My wife gave me the go ahead for a boat BUT she wants input on it before I purchase - so I can rule out my Lowe Jon boat with 40Hp tiller (all in camo):sad:
But she does have a point......looking for something that I can take her and my 2 daughters on and have some room. Be able to fish from it, tow it easy, but be large enough to tube or board behind - Skiing would be a nice bonus!!
Any ideas as to what I should be looking at? I was thinking 16' side console with a 40Hp or should I go larger??

"I owe, I owe, it's off to work I go..."j/k. I wouldn't go smaller than a 40, preferable a 50. Check marinas on line for used boats, you might find a deal. Just beware that most fishing boats are not set up to tow tubers or skiers, fish and ski models are.

I own a 16' and it's fine for two, when there are more peoples in the boat I wish I had a bigger one. But at the end it all depends on the $$$$. A 90HP on a 17.5' is good but a 150hp on the same boat is better.....
Very nice, I love boat shopping! The first thing you need to establish is a price limit, next is are you gonna go new or used. You say you gonna use boat for just more then fishing and this was the same reason I went from glass bass boat to tin rig. A 16 footer with a 40 or 50 is just fine for fishing but add the wife and 2 kids and a friend or two and you gonna have some trouble pulling a skier. Tubing will be fine, but don't forget the stress on the motor and transom. If you wanna stay in a 16 footer I would go we larger 16ft model that can take a 90 like a princecraft. I have 17.5 ft crestliner with 115 and if I load my boat with 2 adults and two kids I can feel the motor struggling.
Just a few words of advice from someone who has made these mistakes in the past and lost money; don't buy a cheap make, they are cheaper for a reason and you will regret the purchase; max out the horse power and max out the trolling motor. Things like graphs, radios etc you can add on over the winter.

i gotta agree with jtracc... max out on the power... i know more than a couple people who are on there second motors (nothing damaged just needed the power upgrade) and they all said the same thing... why didn't i do this in the first place!! I recommend at least a 17.5 foot boat and if you plan to have 4 people in the boat and do some tubing, I wouldn't purchase anything less than a 115hp motor.
I was in your exact position 10 years ago and bought a 16ft Sylvan Profisher with a 40 merc. Great on gas and very reliable. Now that the kids have grown 10 years it is marginal power wise so I would recommend a 60 or 70. I don't use it enough anymore to justify an upgrade so it will have to keep on serving me well for now.
I bought a 16 ft with a 40 4 stroke,it was great at first til the kids wanted to tube and ski,and all 3 kids and wife and dog were on board for a fishing outing. I ended up upgrading to a 70 4 stroke and what a difference,no complaints at all now fishing or tubing,lots of power and lots of room for everybody.Go with at least a 70hp or more on a 16 ft.
For a first boat I would think that 16' with about 40-50 hp should be fine for a young family. I used a 14' with a 25 for many years, even on Simcoe and while it was crowded with 4 adults plus gear, it was fine to take the kids out or for two to fish from.
I always suggest that you not go overboard with a first purchase until you get some experience in what YOU want from a boat. You can tie up a lot of money but get turned off because of a bad choice in hull design, wheel placement, interior layout etc. There are a lot of good deals out there in used equipment if you have an impartial experienced buddy to assess them.
if you want a boat that can tow preety much anything behind it get a sea-doo, have never seen anything on the water that can outdo a sea-doo, i have a sea-doo with twin rotax engines 170 horsepower on each engine, it is very goos on gas, i never fill up more then 2 tanks a year, and have sometimes up to 150 litres leftover! it is ok for fishing, i mean it certainly is comfortable, its no bass-boat, but you can lay down and relax and fish or sit stand, preety much anything, it has high sides, so big waves arent a problem, pricy but well worth it IMO, you can get from one side of the lake to another at a moments notice, i have never seen a boat that is better built or faster, and probably will not see one anytime soon, this is my 4th sea-doo first i had a 1999 sea-doo sporster fits 7 people and goes FAST, the dude i sold it to, saids it is still in perfect condition! it is well built and from very good materials, this one is my biggest sea-doo so far, i suggest getting something bigger and slower, maybe 19 ft mine right now is 18 feet, the 19 footers come with one engine at 150, its a smaller engine, and less dangerous, well at least for a sea-doo.
Are you planning on hunting out of it?
If your going to hunt, fish, and do family time, you need a deep V aluminum. Duck hunting is hard on equipment, so try not to go too fancy, or you'll just destroy it.
An 18ft alaskan, or a starcraft freedom would be a great set up for ya. Max the power and get all the goodies you want now, because you'll just pay more later.
I have a 16 ft starcraft, and although its a great hunting/fishing rig, its not so great at tubing or pulling skiers around. You really need to think about what the boat will be used for most........and how much you want to spend.

