Legend boat - trapped water under the main deck

Hi,

I purchased an one year old boat, a 2012 Legend 16 Xtreme with a Merc 60HP, 4 stroke. The boat is rated for 75HP
I am satisfied with the boat, no problems planning with 3 people on board.

When they build the Legends 16' and plus they inject foam under the marine plywood deck. When I washed the deck for the first time or when it rained I observed water gets trapped under the main deck and it never reaches the bottom of the hull. There are some pockets created by the injected foam where the water sits until the boat leans toward the port or the starboard. At that time the water comes out from the battery compartment or the other storage box.

I am wondering if anyone else encountered this one and if you know what I should do? Is this a manufacture defect?
I transferred the warranty and after paying a $300 transfer fee Legend sent me a letter that I am entitled to "some warranty coverage."

I would contact Legend and explain the dilemma and design flaw. I would suspect there's some rotting going on there. After a while even the foam gets water logged, then it doesn't float anymore.

At the beginning I suspected a malfunctioning bilge pump or even a leak. I flooded the boat to eliminate these and I have no leak and the bilge pump works.

$300 warranty transfer? I'd call them tell them the deal, if they don't help you, which I wouldn't be surprised.


Pull up floor, cut channels in foam to allow drainage. You won't remove enough to matter or compromise structure.


My Tracker did something similar. I think foam under the floor isn't the best idea, would rather see them build better stringers to support the floors and allow better drainage. I know lots of good boat brands use foam in the floor (if not all), but they must be doing things better than these guys...

And the foam isn't doing anything until you sink the boat. Even than, we pay insurance for a reason.

We might have a solution for your issue. We be more than happy to help you out and get you back on the water as soon as possible. Pretty much all manufactures are going with foam injection. This not only helps you if for any reason the boat sinks it will still float. It also gives boats a higher horsepower rating for customers that would like that option and creates a smoother ride in an aluminum boat. Insurance is great to have if your around to collect it...

I got an answer from the Head Quarters trying to explain me this behavior is normal...
Last time I went fishing I noticed I got some overflowed water from the live well. All this water got trapped again and later on got released back on my main deck instead of going to the bilge area. It's tough when you may have a bag with dry cloths and a photo camera on the floor.

At the end of the season I took my boat to the Barrie dealer and after keeping it for 6 weeks they told me it cannot be done. I called them back as I wasn't happy with the answer and a day later I got a call, the problem was "fixed". They asked me how I saw the water trapped? By removing the seat bases.
The only thing I noticed - more foam was injected.
I have to try it this year but 30" of ice on Simcoe ... we may need to wait till May.
I will make sure the live well will be full a bit over 1/2 of it to avoid the over flowing water.

So if ya can't fix it, get a bigger hammer. Maybe slightly less room for the water to accumulate, but undoubtedly still room for water to remain trapped and cause rot and mold.

I had a Legend before, never will I get sucked into a piece of junk like that again.

My friends 2012 Legend is the same. The company has done a terrible job sealing the ubolts on the stern and bow.
I'm talking gallons of water in an 18ft boat. He marine siliconed the boat. It did the job. But he shouldn't have had to do that.

I suggest you sit down with a cup of coffee and review the conditions of the warranty, it is a contract and therefore enforcable. You will need to determine the conditions of the transfer, and use that document as your basis for discussion with the manufacturer.

On a side note, my 20 year old boat just started taking on rain water in the hull which leaked down past some fittings when I had the roof off. I fixed this by applying a single layer of fibreglass and epoxy over the entire deck.

I have a fiberglass boat that is probably 40 years old that seems to have the same problem. The past owner claimed that it got "sluggish" after a rain?????
Turns out that the floor is full of old screw holes and fitting spots that let the rain get between the floor and the hull. Due to design this water will only drain back to the sump when the boat is heeled over somewhat. After the snow goes I plan to do a bit of redesigning....

No disrespect intended, but I'd have to disagree here. Speak with anyone who's dealt with Henry (and half the staff at the Barrie location), myself included, and they'll likely tell you he's more interested in the buyer being happy than making the sale - even if it means you buy at the competitor. He encouraged me to check out all of the brands before I bought my used Legend last summer, and answered all of my questions thoroughly - and is still available whenever i need something.

I went with the 'peice of junk' because the quality was quite a bit better than the Legend of yesteryear, and it got me the most bang for my buck at the time. Nothing but good things to say.

Seems like the OP took the boat in, and they tried a solution.... Until he runs the boat this year, we wont know if its truly fixed....don't plan the lynching just yet...

Just a word of caution. Someone mentioned cutting into the foam. Don't do this. Depending the type of foam used, water can get in and waterlog it. You also alter the floatation of the boat and yes I know it only helps keep the boat from sinking but it is a very important safety aspect of the boat. If you ever get in that situation, you will appreciate your craft being there to hang on to!

The problem is in the name.... "Legend"

I agree, I have had a Legend for a few years now and I found the staff at the Barrie Dealership to be Great, from the moment I picked up the boat to any thing else I have needed. I had to take it in to fix up the weather top, as we had messed it up somehow, and they were great, got it right in and fixed up! and last year after racoons destroyed the interior, I took it right back to Barrie and they did a great job, and got it done fast so I was back out on the water.

