bird release permit

I received a letter from MNR - they're simplifying bird release process.
As of Jan 2014 you can release up to 10 pheasants or chukars on your private property w/o permit.
10 is a season limit. All other rules and regs apply.
You can keep pheasants in captivity up to 10 days w/o a license.

That's the gist of it. May be it belongs in Upland section :) mostly dog people do it, I think

This is the list of game birds that MNR issues these permits for –

Bobwhite, Northern

Grouse, Ruffed

Grouse, Sharp-tailed

Grouse, Spruce

Partridge, Gray (Hungarian)

Pheasant, Ring-necked

Ptarmigan, Rock

Ptarmigan, Willow

We also issue the same authorization for varying hare and cottontail.
Please ensure that you check your Hunting Regulations for the closed seasons for all of the above.

For any other birds you should contact the Canadian Wildlife Services. Here is a phone number I was able to locate 905-336-4464.

Living in the city , I only keep pigeons( local bylaws apply). One escapes every once in a while and a neighbor will come down and say , "Your pigeon is pooping all over my gazebo!"

I have bigger problems stalking escaped chukars with a fish net in suburbia ;)

They seem to escape from you out in the wilds too.......:cool:

When you could keep bw quail , I kept mine on the balcony in my apt. When they would escape, folks would say, " Look, there goes an exotic bird!"

Two summers ago I was visiting a friend in Richmond Hill (just north of Toronto) and excited neighbours were showing me a "bobwhite quail" hiding by the bus stop! I informed them that the bird was indeed a chukar and it had most likely escaped from captivity.
Maybe vom Dufenshmirtz would know something about that one?! :joker:

I love pigeons Sharon and wish I could keep a few where I live, but there are bylaws everywhere you go and we are regulated to the nines around here. :rolleyes:
Of course we now have coyotes running around Newmarket and God forbid if I shoot a .22 in town :scream:

Anyway.... We are planning to release a few birds next spring and see how they survive. More of a long term plan and thankfully the area has not many yotes yet.

The first time we used chakars a few were missed and one of my neighbours ask if we knew what the strange bird was that he had seem on the road. Of couse we knew. The chakars will return to the pen so we make sure there is always food down and a way for them to get back in but not out.

Well I kept quails in my garage for a couple of weeks, one got out and drowned in the neighbours pool, told her I didnt know what kind of bird that was!! oops.

I was thinking if adding some game birds to the list of poultry I have.. But I was under the impression I didn't need a permit fit quail? I have turkeys and chickens now.. (Just outside of Newmarket)

Bob white quail rules have changed big time over the last couple years . We can't use them in pointing breed field trials anymore. Game farms can use them. Check it out with the MNR

Can I raise them for food for myself?

Bob White is on the endangered species list, MNR don't allow to release them anymore. WRT keeping them, I don't think so, but ask MNR. There are couple other types of quail you can use for food (if that's what you really want ;) ) - Coturnix and Tennessee Red

Can't use them in training but I am pretty sure they can still be used in trials and on game farms.

Does this mean you can release them out of season then? (pheasants I mean) I thought you could always release them on your property for training or hunting as long as it was during the season and you only needed a permit to release them out of season.

Can't release bobwhite in ON at all. I'll try to find the letter from the MNR.

They are on the endangered species list; they don't want pen raised bobwhites mating with the few wild bobwhites that are left.(As if they could find each other :-) )

Since when? They used quail at the Reg 13 last spring.

Then there has been an exception made for the OBDCA. For my own interest I am going to look into it. I release birds off and on to keep my old girls fresh , and would much prefer quail to chukar for cost reasons. If they can release bobwhites then the rest of us should be able to. :)

Region 13 covers a large amount of Michigan. Maybe you mean the USA part of Region 13 Eric?

Well last time I checked a pheasant was an Asian bird and not truly native typical MNR rules with there head up there butts.

One does not need a permit to keep them in captivity.
Interestingly enough this thread highlights the mess of ON regulations wrt bird release. it's very hard to understand.

Absolutely right on. I guess one needs to check the regulations 3 times a year.

These are the regulations re buying and captivity as of June 2013 + now we need to add on vomD's extra info in post one.

Just heard from the MNR . Pretty unbelievable. You can purchase and release bob white quail on your own Private Property ONLY.... You need a Field trial permit to release on your own property.OBDCA is exempt on the private property part but still needs a field trial permit.

Only private property I have is my back yard ,so I won't be releasing bob whites. :)

Chukar is not considered a game bird and no permit is required.(See list of gamebirds in the link.)

Even within MNR they have no clue, LOL
I obtained chukar release permit multiple times as it was required by MNR.

He said only the birds listed in the game bird link. Seemed to depend on who you talk to I guess. :)

I don't see chukar on that list? I would print it and keep it with me if I was even thinking about releasing chukar

Leon can you tell me where do you apply for the permit? I trying to find out but no luck. Last week I had a chance to spoke with an MNR officer, even he couldn't tell me.

10 birds per year? not enforceable, IMO :)

Call the MNR office your WMU falls into and ask who deals with
Application for an Authorization to Conduct Field Trials and Training During the Closed Season

If you have a private property to train on. Up to 10 birds/year. Some of us have to use public land.

I know a few people who release a lot more than ten every year. Next to impossible to enforce.

Hmmm.....coturnix and Tennessee Red? T. Reds are still a Bobwhite with a red colour faze.

With the cutbacks taking place at MNR in April I don't know how they will enforce any regulations.
I just hope everyone will follow the rules regardless of whether there's an enforcer hiding behind every tree or not. It's called integrity

So to clarify if anyone can. If I don't own a property but have permission to use it as a training spot can I release birds on that field or place birds in that field for a put to take purpose?

I would think private property refers to your own or a friend's private property.

I'm a rule follower - 20 years working at the jail- but when it comes to bird releasing I do what seems reasonable, because the rules are so hard to find . Even the CO's don't seem to know the rules for "releasing birds for training purposes". I'm not going to be releasing birds in the neighbourhood park , but a friend's private country property , where shooting is permitted, seems perfectly reasonable.

How I read it technicallay the owner of the property would have to release the birds and invite you to training/ hunt them.

If they are not considered a game bird, then there is no closed season, right? And if one can release as many as you want, you could technically hunt them all year round (or as long as your supplies last), correct? By the way, would you need a valid small game licence? (just wondering as there are rules that invalidate the licence during the summer for parts of cottage country)

This is the original post , so your post sounds right to me , but I won't give any advice on this subject as the rules can't seem to be found and COs can't give me info . I do what I think is reasonable and can defend if necessary.