i dont think his family will enjoy riding in an 18 ft alaskan lund or starcraft lol! doesnt go too fast, not too comfy and you wont be able to pull anything behind yourself, great for hunting, cant say the same for fishing or tubing.Quote:

It's pretty hard to get the best of both worlds, unless you go to something like a Lund Crossover or a Stratos 474 or 484. I've personally looked at both of these boats, but be ready for the sticker shock. As far as ski-doo boats, 2 guys I worked with in Sault Ste. Marie had them and this is what they told. Don't drive where there are weeds, the water intake gets clogged and if they work their way into the pump - look out. Periodically, pump seals need to be replaced and from what they told me these boats suck the gas. Definitely not what you want for hunting and fishing.
I have to agree with sinker and there's nothing wrong with an Alaskan for fishing, it has a similar layout to my Explorer. Pat has also made a good point about motor size, my brother easily pulls his 12 year old son and 17 year old daughter behind my old 15' Princecraft with a 20 HP Yamaha 2 stroke.
For skiing and tubing, boat design and weight has as much to do with it as motor size. My dad learned to ski behind a plywood boat with a 25 HP motor. He was taught by the late Brig. General Denny Whittaker, who himself was a former waterski champion. We learned to waterski behind a 1972 40 HP Evinrude. When waterskiing, you only should have 2 people in the boat, the driver and a spotter which is the minimum required by law. This also lightens to load which helps to get the skier out of the water faster.

I fished out of the Peterborough for years as it was my only boat, but it was really a skiing/cruising boat. I have given it to my 17 year old daughter as of this year because she finally got her boater's license.
Bottom line is, you'll pay a substantial amount to get a boat that will do everything, or pick something that will best suit the majority of your needs now.

No, not the most comfortable boat, but not uncomfortable either. Any of the aluminum boats will be the same. I'd kill a sea-doo in a season just hunting from it, and I just can't see me fishing From a sea-doo. I hate those things!!!!Quote:

I've had a few boats, been operating them since I was a kid, and my 16ft deep and wide with a 40hp is by far the most versitile I've had. Great for fishing, great for hunting, and I can take my two kids and 100lb lab with me, no problem. It will pull the kids around all day long, but its not the most glamourous boat on the lake. I can use it fron ice out until freeze up with no problems, and its very easy to tow around. Burns very little gas too. Easy to maintain........the list goes on.

if you get a new sea-doo, there is a special handle you pull if the intake gets clogged, i have been through some preety tough weeds on rice lake and cameron lake, and only had to pull the handle 2 times max. on the other hand an engine with a propeller, will get weeds around it in no time, and youll have to go for a swim. I have had lots of sea-doos have never been in an accident, all the boats i sold, i keep in-touch with the people who bought it and all are in perfect condition, if i were to take my 1999 sea-doo sporster,i would still cream any boat on the water.

