NO Cougars in Ontario

With respect to a recent post about cougars:


There are NO cougars in Ontario.
There are a bazillion trail cams all over the province.
Most of them are situated to catch White Tail Deer-- one of the preferred foods of the cougar.
There is not one credible pic from any of these trail cams that shows an Ontario Cougar.

Any pic showing a "real cougar" has Douglas Fir or Lodge Pole Pines in the background.
Any other pic is blurry enough to qualify for a "Big Foot TV Special"

We all know the BS of Urban Legends.
When will everyone admit that Cougars are our "Rural Legend" and that there is no naturally reproducing poplulation of cougars in Ontario?

Finally! A sane voice of reason.:D

The Ministry of Natural Resources has now admitted that there are cougars in Ontario, and have scat to prove it. In no way am I trying to say that the last photo in the other thread is a cougar.

If you've flown over Ontario and looked out the window, you'd see the natural habit of the cougar.....who is to say there are none living in the huge vastness of wilderness.....I'm staying open to the idea, to say there are NONE is shortsighted.

is the ministry stating that these are wild, natural cougars or escaped pets? I think they're they latter...

i agree with the OP... no cougars... we'd have more hard evidence by now...

To each his own is my motto. Some will say there are thousands of game cams, and while thats true Ontario is over a million sq km. So even if every game cam was equally distributed its still only 1 game cam per 5, 10, 50, 100 sq km. <<<Thats best case, reality is, most game cams are clustered in tight little area's.

Some will say there are thousands of trappers out there and while thats true to, Ont is huge, at issue is only a few "Cougars" and each individual Cougar has a huge range. Basically, take a place with an established population of Cougars (1,000 or more) say Montanna, BC consider how few are captured on film, seen....now compare to Ont which is much, much larger and the population of "Cougars" isn't 1,000, its maybe a dozen or two.

One does not disprove the other, but it leaves lots of room for "doubt/beleif".

And then a year or two ago, scat was found and DNA testing confirmed that yes, theres at least one Cougar out there.

The vast majority of those "brazillion" trail Cams in use are between Hwy 7 and the St Lawrence/Great lakes.....which also is geographically the smallest portion of the Province....

a dozen cougars? I ain't no bio but how can a pop continue to exist with so few animals... that's not endangered, that is almost extinct for all intents and purposes.. you have to figure that b/w the trappers, cams, MILLIONS of cars that something is either going to show up splattered on the highway or caught/pictured

As far as I know they have been confirmed to exist basically all around us. Que, Michigan, parts of the NE states, as far down as Florida. Cougars don't understand borders, we have the climate, we have the habitat and we are sparsely populated (humans). They have huge ranges, so maybe some are transients, part time residents like snow birds etc.

Arizona. 6 million people
Ontario: 12 million people

Arizona: 100,000 sq km ( about the size of Alqonquin Park)
Ontario: 1,300,000 sq km

Lots of people denied the existence of Jaguars in Arizona. No proof, no images, etc, etc.
Guess what they found and proved last year.


I forget the state but its similar (somewhere quite far south)...A lot smaller, way more population density. People out looking, out trying to find proof, thousands of cameras. Guess what they found last year.

I agree with that we probably do have some in northern ontario but not much happens up there so not many people to see or photograph them. To many people still think northern Ontario is Temagami or Algonquin.

Even if they are escaped pets or cougars that have migrated from the west, what does it matter if they are reproducing? They eventually become part of the ecosystem. The Elk were transplanted here they are no more natural then the cougars.

Don't know which Algonquin Park you are referring to - but the one in Ontario is only about 7500 sq km, and nowhere near the size of Arizona.

Doesn't prove anything with respect to Cougars in Ont, but does illustrate how even in smaller, more densely populated regions of NA, getting the proof everyone expects to have happened is no sure thing. Especially if it may only be a handful or two.

Why now? Why these past 10 years after 100 years?
For the same reasons I might guess. Ontario is huge, and despite our population (concentrated in just a couple areas)...........


