Just got my new outdoor card in the mail today, and is it ever UGLY! http://www.oodmag.com/community/images/icons/icon13.png
So much for the nice fish or wildlife images we used to have that I always kept as collector momentos.
The new one is just an ugly combination of green lines and a brown that looks like swamp muck.

Got mine yesterday as well, did the internet registartion thing on 13 Dec 2013...Not bad. I agree the old cards looked better.
I never liked the turkey picture, because I don't have a T card... why of all our fine feathered finned and furry friends must my card highlight the only one it DOESN'T entitle me to pursue? Also they're just standing there looking like they hate the cold, not very "get outdoors"y.
Anyway what bothered me more was the switch from license stickers to separate slips of paper, which I got around now by doing the 3-year fishing and small game license renewal. As others have said I don't care about the aesthetics of a card that just sits in my wallet. Although, since they still run the kids' fish art contest for the "young angler's license" whatever that is, why not put the kiddies' pictures on the actual outdoors cards, just to sweeten the prize a bit?
I forgot to buy 3 year fishing when I renewed so now when i buy it I have to carry a piece of paper for 3 years??? Why not keep with what works????
I never got anything in the mail saying my card expired. They really have cluster mucked this up. Thank the Liberal's for this. My friend got his new card last year. Talk about welfare looking.

When the govt pays an artist, they pay a flat rate for an artwork or photo regardless if that image is commissioned directly from the artist or if it comes from a stock art or photo supplier. That flat rate includes the artist giving up their copyright which means the government can reuse that image on anything they want, whenever they want, for as long as they want. As long as they have a competent graphic designer (or even a desktop publishing person) on staff, that image can be reused on anything they need it to be on. They are a local, tax paying, small business after all.
I think that would be a great idea (even though I have not seen these young angler cards but it sounds like a great idea). Of course, I bet people would then complain that the cards are too childish or not cool enough. Just no pleasing some folks.Quote:

The last Outdoors card featuring the turkey was selected (judged) through a competition much like the Federal Duck Stamp competition in the US. The subject of the image had to be the wild turkey and the image had to made at a certain size and proportion so that it would fit into the outdoors card format. I can't remember the exact details, but the award for the winner was not outrageous, especially considering the copyright was forfeited to the government to use however they wanted. This was an interesting way to be able to have numerous options to choose from for the card design and I wish they continued that.
Here is a mock up of the card design based on my entry in the competition. Obviously it did not win or you would have already seen it.

Aside from fantastic art, it would be almost an easier option to choose a photograph from the works of someone like our own JBen.

Granted we don't look at the card very often , but when I do I don't like what I see.
Here is the response that I received from the MNR . After I sent an email to Service Ontario ( who sent me the card and asked that any inquiries be sent to them ) of course pass the buck.
Question is how many of you asked for the card be changed because you couldn't read it ? Not me
And just how much did it save ? How does john Q public find out.

Thank you for your email.
The image on the Outdoors Card has been removed to enhance the visibility of the information on the card. This new appearance of Outdoors Card is much easier to read due to the high contrasting colours. Previously anglers, hunters and enforcement officers had difficulty reading the information on the Outdoors Card and requested a clearer appearance and design to support the primary purpose of the card as a legislated information document.
Additionally, there were significant costs associated with running card art competitions and printing artwork on the card. The cost savings to the province resulting from the decision to change the appearance of the card supports the 2012 Ontario Budget deficit elimination plan and will allow the MNR to focus funding on higher priority initiatives, such as invasive species monitoring and enforcement.

AH heck the girl at the Service Center chipped in for the 15 cents just because she liked my smile .:thumbup: I wouldn't want to make her mad now would I ? :D She even returned my old one after throwing it in the trash first, just as a wall hanger but with a strict warning never to show it while out in the field .