Even on the tiny outboards with no reverse, all you need to do is lift the prop above the water and gun it for a second. 99% of the weeds disappear.....
I guarantee I can get in places with my outboard that a jet boat can't.

i circled the whole lake, mostly around bewdley, mines is a 2013 model, the 08 models dont have the handle, plus you said they are ski-doo whitch are he water motorcycle, they dont have the handle at all, i got around easily, sometimes at speed like 140 up to 160, only got clogged ounce and when it gets clogged it beeps, then you just pull the handle, mine is also custom.Quote:

i have a 16 foot aluminium and a twin rotax jet boat, the jet boat, can outdo any boat on the water, i have never gotten stuck, you have to understand how a rotaz engine works, it blows in water then blows it out and pushes the boat, even if it does get clogged the boat will still go full speed, it will just beep, but an easy way to unclog it, you dont even have to shut the engine off, pull the handle and give it some gas, and youre good as new! id like to see your aluminium boat, circle rice lake in minutes! how about fast current? how about breaking ice? on my boat i can easily break ice in the winter, ive gone off bbp in late november for whities on it, but then again i dont believe in hunting from a boat, i dont really like hunting small stuff like waterfowl, but when i do, i do it in a marsh from shore in cover, or put my waders on, i can easily troll for salmon, trout, pike, walleye, its much better then a trolling motor, because you dont have to put it down and up every time, you just shut one engine off, and troll with only one engine at about 3.5 miles, it can go slower, and can certaintly go faster, i do alot of trolling on lake ontario with it for trout and salmon, not ounce have i ever been skunked or had any trouble/problems. it is expensive to fix, but if you know anything about these engines, you just have to take care of them, just like any other engine, it is very expensive, but well worth it, and the 2012, 2013, 2014 models are all good on gas, much better then an outboard, and i have a nitro Z-8 bass boat, that i use strictly for bass pike and water that doesnt have much waves, ad let me tell you that thing sucks gas like its a candy, the sea-doo on the other hand is much better, not everyone can afford it, but it is an awesome boat, the guys at sea-doo i have a few friends that work in sea-do0 and a couple in bombardier motorcraft corporation, and they have sea-doos and fish alot from them, some even hunt from them, i wouldnt go as far as hunting from such an expensive boat, but fishing especially trolling for big pike, no problems at all, im not sure how much you know about sea-doos or any other bombardier motored vehicles, but i suggest you do some research, before you type.
I personally think the seadoo boats look extremely UGLY with the high sides and the rest of the stupid lay out. I think those boats are a useless as chain saw without a chain. They try to make them do everything a boater would want but they dont. There is a lot of all purpose fishing boats on the market. Even the new Larson fx fishing boats can come equipped to tow skiers and tubers and they are nice boats. It's good to come on here and ask for suggestions on boats but you have to actually put the time in go look at dozens of boats then pick the best one for your needs.
I thought the 18' footers had the smaller tanks? Just curious how you end up with 150 liters left over after a season and only filling up twice? I know a few people who have a 2012 20' and 2011 18' on my lake. They haul for sure but I am not so sure about them sipping fuel as you say, unless you just troll 3.5 mph all the time.Quote:

Went with a 1650 Lund Rebel XL with single side console and a 75hp 4 stroke. Get's me fishing when I want and I've got it rigged for Lake O Salmon, just have to pick my days. We've had myself, wife and 3 kids between the ages of 6 - 11 in the boat and had them zipping around on the tube no problem. We've had 2 adults, 1 kid in the boat and myself and my 6 year old on the tube, and we were doing a pretty good clip on the tube without any issues that I could tell. We're going to try waterskiing next year - my boys aged 6 and 9 should be fine with me and my wife in the boat, but having an adult male get up with myself and a spotter in the boat may be a little tougher.
All in all, the boat has worked out nicely. I just have to find a nice cushion for my wife so she can read while leaning on the front of the console - (cramps my space fishing off the bow though .... )