They are a solitary creature, they have a huge range (500km) and very elusive.

If you were a cougar in other places where humans are growing like weeds, wouldn't you look for an area where there's lots of wilderness and fewer humans? Ontario, relative to basically everything around would look really, really good

The guy thought he photographed a cougar and he just showed us, whether it was a cougar or not no need for people to open there mouths I they are going to just shoot him down. It's one thing to say "Nope, I see a rock" but it's another thing to tell him to 'lay off the crack like a few people did.

I am certain that cougars exist in Ontario an I'm sure some of you guys feel very different. But these post are getting old. If you have a picture, or a story I would really love to hear it, so please share! But if your going to jus constantly tell us there there are no cougars here without anything intelligent to add- bump your post count somewhere eles :)

I'm aware that this is a discussion board. And I'm not botherd by people sharing there opinion, but now that we've all let eachother know how we feel, why keep harping it? If you haven't figured it out yet certain topics like this one always attract alot of attention and activity. If it bothers you don't tell other people to move on. There are threads here that go into hundreds of posts of mostly repetitive arguing, nature of the beast.

I'd agree. We have some sort of cats - bobcat or lynx in eastern Ontario - but how many of those are showing up on trailcams either. I have one pic in 5 years. I don't know anyone else that has caught one on camera. Cats are far more cautions and secretive than coyotes or wolves.

In the US, they have radio collared western cougars as far east as Connecticut (btw - that's further east of Ontario).
They have also tracked collared western cougars in Wisconsin and Michigan to within a 100 kms of the Ontario border, so whether they are here or not, it is definitely a possibility.

It's a bit difficult for me to grasp someone declaring themselves 'god' and issuing a declaration that there are no cougars in Ontario and that discussion on the topic should cease.

I think most people ( including me ) firmly believe that there are cougars here and always have been. It's the picture of a mossy rock that is reason for the wisecracks.

Well, I believe in the possibility of cougars living in Northern Ontario. I also believe I saw a Dodo last night in my back yard.

One of these statements is true, lets debate on which one :P lol

And one of our problems in this discussion is that Ontario is a big place. There is good evidence of cougars in the northwest. Claims that there are cougars in the southwest are common, but this is where the trail cams are concentrated, and....

There are polar bears in Ontario, too.

No worries Species, Im not stressing over it, its just one of those things. A brain cramp, they happen, like typos, grammatical errors, etc. Its just odd (right word?) I find anyways what gets picked at sometimes. Something I can ignore so long as I get the gist of the post.....But turn around is fair play :)

This will rage likely for years to come and we may or may never get the proof some want to see.
I convinced they are here, have been for a long time. While I dont beleive in little green men that come down and abduct us, or live among us....When you consider the number the universes in the galaxy, its almost a mathematical improbablity that there isn't "life" somewhere. Ontario is huge...and sparesly populated except really S Ont.

Ontario has everything a Cougar could ever hope for, more so these days as urban sprawl and habitat loss in area's not too far away (MI, NE states), where they are known to exist dwindles, and we (man) are growing like weeds.. Given their nature they have to be looking for greener pastures and Ontario must look really green.

Whether they stay, move through, come and go..Who knows.

Im sure one day someone will get a picture and Im sure it will be hotly contested, and many still wont accept the possibility/probability until theres an attack/fatality and even then Im sure it might rage

I believe cougars exist in Ontario, but they are as rare as an honest liberal is in Ontario. You never find one of them in a picture either.

At least MNR validates that cougars exist in Ontario, honest liberals, not so much proof.

When I was in Kenora (2002-2008) I saw something that I am 99% certain was a cougar north of the town. The first time was on the Trans Canada pipeline just off the Jones Rd. it was a quick look, but by the way it moved and the long tail there isn't much else that it could be. The second time was again on the Jones Road south of the crossing, between it and Mark Lake. Neither time did I get a look long enough for a photo.

