2014 three shot challenge

Another new year is upon us. The Sun is shining and as far as a winter day goes, today is a good one. So let the 2014 THREE SHOT CHALLENGE commence.

The Rules
1. Target of your choice set out at 50 yds.
2. Your choice of muzzle loader / sight system.
3. No slings, sticks, sand bags or any support system. All shots to be fired Standing Off Hand.
4. Three shots only.
5. Post a picture of your target(s). Indicate your load. i.e. powder type / volume, bullet type / weight, etc
6 Have fun and make some smoke!!!:thumbup:

Not too shabby, Aaron! You just reminded me that I have some sabots to try with .44 cal 205 gr lead bullets.

HA...any reason you shot closer to the bull, with the same load, while free standing (over shooting from the bench) ??? ..LOL...

It is known as the "Wobble Effect". When everything comes together the "Wobble Effect" kicks it up a notch......but not always to the better.:whacked::moose:

Well I beat the path down yesterday when I was shooting the 45-70 so I figured I would take advantage of that and do something that I haven't done in a while.

So here's my entry for March.

Very good group, Aaron! You're setting the bar pretty high. And making me anxious to get out shooting.

When I read the post I looked outside then the snow was blowing sideways....not a day to be out shooting :)

Yes the bar is set pretty high...I'm way behind on my shooting with the spring being so late. I still want to work up a 12 ga load for Turkey at the end of the month....I may have to 'bite the bullet' and dig my range shack out of the snow and open it over snow covered fields...a first !!

I don't see a 4 inch group as setting the bar high fella's. Maybe something to trip over. :silly::moose:

Yes I will, but not all weekend. Haven't been to Marlborough in Month. Kitchen Reno done for now, just the floor left, but that can wait till fall. Wife is off thsi weekend so should have some free time. The business is not in a hurry with snow and frost. Haha, the trailer opens in Brockville in 31 days...lol ya right.

Well it's a gorgeous day out there today so I took advantage of it.

I've been putting up targets of my good, my bad and my ugly and I got to thinking that it might be interesting to video my 3 Shot Challenge. This way I would take my shot's live and I wouldn't be blowing smoke up anyone's.....well you know where.:silly:

So here it is.

My friend swears his ML shoots better with a 'fouled barrel' ...your results indicate that there might be something to it :)

I've always shoot at raised targets....3-4' off the ground....I wonder if it's easier to shot down onto a target ....have to try that this summer.

I have to get on the range this week to work up a BP Turkey load for my 12ga ML...if the weather holds I'll get the .45 out and do a submission to the 3 shot challenge...if I can hit the paper I'll be happy :)

The scary thing is I was shooting that muzzle loader better than I was shooting my 45-70 this morning.:scream: But.....in the 45-70's defence, I'm still working up a nice soft load for long range dinging. By that I mean 0-400 yds. I know with my other CB it'll shoot moa at 100 but with a much heavier load and that would be no fun for a target load.:sad: It is also scoped but the one this morning has a Soule Vernier style sight on it. It's a work in progress.

OK..stole a shepherds hook from the garden and an old 6" cast iron frying pan.....figured it would make a good Gong and save me walking back and forth to see where I hit, I'd know by sound.

Works... except I didn't hit very often..only 1 of 3 ...hahaha

Oh dam I'm torn. :sad: On one hand I want to say great idea with the pan.;) On the other hand, I love my cast iron pans and would never consider shooting at them.:scream: Even old rusty one's can be revived and put back into service.:thumbup:

As for the shooting, is that the hit splatter high on the pan? Well that isn't quite as bad as my Ugly were I went 0 for 3. :shy:

OK HA..I don't know why this took so much effort, but to pull the video off the 'Point and Shoot', get it into a proper format, then get it put on a depository to be able to post on here hurt my brain. Should be easier the second time.

Just a shorty clip of my 'hit' on the 'gong' at 5O yds free standing...keep your eye on the centre wood panel, you can just see the brown dot (frying pan)...take 1...LOL...

edit add: I pick up those cast iron pans at estate auctions for next to nothing....use them for the .22 :)

Yes HA, in the previous pic, the hole up at the top left (by the handle)..the bullet hit right on the seam of the side/bottom. Took out a fair sized chunk.

OK entry #2.....A little better shooting, hit it 2 out of 3. This is the 1st and 3rd shot, who knows where #2 went

I zoomed in on the gong a little closer this time to see the hit better, I only included one shot as the other shot is identical. I like how the rust makes cloud in impact.

addition ballistics info: Very tidy clean thru holes and I recovered one ball..very misshaped and you can see some of the rust fused to it.

It's a #11 cap.....

I have a friend who's dad has a huge collection of BP guns...I'm going to ask him if he would be willing to sell me a .45 flintlock..any suggestions as to a good plinking rifle ?

The way yours is zipping through that cast iron pan I'd say it's a little more capable than a plinker. lol I'm not too familiar with the virtues of other sidelocks other than the Lymans of which I have several. The TC's are good shooters too if you can find a used one.

APRIL 18th was the last post on here.... that's 4 months ago....summer months to boot...has no one has been out shooting and taken the challenge ??

I have a bunch off rusty old cast iron pans ready to go....time to get at it guess !!!!

It's been a busy summer for me. The thing with flintlocks is if you stop shooting them for a bit it's like starting all over when you start up again.

It's embarrasing isn't it. I had to sit and write out my load 'procedures' the last time becasue it was hard to remember what I had to remember. :)

Fellow Forum member "OilMan" wanted to try out my .270 Ruger No. 1 and my 6.5x55 Winchester Model 70 Featherweight before making his choice for a new rifle so I took advantage of the day to shoot my .50 cal Lyman Trade Rifle.

"Huntaway"'s use of sabots in an earlier post made me remember that I had some sabots I wanted to try. MMP green sabots for .44 cal bullets.

I used 70 grs of Pyrodex RS with the above mentioned sabots and my home cast 205 gr. lead bullets (for a .44-40). Distance was 50 of my paces (which was 55 yds according to a rangefinder).

The MMP sabot packaging says that with 70 grs of Pyrodex I would be getting @1500 fps. Nice target load - no recoil.

I'm afraid I broke your 3rd rule, Arron! I tried shooting offhand and I was all over the place. My 72 year old eyes and buckhorn sights don't mix well! So I shot from an improvised rest using a seat cushion. Group measures 2 3/16ths. Not too bad. I think I could improve it if I had a solid rest over sand bags. I don't know why I'm all off to the left. It's not the sights - "OilMan" tried it and he was right on.

By the way - big shout out of thanks to "OilMan" for taking an old dude out shooting!!!

I was out yesterday before the rain hit with a new to me 44 mag and 270.

How did Oilman like the 6.5 x55.....it surprises allot of folk...what bullets did he use ?

I don't think he was too thrilled with the 6.5x55. I had some 160 gr Hornadys and 120 gr Nosler plain base bullets.