Guys.......first off I am not interested in a jet boat. Not suited to what I want to do - plus what do you do with a glass boat when you want to go for a shore lunch on a rocky shoal? With an aluminum you can gently set it on the rocks and not worry about it. My buddy has an outboard jet drive on a jon boat and it is a great boat until you get in the weeds then the intake gets clogged and the water stops flowing (you risk seizing the motor) - then you have to stop the motor take off your hunting jacket and pull the weeds from the intake - NOT fun in November!!
I want a general aluminum utility boat (no carpet flat floor with walk through benches) that I can hunt and fish from BUT be large enough to pull a tube, boarder or knee boarder. Does not have to be the fastest thing on the lake. I am not sure if a deep and wide 16' - 16'6" with a 20-30Hp tiller would do or a 16'6-18' side console with a 40-60-7Hp would be better suited. I am going fishing this weekend and will try and take a couple of boats for a ride and see what I like.
I am in no rush to buy and want to make sure I get a good quality boat that suits my needs.
I'll be at the boat show and the Sportsman Show - but I am also going to look in the US to see what I can find. I hear there are some great deals down there.Quote:

Things to consider;

Eventually they will want to. Under 16 with a boater's license, they are only allowed to drive up to a 40 HP. 2. Remote steering vs. tiller
When you get into the larger motors (ie. 40 HP) there's a little more to handling them than a 9.9. Remote steering is far easier to handle which is why my daughter drives the Peterborough and not the Lund.
3. Power tilt and trim vs. manual.
The 40 HP Honda has power tilt & trim, the 50 HP Evinrude has manual. The Honda weighs 225 lbs., the Evinrude weighs 185 lbs. The Honda wins this battle.
4. 2 stroke vs. 4 stroke
The Evinrude (2 stroke) is lighter and has a better hole shot than the Honda. The Honda trolls better, uses less gas and there is no fuel mixing required although with oil injection this has been eliminated. The 2 stroke is better for water skiing and tubing, the 4 stroke is better for hunting and fishing. You can still waterski and tube behind a 4 stroke, but for skiing a 2 stroke will get you out of the water faster.
These are just a few of my personal observations from owning 2 completely different types of boats and having a daughter want to drive a boat. These are just considerations to look at before you make your purchase.

Hey Congratulations on the approval to get a boat. I see that your on the right track to get something that both you and the family can use. Now is a great time to get your research done and start to narrow down something that you can see yourself in for 5-10 years down the road. Once you have figured out layout Tiller, Side Console or Full Windshield.
The next important thing would be horsepower and manufacture. I would recommend you choose the right horsepower for your needs. If it involves skiing/wake boarding or some sort of sport. Having a horsepower that's close to 80% of what the boat is rating for is the way to go. Choosing an outboard manufacture that has been around for a long time is great but also ensure they have a service centre close to where you are is very important for quicker turnaround.