I know their here Why wouldn't they be ? I and a few other's 100 % ID'ed tracks at my cottage, short of that no other evidense, as usual . I have only ever seen 1 and that was out west at the time. At this point It is pointless to even think or worry about if they exist or not. Yes , No , Maybe , they are so sparse that there is no damage to huntable population's of animal's at this point, cwd should be more of a concern. Every time someone bring's up cougar it usually go's sideway's . Let's all wait for the day that a true "wild" cougar has been captured or shot then start over with our comment's. I'm guilty as well.!!!

I 110% saw a cougar 4 years ago in the feild at my farm close to Minden/haliburton I watched it with binoculars for 2 min in a feild it was deffinately a cougar had a friend with me also who also watched it through the binoculars. It was huge very cool something I'll never forget

I have seen a life size taxidermied mount of one and was actually amazed at how big an animal it is. Total killing machine.

Also one thing that I remember very clearly was the size of it's tail it seemed very long and thick

Last cougar news was from the Health unit in Sudbury, a man was bitten near the Watershed on hiway 144. Cougar was shot and sent to check for rabies. This was a few years ago! Not that this helps for todays stories.

there are cougars in ontario i have seen two on separate occasions while moose hunting in the chapleu area and im not mistakeing a bobcat or lynx they were cougars

I guess seeing one is somewhat of a curse. Who would believe you, well I would. My father and uncle saw one south of Timmins. I questioned my dad about it, I asked if maybe it was a lynx. We were hunting grouse and we saw a lynx shortly after the cougar conversation. I said there, is that what you saw, he answered back pissed at me and basically said thats a lynx dummy! ha ha

A hunt club I know in Ontario had their hounds chase one until the hunt staff, on horse back, caught up to it, saw what it was and knocked the hounds off the line. A GRCA staff member informed me that a few years ago when she was working for the city of Hamilton, they had one hunting in a decommissioned dump on the outskirts of town. They are here.

I know there are cougars in Ontario. One was shot about a year ago in Bracebridge by the OPP!!

Real question is are they natural or escapees from zoos or released as unwanted pets. Apparently the one in Bracebridge had been declawed indicating that it was an escaped or released pet. Until one is captured and the DNA tested to prove what subspecies the animal is, no one can say that they are natural.

As far as elk being native to Ontario, I believe that there is a historical population south of Sudbury at Burwash. The others were brought in to boost or re-introduce the populations where they used to occur.the populations.

The Burwash herd and also a herd on the Bruce Peninsula , were introduced back in the late 50's early 60's.
The herd on the Bruce was decimated very quickly by farmers as they were walking into pastures and barnyards and eating food that was there for the large cattle herds that one time dominated the Bruce, , an old friend of mine that lived on the Bruce around the Lions Head area , said that their family lived very well on the Gov.stocked beef ie. Elk.

If this picture is real, and taken in kenora, it is a cougar. I can't verify where it was taken or wheather or not it's photoshoped, but compared to someother pics I saved or cougars swimming (4 legged one) and compared side by side it looks legit..... However the pic is blurry... I've never used photo shop or anything but does anyone who has it know if you can clear that pic up? Or is there anyway to tell if it's been run through Photoshop before?

Perhaps it should be illegal... But where do you draw the line? 200 pound mastiff or 200 pound cougar? Virtually any pet could turn and kill there owners if they were so inclined. I myself would never own a cougar as I see no need.... I think it's a pretty dumb idea. But there is a risk that comes with owning any pet, I know that my GSP mix could do numbers on me if he wanted but I trust that he never would.... But where does the government get off saying that your cougar is far to dangourous but my German Sheperd is good to go?

Definitely looks like a cougar to me. Picture seems recent based on the foliage in the background.

There is plenty of evidence for cougars in the northwest.

Blew it up a bit. Not a great file to start with but it sure looks like a cougar to me. Look at how long it is you can pretty well see the long tail dragging in the water.

That was kind of my point. There are cases where cougars are found, seen, shot in Ontario. It only counts when one is located, sampled and proven to be one that is native to Ontario and not a release or escapee.
Someone may eventually get a photo of one on a trail cam but that does not prove that it is not an escapee.

