I'm trying to prepare for all possibilities for my Alberta Elk hunt later on this year. Does anyone have experience with shipping or transporting their trophy across Canada? Information seems to be limited for some reason, and from what I have gathered so far it can be an expensive undertaking. This is all assuming I'm successful during the hunt, but I would like to try and budget for everything possible to make for a smooth trip. Thanks in advance:thumbup:
Where are you hunting? You may need to get a taxidermist to tag it, but if it comes from Wainright, leave it here and take home the memories
Still in the early planning stages with my girlfriend's father who is the Hunter Host, and haven't narrowed down an exact location as of yet. He has hunted in the Three Sisters Mountains area in the past, so that may be an option. I'm heading to Alberta in April as well, so a lot of the planning will happen then. I'll be staying in the Lac La Biche area before and after the hunt, so I'll see if I can track down a taxidermistQuote:

If it is "family" that you are hunting with, I do not know about legal things with regards to tagging, but you can box it up and ship it via Canada post, by air would be a horrible thing to do in my opinion, they charge for everything and you are lucky if it is not broken.Quote:

As for Three Sisters, it looks to be pretty close to the border. Not sure the exact location where they have hunted, but know it is somewhere in that general area. You can :
-Make a taxidermy mount there-and get it shipped to your address as other ppl say(truck,train,bus)
-Cut off the antlers with a piece of skull and split it in 2(clean the bone 100% from anything which is organic, best by boiling and scraping off)split antlers I believe is the term. Dry it, package it in a duffle bag(with your gear )and fly home. Here you can make a mount,with a piece of material and a wooden plaque.If done properly-it is really nice.
-Make an European mount there, fully completed with boiling,and bleaching the skull with peroxyde. Custom package it with a lot of hard cardboard, secure with about 2 rolls of duck tape ,and ship it as your 3-rd baggage allowance on the plane,at about 100$ .This way it is always with you-no worries about being lost ,delayed etc .Plus-you can admire your own workmanship.
Remember-fly WESTJET, no one else will fly animal antlers for you ,as such....They will take really good care of your trophy, and nothing will happen if you REALLY package it solid.

This year we are hunting 429, 326,328 WMU's the latter part of October. Base camp will be in 429. I use a .308 in a Savage 99 for Elk. I have a thing for lever actions. The only Elk I have shot was 27 yards with a bow out of the saddle in the Waldron. Elk went 5 yards and dropped. It was a 5x6. You have to look at which WMUs allow hunting of Elk without needing to draw and then plan from there.
I'm likely going out this fall to hunt with my uncle. I am going to try for mule deer myself.
WMU 339 would be good for you, unless you want to go into 440 or 316. 440 is the willmore wilderness, you would have to really research the area before you hunt there.
