Good Carp fishing locations within 100k of Toronto?

Good morning everyone,
New member here and first post on the board. :)

My grandfather wants to fish only and solely for carp.
He traditionally makes like a minced patty from it (taste pretty good with some horse-raddish hehe)

Can any of you kind folks recommend a location that is pretty plentiful in carp from a location that is edible...?
I was thinking in Trenton, I think the 401 exit was around like 540 or 500 but I haven't been down there in ages and can't remember.

Would kindly appreciate any suggestions as prompt as possible!

I have seen fishing shows on TV where they are fishing for carp on toronto island.

Not a carp fisher myself but since you're in a rush I'll try to help. Plenty of carp in and around Toronto, including at the Islands and Leslie Spit, but not sure you'd wanna eat one from there, carp accumulate a lot of PCBs and stuff. I like to refer to the MOE's Guide to Eating Ontario Sport Fish, which gives meals per month recommendations by location/species/size class. Toronto Harbour carp they say only eat one meal a month, and even that only if the fish is <22" and not if you're a kid or a woman of childbearing age. Any fish they recommend 8 meals per month for is as clean as you can get. From their tables it looks like there are good clean carp in Holland Marsh (the river and the canals), Eaton Hall Lake in King, Lake Scugog, and even Rouge Marsh and Oshawa Harbour if you stay away from the really big ones, plus probably a bunch more I didn't check. Hopefully that gets you started. Good luck.

I was under the impression Toronto itself was a world class carp fishery. Ive seen more then one show with guys fishing around the city.

Definitely true, what comes down to a personal question is what you're willing to grind into a patty and eat. If you're only eating this on rare occasion and you're not serving children or pre-maternal women, then maybe you'd be comfortable just catching one in Toronto. If you'd rather take health precautions then a rural area is better.

The Grand River from Brantford to Lake Erie has good fishing for carp. The Guide to Eating Ontario Sport Fish says Carp up to 28" long can be eaten 8 times a month. A good spot on the Grand River to catch Carp is Byng Island Conservation area near Dunnville. Carp are generally congregating near tributaries. If you spot a river feeding into lake Ontario, chances are good there will be plenty of carp. Good luck!

When i used to live there (Toronto) my buddy and i would often spend the day there snagging HUGE carp. We bring a dozen tall boys and chunk of hash and get stoned out of our heads and snag carp. Those were the days..

The Holland Marsh area has some really good carp.

Little Lake, downtown Peterborough. Remember to groundbait with some breadcrumb/corn kernal balls...little and often until you see the lines of fizzy bubbles, then they're heads are down in it and its go time !!! Fish canned corn on the hook.

Cootes Paradise is crawling with them

Bellwood lake. I've taken carp from there, and it tastes good, since Belwood lake is an artificial lake, deep and not muddy& weedy like Rice lake. Another place is Indian River, which flows to Rice Lake in the north.

Centennial park pond in Etobicoke

We used to catch them in Newmarket. Just north on Main Street. There's a river.
Up until about 10 years ago. The area got ridiculously polluted.

The very last time I was there, my buddy remarked "there's everything in this river but a kitchen sink" and honest to God, no word of a lie, as we rounded the corner a few moments later, there was ACTUALLY a kitchen sink sitting in the river.

The Otonabee River along Water St. in the North end of Peterborough is a very good spot. Lots of places to just pull your vehicle up to the river edge, unload your stuff and start fishing.

Bowmanville creek, behind the railroad station south of 401 or walk up from the west beach road were it crosses the river. Wander the west side of the water, throw back any rainbow or atlantics :cool:

Port Perry behind the Independant food store.

Cook's Bay

Birch Bend Resort on Chemong Lake, new owners, each cottage has own firepit now, great for night fishing. Been there twice. Ask the owners to prebait...bring lots of boiled maize (lots)....we mix with strawberry jello mix. Terminal bait is cucc corn or monster maize on a hair bolt rig. Fish averaged 18-28 lbs and will spool you, strongest carp I've fought. I'm trying Lake Katchewanooka in Sept. , Katchewanooka Resort. These resorts cater to the Brits that come over specifically to fish for our wild carp.

Another good spot is Big Creek at Long Point, have banked 28 fish in a day totalling close to 400 lbs. Grand River in Brantford and Cambridge are always hot if you intercept a pod... Always be prepared to devote 6-8 hours minimum for a session...many times the action comes after many hours of nothing.....they will find you and then all hell will break loose.

I dont eat carp but the cleanest looking fish came from Chemong.... Hope this helps...

Well, I know of a lot of swims closer to home that produce the same plus any trib off of Lake Erie is capable of the same result. I'm going to Dunnville Friday and I'll report back. This year has been sporadic with a lot of blanks, if the lovefest is over then they'll have the munchies and the action should pick up. Good luck with your season.

I know the city banned fishing off the docks down by the Toronto Waterfront (for safety reasons). But what other spots within Toronto can we go fishing?

Or better yet, are there any rules against bowfishing inside the Toronto city limits?

*can just imagine the complaints about public safety if someone was bowfishing on the Toronto Waterfront...*

Not sure but I would think bow fishing within the city is prevented by Toronto's discharge bylaw.

You can shore fish just about anywhere along the Toronto waterfront. Marinas and protected channels are good for carp as well as game fish. If you're looking for carp, your best bet might be Leslie Spit (Tommy Thompson Park). The Cell 1 wetland has a gate to keep carp out, and in the spring they swarm on the outside of the gate.

Probably is, but it is always best to know these things BEFORE heading out to do them.

My understanding is that certain sections of Toronto's waterfront have a fishing ban - but others do not.

And apparently it is a bit confusing because some of the ban only applies during Summer - but other seasons are okay.

Is it just me or does there need to be more clarity on these things so people have a better idea of what is allowed, where it is allowed, and what times of year it is allowed.

Note that they are both dated the same day - and yet the taglines are opposite. Bizarre.

Those no-fishing signs didn't last long. Shortly after they went up Councillor Paula Fletcher brought a motion to take them down and keep fishing legal throughout the waterfront. It passed unanimously on Council.

Eugenia lake in grey county , is loaded with them . fish off the causeway or the dam.Or in a back bay. fermented corn , and niblet corn on a hair. There was also some bowhunting last year. old243