When I see one with my own eyes I will believe there are cougars in Ontario. Here on the Bruce Peninsula where I live there have been numerous sightings ( supposedly ) over the last 40 years. My question then and now is where do they go in the wintertime? The deer yard up in this area and venison is a cougars favorite meal, I have coyote hunted a quite a bit in these yarding areas and have yet to see a cougar track, the same goes for probably 20 other hunters that I know of. Maybe they go south for the winter!

I just finished my hunter education course and opn teh wall they had a trail cam pic that clearly showed a cougar right behind a doe. No doubt in my mind it was a cougar. The attached article said the photo was taken just east of Peterbourgh.

I have no way of knowing for certain if it was taken in Ontario but I don't have any cause to not belive it.

That's because there are cougars here

They should be out and about sometime after 10 PM

Take a good look at the actual size of Ontario. There's so much land and water, hell you can drive as many miles north as you'd drive south to

Not saying there aren't cougars here but that picture can't be from Ontario. That's not a whitetailed deer so it isn't a picture from Ontario.

I don't even need to do bark analysis on the trees to know that this is not an Ontario deer.
The western deer -- Pacific Black Tail or Mule Deer has a short narrow tail ending a black tip.
How pathetic that any one would think this is from Ontario!!
There are NO cougars in Ontario.

I've seen some BIG cat prints out towards the back of the property I hunt earlier this winter.
Farmer keeps telling me locals have been talking a lot and are certain there's one in the area.

No other jurisdiction in North America has any trouble whatsoever identifying a self sustaining population of cougars. The state of Montana doesnt have this debate. Nor does Alberta. That there is enough for me to say we dont have one.

We obviously have cougars. The question is are they true wild animals in a self sustaining population, transients, or released/escaped pets. The answer, IMO, is the latter.

I also would question why your frined wont go berry picking without a gun due to cougars? Can you find me a documented cougar attack (on humans) in Eastern Canada/US?

However, passenger pigeons lived in southern Ontario, down to the central/north east states. Cougars live from James bay and beyond, all the way to south America.
That's a huge area, they were hunted other places to, but Ontarios population is concentrated almost completely in the southern part. And most people who live where we call 'up North' don't live very 'North' at all. Cougars are very elusive, even if you live in BC (heathly cougar population) you would be hard pressed to see a cougar in your life. To think we don't at least have a breeding population to me seems ridiculous.

Passenger pigeons are way different, they would fly over head in flocks that could take hours to pass through. Hunters could sit back and pick off as many birds as they wanted. If you had 200 shells, you could have 200 birds in no time.

In order to extirpate a species you wouldn't have to kill them all, you would only have to hunt them to the point where they could no longer breed effectively.

By the way, I have seen what I believe to be a cougar while deer hunting near Bobcaygeon but I still don't believe in a breeding population.

An escaped pet wouldn't last a month in the wild. Hunting is a skill taught by mother, to kitten. A pet would likely also have clipped nails.

Sure that pet cougar killed a 70 pound, tied up dog last summer. And Cat was fat, probably not very fast, if that dog were free to run, may have been different.

Sure a wild dog can get by in the wild, but they usually live near dumps and places that they can scavenge. And many of them are born in the wild. They not pets that have been tied to a 30 ft Chain there whole lives.

The home range of a cougar is estimated to be from 150 square km up to about 1200 square km. That's about 12 km x 12 km up to about 35 km x 35 km at maximum.

on a funny note... A cottager from GTA was saying he has seen a cougar (near parry sound), he told me he saw it almost every night and he has been feeding it.

I thought it was bs but he said he had pic and video, and that he knows his animals. he boasted some thing like "100% a cougar!"

well I wanted to see this pic/video so told him to come back some time with it.

....he was back today to show off this "cougar".

