Hi everyone

No problems with the canadian customs just need to pay tax. But occasional US customs stops Canadians and if they do you are not going back to the US for 5 years. You are breaking US laws not Canadian. I have never been stopped by US customs going into Canada.
Legally,US dealers can't even sell to you as a non-resident. If you happen to buy something privately or at a gun show,be extremely careful. If you're caught exporting firearms and parts out of the US by BATF or US Customs, you're looking at serious prison time. I've had a shotgun barrel on back order from Remington through Gagnon's in Oshawa for almost a year. It's still not in,yet.
My understanding is if you get caught with a firearm or ammo purchased in the US without the export permit whether by Police (say stopped for speeding) or by Customs you are in a pile . My understanding is your staying at least another night in the US.
Canada doesn't mind.
One of the guys I hunt with worked for Canada Customs (just retired)and he bought a T3 Light in the US. As long as you file for the proper paperwork you're as he did. The trick is you have to do it a couple of months in advance.
Trimmer is right about the sellers though. I looked into it when I was in Sault, the sellers need to have and exporter license to sell to on residents and not many of them have it or at least that was the case in northern Michigan.. So, in addition to the paperwork you need to find a gun shop that can sell to you.

If the item you're wanting to buy in the US and take home with you is ITAR controlled then yes... You're "supposed" to have an export permit issued by the US DoS.
Many/most firearm parts fall under ITAR rules so... be careful.
Agreed x2, As a Canadian you won't be able to buy any parts from a reputable shop. If you do, as per the thread you are taking a pretty big gamble bringing things back crossing the border. There are a few places/gun shops in Canada that will import items for you from Gun Broker, Midwest Gun Works, The Barrel Exchange, etc.. Of course they will charge you a fee to do this.
The only think I know you can bring back across the border are bows/crossbows/muzzleloaders.
Yikes I bought a rifled barrel for my Mossberg at Bass Pro in florida 6 yrs ago when I was on vaction with the kids.I just threw it in the the back of the van thinking nothing of it or else I would of been sweating and studdering at the border.
Living on a border with Detroit I cross at least 2 times a week, as does my wife. All those trips I have only been stopped randomly by US Customs 2 times. Both times one officer asked me what I had purchased while another guy searched truck and a dog was used on the perimeter. Only had groceries and it took just a minute. My wife has never been stopped. But it does happen. Any firearm component will get you in trouble.
Call ahead, plan and document for customs beforehand is best advice I can give.
http://www.irunguns.ca. See if they can get it for
you. They can complete the paper work for a small fee. You are taking a chance but I am sure some of the internet police on this site have purhttp://www.irunguns.cachased scopes with out permits and did not get caught. Not worth the risk. Paper work can also can completed online.
Rumour has it and this had happened to a couple guys a friend shoots with, US Customs will follow vehicles with Ontario plates back to the border after finding them parked at gun shops on the US side and pull them in for secondary screening. This was at Buffalo gun center.
One note, if you are looking for regulations and permits to do this legally: the rules for shotguns and rifles differ. I think the paperwork even goes to different departments of the great government machine.
Another option is Prophet River http://store.prophetriver.com/import...s-and-handguns. I have a friend that has imported barrels and actions through PR without any hassle.
I have been stopped coming back through port huron before. I wouldn't want to get stopped and have the item in my possession!
So, what about choke tubes? Would they fall under these rules?

A friend of mine went over a couple years back to buy an old gun from an auction down in the US. the gun was taken out of commision so it couldnt be shot as the firing pin etc had been removed. when he tried crossing back into Canada the US guys checked him out and allowed the model gun across into Canada but the gun was taken apart into 2 pieces and he took one half home after paying the taxes and also had to pay the shipping to have the other half sent to him a week later. Friend told me it was there way of making sure nothing became an issue of safety...
My dad drives down to Fla every winter. He used to buy ammo down there and bring it back without a 2nd thought.
True. The incidence of US Customs stopping vehicles exiting the US is rare. Probably rarer still would be involving BATF agents.
While not a lawyer ( I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night)...I would say that if it's a first time thing, and as a Canadian citizen you didn't know the applicable laws, then it might result in a simple forfeiture of the firearms parts / ammo. But then again.....do you want to take the chance?
ignorance of the law is not an excuse.
Of course it isn't.
I did not say it was.
In the case of my father, and no doubt several other travelers. Often there is a degree of some leniency provided, particularly in the case of an individual with benign intentions, and not having any prior criminal background. Typically resulting in a forfeiture of the goods.
English comprehension gentlemen. Read the statement in context with what was provided after it.
With all the pressure from our justice department to stop firearm smuggling,I wouldn't want to be the guy that got stopped. I'll bet that they wouldn't cut you one inch of slack.
Thanks for all the info everyone, does anyone know of a site or place where I would be able to buy a browning BPS slug barrel here in Canada ? I'm from the niagara area....

Lake Huron Rod & Gun has them from time to time.
This site seems too good to be true. They import guns and sell them for less than the canadian dealers. At no extra cost. What's the catch?
You probably don't want to take the risk for a minimal money savings. If caught, you most likely will be arrested or fined.
The ammo is the same price as up here
With the dollar at 90 cents and falling now you're not going to save much anyways. Support your local shop:thumbup:
Depends.
He was buying boxes of 12 Gauge down there when they were on sale. Game loads were about $2 a box cheaper. Not a whole lot in the context of what was at stake, which is why he doesn't buy them anymore. He is however bringing back a Daisy Red Ryder for my son this year, since you can find them on sale down there for $19.99 sometimes.
Wouldn't risk it ever
I bought a rifle from Cabelas in the US and Prophet River looked after the exporting, importing, and registration (when it was the law). It cost me extra money, but I got a beautiful rifle that I couldn't find in Canada.
Here's another story: I once had some bullets shipped to a depot on the US side of the border. When I crossed into the US to pick them up, I told the US border guard what I was picking up. I got a stearn lecture and was informed about the fines and jail time. I was treated like I was a drug dealer. So I went to the depot and returned the bullets to sender, but that didn't stop the US Customs from stopping and searching my truck before crossing the border back into Canada. Lesson learned!