Don't know if there is a local Power Squadron in your area but I would try to sign up for a seamanship/navigation/marine course over the winter and start looking at used boats in the early spring. Being on Lake O, you will have open water much earlier than most so you will be able to try your new boat sooner. Buy something within your budget, get the wife out and make sure she enjoys herself. You can always trade up in a year or two when you both decide what you want...
We have the Sylvan 22 ft pontoon with 150 Yamaha with a ski bar. Kids fish from the sides in safety, tube at 28mph haven't tried waterskies yet. Tons of room seats 13, tons of storage, lots of room for coolers for all day outing. No cramped walking around, lots of room. Gets in the same depth of the 14ft'ers on our lake, bass, pan fish. Ride out in the St Lawerance without porposing like the small 16ft. Full out 35 mph, but sucks huge amount of gas, keep it thottled back to 4100 rpm (20mph) and get about 6-8 hours of crusing time for 100L. 14 ft bimini top, can lay down, jump off the sides. Might not be pretty or fast but meets all our needs and is fun. Use more gas pulling down the road with my F250 than loaded dump trailer.
a 16 with a 75 should do you....a 50 hp will pull a tube but you would be running close to wide open all the time
I have three pieces of advice:
1) Stay away from Legend Boats. The underprice and underpower their boats. By the time you add the engine upgrade and the "options" that many times are standard equipment on other brands, you are usually close to doubling the sticker price.
I bought a 16' Crestliner aluminum with a 1200# trailer and 25HP Johnson triple for less money than the Legend dealer was going to sell me once I priced out my "options". The Legend trailer was also rated for 900# and the winch was 300-500 # range. My boat alone weighs 350, plus another 150 for the engine, plus battery, fuel, tackle, etc. That would have maxed out the trailer axle and the winch would not be able to handle it either.
2) Size your engine to at LEAST 75% of the rated horsepower on the transom sticker. Mine was rated for 40 and I went with a 25. It is fine with me and a partner, but add a few more people and it struggles.
3) STAY AWAY FROM LEGEND!!!!
Last point if you’re going out on Lake Ontario, get the biggest boat possible. Been out there with our 22ft Pontoon Boat and my brother following in 16ft Lund Rebel with 50 2 stroke. His boat was porposing all over the place, and really made the ride wavy. Even on the St Lawrence around Mallorytown, it is rough for 16ft boats. You should consider length and Beam size if your gonna be L.O.
Well after a bit of a set-back (I was laid off in December) I am back looking for my fishing boat. Going to take this opportunity to buy the one I want. The typical fishing I do is anything from perching in Erie, bass/pickerel fishing up north, chasing pickerel on the Detroit River. I want something big enough to pull my daughters on a knee board or a small tube and seat 5 (will not be boarding/tubing with 5 people at the same time), but not so big that it is difficult to store or tow around. Boat must have a flat floor and initially I wanted a tiller but now I am town between SC and a tiller - a 25Hp 4 stroke is a big engine and I will need power tilt/trim anyway.
I went to the TO boat show (cuz that is what you do when your unemployed I guess - LOL) but this is not the show to be looking at these kinds of boats. I will be at the Sportsman Show and probably the Hamilton boat show as well.

I have looked at a few Legends but to be honest (not knocking anyone that has one) but they do not seem as rigid as the ones listed above - thinner gunnels (I can actually flex them if I lean into them hard), and most of hte used ones I see are under powered for what I am looking for. I guess a lot of people buying them are just using them for fishing.
I think you should go with the Lund... Love my 17.75 pro v...

Well I am now back at it......looking for a boat that is. I had an unfortunate turn of events that worked out really well in my favor. The company that I was working for had a re-org in Jan and I was one of the people effected (with about 60% of the sales and marketing staff). The severance package was very handsome (I was there for 13 years)......and I landed a great job at one the competitors rather quickly - my first day is March 10th. So needless to say the experience was quite unfortunate but I did make out like a bandit. So with that being said I am back looking for a boat!!
I went to the boat show and the sportsman show while I was off and have narrowed it down to:
14ft or 16ft Lund Fury with 30Hp tiller (new boat and off lease motor)
16ft Princecraft Starfish DLX with 40Hp (SC) - used boat and motor
16ft Crestliner Canadian SC c/w 40Hp 4 stroke - used boat and motor
I am leaning towards a used well equipped boat now that I have priced up all the 'accessories' required with a new boat - electronics, seats, trolling motor, cover, ect., PLUS the freight and PDI they try to stick me with on a new boat is excessive in my eyes.
Starting to see more boats come up on Kijiji and AutoTrader. Are there any other sites that I should be looking at?

These are all dealers, but they get a variety of used boats in. I bought my Lund used from Gateway and got a pretty good deal. They are actually a Crestliner dealer.
Check all of these sites for used boats as they are constantly getting trade-ins, but when you see what you want, you have to act fast.

Well I finally pulled the trigger on a boat. I bought a 2008 Sylvan Explorer 16 with a 40Hp 4 stroke. It is in mint condition and comes with bow mounted trolling motor, basic fish finder (will upgrade later), 3 seats, cover and everything to get me on the water.