Houndlover, my hat's off to you for sticking to what you believe and for all any of us really know - you may be right. I've become somewhat of a skeptic in recent years and it's not as enjoyable as believing. Sometime I'll tell you about my sighting but I already got more or less laughed out of camp once for telling the story. :goodstuff:

How could we have killed every last passenger pigeon. I agree the habitat and #'s of breeding pairs having declined probably was the last nail in the coffin. I think that has or is happening to the cougars. Look at elk and bison. One went out the other was on the way. Wild turkey's are another example. Without re-stocking we wouldn't have what we have now. Not that I think we should re-stock cougars!!

I was bear calling this weekend from a blind with a rabbit I bled out and we heard her coming in and was circling around at about 40 yard and spitting realized it wasnt a bear. looked out and saw her standing on a beaver dam. gave us a snarl and took off. I set my cam up, left the rabbit and went back this morning to get it on my way to Toronto. Here she is boys.. "NO cougars in Ontario" my . Maybe it's because I am from the Rocky mountains of Alberta and don't sit in trees all day. First hunt trip in Ontario.

Never mind the cougar , but please explain this technique of calling in bears by bleeding out a rabbit?? Sounds interesting.

Where about in 60 were you? My wife's family has property in the north end of 74b which borders 60. Might have to keep an eye out.

Did you send the photo to the MNR they would be very interested.

Maybe it's just me but I've never seen a game cam before that did not put some kind of border/footer/header on the photo to show date/time and brand of camera.

I have 18 extra rabbits at my house, raised them from babies though, you make things quick and painless, not squealing for a bear call.

I do know of people though using electronic calls for bear hunting, it is supposed to be very effective as very few people in Ontario do it.

????? QUESTIONS, questions , and more questions , where is the beaver dam that she is supposedly standing on , his first hunt trip in Ontario ? well he had better learn more about our "Ontario Hunting Regs.", although Bear season is open , Rabbit season does not open till Sept. 25 . :confused:

I set up a blind with camo burlap, bring a rabbit from my farm and bleed it out 20 yards on a trail used by bear. sit in my blind and ing howl for 20-30 minutes. Always set up around dam and lakes so I know they are only coming in one way. Howl until I hear something withing 60 yards or the bear starts talking. Cut out the howling as any injured animal would do when predator is close. Between the smell of the rabbit, blood and howling its a pretty good ing way to hunt. Dog food and popcorn is for lazy people sitting in trees...

I used a distress rabbit call. I only use the rabbit for scent bait.

I know of two sightings in 20 years, and both took place between Kinmount and Fenlon. Do I have proof? Nope, but to me, there from enough of a reliable source that I can't not believe. Either or...... It's as fun as arguing about UFO's...........

Cougars no cougars really who cares either way. What I find disturbing is your need to slag on fellow hunters. To me the guy who has set up a bait site and maintained it. Set up a tree stand and hunted it has done way more work than some Joe who killed a rabbit and hid behind some burlap. Lazy guess its in the eye of the beholder.

So you are from Alberta and this is your first time hunting in Ontario and you already know MNR staff so well that they were willing to tell you they will turn this location into a conservation area. I call BS.

My burlap gets hiked in about 10-20 km on foot down game trails through scag, lakes, and marsh. Every hunting I know here has about a 10 minute walk from his truck. I think the whole concept of seasonal baiting in and don't consider it hunting. Sitting 20' up in a tree watching a feeder/barrel for a week is not hunting. It's not slag, its the truth there fins. You know why I can repeatedly year after year bring in the big scores? because I put in the big effort and go where no one else is going. I walked past 6 tree stands within 1 km from the road I leave my truck... Laziness. How are you going to get anything good when you are in shouting distance of 5 other people. You know why I was able to see a Mountain Lion? because once again I go where no one else goes, I put in the effort. Now on the other hand. To each their own and I couldn't care less what other people do but it sure is something to laugh at....... Props to the stalkers

I have been living in Ontario for 3 years, hunting back home for 2. This is also my 3rd year working a trap line in Ontario so yes I do know MNR. If one thing you need in the world as a hunter is a contact in whatever governing body works your area.. and Yes, she said when cougar are proven to be in an area the Gov. will turn it into conservation land.