I am still having the same issue. I never fill up the live well more than half and last weekend when I had 4 people in the boat I got my feet wet again. The boat was leaning to port side when lots of water came from the battery compartment.

As this never happened when the live well was dry, I am wondering if the live well pump and plumbing is leaking?!? Anybody heard of this one before?

Check your plumbing,I have the same issue of water showing up,and no holes in the boat...I checked the drain hose from the livewell,and it was good,now I'm thinking the hose from the aerator to the livewell is the culprit,I'll know this weekend

As I suspected I may have a leak from the livewell pump or plumbing I did the following test. I removed the aerator strainer and I hooked up the garden hose. I shut off the the livewell valve, I turned on the water and I left the hose under the pressure.
As I had no leak but I could still see a wet spot under the livewell the only explanation I have now is the water overflowing from the livewell gets trapped as I mentioned before and it's not reaching the boat hull, the bilge pump. The only way for that trapped water to get released is only when the boat leans to port or starboard.

Same thing happened to a friend of mine on a Legend Xterminator with a front live well.
This is the conclusion I got.

Hey I read your post on another message board, I have a mirrocraft with two live wells and have no issues with the front live well, I read that you won't buy a boat with one up front again, if mine does leak out the top which only happens if it's full to the top and rough as hell it simply flows on the vinyl floor to the bilge pump, no restrictions what so ever, I read your past posts about the issue and would park the boat in front of their showroom doors and leave it there till they fixed it and if nothing happens park it on the road in front with a banner that's states that they don't stand behind their product, every other person in this country of ours seems to protest every thing why not you!

Legend Excalibur 2009 , 90hp + 10 hp
Searching different Boat Forums I did not find anything that had to do with my Legend cruising problem.
I purchased my 2009 Legend Excalibur 18’ last year. The 90 hp motor had 41 hours, the boat was impeccable.
But it's never a good idea to buy a boat in the winter. I had to wait until spring to try it on a lake.
What I discovered discouraged me : I could not keep the boat going straight at trolling speed.
At (+ or -) 5 mph I have to keep a hand on the helm and constantly make corrections. It wanders about left and right even in calm water alone or with passengers it behaves the same way.
At high speed it is ok.
I cannot figure out what causes this drift : the motor or the keel ?
Your suggestions would be appreciated.

Hey Noiro - assuming there's no play in your steering at cruising speed, wandering left to right at low speeds is pretty normal behavious for V hulled boats....there's a term for it which escapes me, but it's not unique to your boat - look further ahead, and make the corrections or just let it waffle back and forth if you're not in close quarters. A quick google search should give you some confidence on that - apparently 'smart-tabs' can help, but usually it's just a matter of keeping your corrections small and get out on the water more often to get used to it.

It's something I never notice with my tiller, but drives me crazy too when I grab the wheel in console driven boats.

About the only positive thing I can say about Legend boats is that they have a really good sales team.

Enough said.

Spend a little more time researching and you can buy a much better built and designed boat for the same or a little bit more money.

My steering is not hydraulic if it is I would have seen tubings or pipes in the walls, they are cables, i feel no play.

it is recommended to put an antifreeze agent in the live wells drain holes before winter storage, otherwise water is left in the pipes will crack them and next spring lake water will seep in your hull.

Are you guys saying the friendly team at Legend hasn't taken care of your problems? Can't be, hey Henry, where are you?

Hey Noiro, Do apologize for the lateness of my reply. Work has me busy with the new 2015 product launch. What your experience is actually completely normal and called "HUNTING". Any V-hull will require constant steering correction, this is because of the centre keel. Wind, current and outboard angle will effect which direction your boat is pointed in. It happens all the time when driving a car, The pull of one wheel from the transmission directing power to that wheel, the wind and bumps in the pavement will redirect your vehicle direction. Constant correction is needed to stay on course.

Callatis: Has your issue been resolved? I sometimes get water trickling down my livewell as well. But it's human error, I sometimes forget to turn off the pump lol or with full livewell running across chop will trickle water down the sides. Does it do it with an empty livewell?

My brother in law had that problem. Legend ran the livewell pipes throughout the boat causing goosenecks everywhere. Because of this, water cannot be drained properly. The pipes froze over winter causing the pipes to crack. This poor design is hard to fix. This means removing the decking. Luckily he found the problem. Legends aren't bad boats. I prefer other makes. It's like travel trailers.
You get what you pay for.

For the ordinary week end fisherman,like me,Legend Boats give plenty of bang for the buck. One of my fishing partners rigged a nozzle up to blow the live well and bilge lines out with a shop vac,then,filled them with RV anti-freeze. It worked like a charm.

Thanks everyone for their input! It looks like many boats with a front livewell have the same issue. The water overflowing from the livewell gets trapped under the main deck. Few boaters suggested applying either silicone or a rubber trim around the edge of the livewell to prevent getting trough.

I used clear silicone this spring and I got less water under the deck.
