. Last year we flew into a cabin N. of Sudbury on Indian Lake and the walleye fishing was excellent. Each of the other years we have driven-in to various lodges and the fishing has been less than stellar. Based on these experiences we probably would fly-in again this year. However, one of the crew managed to get his wife pregnant recently. We are expecting that the baby will be only a few months old during early June when we normally go on our trip.

For this reason, he is going to need to be able to touch base w. home during the week we are away - or at least be able to be reached fairly easily.

My question to you guys is therefore this: Can anyone recommend a drive-in lodge that offers GREAT fishing for walleye/pike around this time of year AND has either internet access or phone capabilities? We are based out of Ottawa and would likely need to stay within an hour of North Bay. We've done Red Cedar lake before and the French R. Lodges were nice but we didn't catch many fish. We are more concerned with the quality of fishing that the amenities, and we don't mind cooking for ourselves, however - we would need to have that outside contact.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe look at renting a Satellite Phone? Then you can get the best of both worlds?

If you can drive there and have cell signal, chances are the fishing won't match a fly in lodge.

what about going ahead with your fly-in and renting a satellite phone?
i know some outfitters even offer them for use / rent.

You cant beat Indian Lake, It's awsome - rent a satelite phone - I remember a fellow offering one to rent recently on one of the hunting forums - SheepHunter it was I believe.

By the way you can get into indian by boat using the rail carrier to cross your boat from Biscoe to Indian, and camp on one of the many island camp sites.

I think it's also the idea of being able to pack out and get home quickly in the event of an emergency. As in her knowing he could come back if needed. We can't really get that with a fly-in outfit. I agree with you guys. I think it's just a shot in the dark.

Try http://www.roadpost.ca/how_it_works_satellite.aspx. It's easy and $10/day you don't have to settle for lesser fishing opportunities.

Since you are in Eastern Ontario why not look at the Chateau Montebello in West Quebec? Really great accommodations and food plus 35 private lakes for fishing - not to mention the Ottawa River for world class muskies.

If your were to go into indian by boat, instead of plane, you would be able to get out to hwy 144 in about 4 hours realistically. Especially easier if you camp on biscoe lake (where the fishing is excellent) and just day trip over to indian, then you would be only 3 hours from the hwy, or even less time, if you camp close to the main landing where the fishing is not as good.

Personally, I'd be suggesting he sits out this year and the three go to somewhere where ya's wanna' go.

I would say rent a sattelite phone, but apparently its already been said about 20 times lol......So I won't say it.

There is a place called Minawaki just outside huntsville but it has speckle and rainbow trout .

Even the Montreal Rvier (the access point into Evelyn) before the dam is great fishing. Lots of Walleye, perch and pike. If you go into some of the smaller back lakes, there are lake trout and specks to be caught too. White fish are also in the river, but not easy to catch after May.

I'll check them out. The Spanish place looks good but is a tad far. I will check out the Huntsville one. In terms of the Sat. phones that may be a way to go. The only issue with it is that you still can't drive home. Appreciate all the suggestions though! I will keep checking this and look into any other places people know of.

Been there a few times now. Stay in town in a house (phone, internet), drive to a different lake each day to fish for walleye and pike.

i can suggest Limberlost lodge, its in thesallon, not far from the saulte, the lake that its on has preety good lake trout, and walleye fishing, but about a 5 minute drive from it there are some rapids and you catch pike every cast, i used a crickhopper, lure for 9 bucks from ct, nothing else worked, i guess you just have to figure out what bait the fish like best, also if you were to come when bass was open excellent smallmouth fishing sizes ranging from 2-6 pounds

The Limberlost I'm talking about is just east of Huntsville off of # 60 highway Limberlost road , Fishman . Stocked lakes full of rainbows and speckles .

The last couple of years my son and I have fished the Upper French River and SW Nipissing from the Dokis Marine to the lake. There are many fishing lodges in the area, the scenery is spectacular and the fishing is excellent.

We went last year for the first time, and booked late so we could only get in mid August. About 1 1/2 hour north of North Bay. It was hot and fishing slow, but once we figured out the deep holding points of the fish, action was steady. Great cabins, good, clean reliable boats. Gord the owner was helpful, and great to deal with. Prices were reasonable, and we had cell service. Drive to lodge that actually had fish.

Try Gow-Bush-Kon Lodge in Gowganda, no cell service but phone and wifi available. Great walleye and pike fishing,lots of smallies and lake trout. From Ottawa 6 1/2 hour drive. Check them out www.gowbushkon.com