One question, how did you get a trap line so soon ? My son just got his trapping licence this year , and was told unless he was willing to go many hundreds ( maybe thousands) of miles north, he would not get a line for years after being put on the list.

It doesn't matter where you hunt budz. Im 29 and have been hunting and trapping since I was maybe 7-8. The ideology of hunting is different between there and Ontario. I know 2 people who sit in stands out west and its on their back fields waiting for elk. In Ontario the norm is to sit there for a week on a baited stand. The norm out west is to quad three days up the side of a mountain and stalk for a week. I understand how you have no comprehension of doing so but in my first hunting trip following my technique and I have come up on some trophy that half of you can only dream upon and this isnt even in Northern Ontario, if 80% of the hunters are hunting in Southern Ontario it makes sense to go deeper where no one else is going... The is a difference between hunting and baiting. All I am saying, putting corn in a feeder once a week for 4 months is not hunting.

Wonder where this 10-20 km wide roadless expanse of wilderness in the Kinmount area could be? I hunted the area for years and if there was such a tract, I probably would have checked it out. Do you walk in circles Don? A compass or GPS could considerably shorten your walk. Maybe you walk in from Minden or Bobcaygeon?

I said I have a lease on a trap line here in Toronto and have been working it for 2 years, this being my 3rd. This is my first hunting season in Ontario as I have been going back out west. You probably dont know how trapping works but Bear season doesnt quit coincide with trapping season. Why would I drive 10 hours north to hunt when I can do it right here. On the opposite, I need to drive 10 hours to trap because I cant do it down here. Like hell man, use your head before you reply

I dont understand why some of you are bring so hard on Don?? He's not the first person to say they have seen a cougar in Ontario and the MNR admits they are here. Maybe he does hunt differently than most but so what. May have been better for Don to word it differently, could have come across as an insult to some. If it was meant that way, then never mind.

Griz is being hard on himself. His first post basically was mocking others who perhaps hunt a bit different than he does (or say's he does?). There was no "Hello, my name is Don and I have a problem", or howdy doody, or anything else. His follow up posts still didn't offer much in the way of admiting or owning up to his shortcomings? We're trying to help him actually and I might add, having fun doing it! :D

Actually they do the MNR suspect there is a main corridor that actually goes from Kingston are to Northern Ontario. Many of the sightings have been in the Ottawa Valley.

as well most on here are well aware that the cougar does exist but in very small numbers I suspect many on here probably took offense to you because you came on here as your first post pretty much insulting anyone and everyone.

Well you could re-post the 'original' trail cam pic, use a little photoshop/MS paint (whatever) to black out only the GPS numbers instead of cropping and leave the other data and that would satisfy some of the skeptics.

As an aside..what models of Trail cams put the GPS co-ordinate on the pic itself ? I know some trail cams has GPS for geotracking them, but wasn't aware they put the info 'on' the pic, usually just inside the meta data ?

Hiking 10 to 20 km with a rabbit in your pocket. That means 10 to 20 km back with a bear on your back since that's where all the good game is. Oh by the way where is the picture to that bear you where hunting? Good story however credible? Too hard to swallow.

I would like to point out that using a live rabbit as bait/decoy by cutting it to make it bleed or injuring it to make it squeal, whether captive or a wild rabbit is a Criminal Offence. I'm not accusing someone on the forum of anything but simply adding this in case there are any hunters reading this that think this would be a great idea. Negative.

I think the hunting trip in question more likely occurred in grandma's basement.

Using a Quad??? Your a wimp glad to see you admit it. My Uncles and grandfathers didn't have a quad nor do I when I was younger.

I believe it's entirely possible that cougars are in Ontario, or more accurately I am not so arrogant to proclaim that they can't be here because I've never seen one....

I'm just not sure about the beaver dam perched on a steep hillside....😜
