Being named as agent for landowner....?

Ok question which I think any of the trappers here should know.

What form or paperwork do I need to carry to show an CO or LEO that a landowner has made me an agent to remove or control problem animals on the property? Something out of season( If the animal is in season it's just hunting as normal) or normally not allowed to be taken under a Hunting licence like red squirrels, when the animal is causing damage to buildings/pipes/killing chickens/eating every thing in the garden( veggie farmers).

My friends uncle has a lot of deer and submitted for deer removal permits with the MNR, in that case your information is actually put on the form (hunting license to show competence and phone number), that way you hold tags for that property only under specific conditions.

Not sure about small vermin

Correct me if I'm wrong but I heard that as an agent you may not keep the problem animal for consumption. I was told you must bury the carcass.

btw... I dont know why anyone would want to shoot deer out of season when theres a chance they are pregnant or have a fawn with them.

You have to understand something about nuisance control situations lad . They don't want them to breed or procreate . It's REMOVAL by usually death . REMOVAL is by not being nice, just get the job done . Taking out a pregnant doe is more decisive and in the end more humane . As an agent for a farmer , your asked to REMOVE permanently the problem and help in lowering crop damage .

And basically like 400bigbear said, the OMNR's deer removal program isn't meant for someone to partake in a year round deer hunting season in their woodlot, its a cull (generally) to remove deer that are causing property damage.

If your a agent for the farmer the famer fills out paperwork with your name address phone number and outdoors card number when the deer tags are issued they are issued in your name. You are responsible for deer tags and the paper work that is required you to fill out most time you will get 6 tags at a time . You can get paper work to give animals away best to get everything in writing from MNR for any other type of nusincenc animals . As fare as year round hunting tags have dates on them. The ones I have are good for shotguns with slugs .I carry bow out side designated area during bow season when I get problem area (orchard) I case bow and put on orange vest hat load gun and shoot deer if in orchard year round except when fawns born from April till sept

Don't know how you guys got on DEER, but lets turn the thread back to the question..

Form or type of paperwork I(you) need/should carry to prove to a CO/LEO that you are acting as an agent for the land owner, and not just shooting say raccoons out of season. A formal letter or a special form? Does anyone have any idea? Trappers have been doing this for years maybe I should have asked in the trapping forum.

Like in the case were a landowner has SMALL animals damaging buildings or eating crops/killing chickens/ducks.

I simply gave the trapper permission to trap beaver on the deer farm. He asked one time and I said certainly. That was it.

I would think he was trapping during a season. I am talking about the landowner that calls me to ask me to come remove something like squirrels or raccoons out of season because they are damaging property/crops/gardens. Things like woodchucks, pigeons, starling are not protected so they are easy. Coyotes, skunks, red fox have no closed season so are fair game. Raccoon season does not start till Oct, so what do you do when they are raiding the garden or hen house from April thru September?

I'm an agent for the local airport. They had to complete a form with all my information, hunting licence info etc., send it to the MNR. The airport got back authorization for me to act as an agent. As mentioned earlier, contact the MNR. They will assist you with the proper paperwork.

I had chance to call Thursday. I will have to call again. Lady on the phone told me to look on the web under "Exterimators". She tried but I don,t think she knew what I was talking about.

What do you control for the airport? Deer? Geese?

When you call back, ask to speak to a biologist or CO. The person who answers the phone could be a student.....

The biggest concern is deer. They make a real mess of a small aircraft.

Snow walker many of my jobs are simply verbal agreement , my municipal work requires more paperwork to satisfy insurance and wsib requirements of the municipality

ya that is why I just told her thanks. Figured there was no one else in the office. Afterwards I was thinking I should have call a bigger place.

ok the work would be out on private property. How do you explain to CO/LEO why you have dead raccoon/rabbits out of season or red squirrels I shot but no trapping license? Would a letter with landowners info that states that I have been to remove them work?

I'd suggest that may be a good idea , I'd also suggest you can prove that the animals you have taken are causing damage and that you took no more then necessary to mitigate the damage as the onus is on you to prove this

The law

You don’t need a permit to scare away, capture or kill most wild animals, if the animal is causing damage to your property.
You do need to follow certain rules.
Special rules apply to:

• endangered/threatened species
• moose
• white-tailed deer
• American elk
• black bear (capturing)

You can also use someone else to remove the animal for you, if they meet certain criteria. This person is considered a “wildlife agent”.

Who can be a wildlife agent

If you use someone else to remove the animal, they must meet at least 1 of these criteria:

• have a valid H1 Outdoors Card only to harass or kill wildlife but not to capture wildlife
• have a valid trapping licence
• be employed to control wildlife by a municipality
• be an Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals agent or employee
• be your immediate family member
• be a person that runs a wildlife removal business, but only to capture and release (not kill) the problem wild animals
• be authorized by the Ministry of Natural Resources

Rules for removing animals

You or your agent must:

• abide by all municipal by-laws and other applicable laws
• not harass, capture or kill more wildlife than is necessary to protect your property
• deal humanely with wildlife that is killed, captured or harassed
• restrict activity to your property
• not destroy the den of a furbearing mammal or a black bear without approval from MNR. Requirement for approval does not apply to fox or skunk dens
• release captured live wildlife within 24 hours
• release captured live wildlife within 1 kilometre of where they were captured
• release wildlife on private property only with the landowner’s permission

Wildlife agents can only act, if the landowner of the property asks them to. Property owners or their agents may dispatch captured wildlife if they do not cause unnecessary suffering.

Snowwalker. I'm not sure regarding the deer licences. My farmer friend has been told by the mnr that as long as he has crops in he can harvest the pest. In his case it is mostly wild turkey. I'm not sure how this differs from large game.

almost impossible to get one for corn damage its high value crops like apple trees that get the deer permits. after a few years of damage the mnr will re the damage and if still high they will issue permits year round except for late march till late aug

I will let you guys worry about the deer...go get them. I have been asked to remove/control raccoons and red squirrels. One is out of season when the landowner wants it done and the other never has an open season for hunting.

Never heard of MNR issuing permits or anything on wild turkeys for crop damage . Deer yes and some other critters but never turkeys . I'm not arguing but does seem odd although I can see them being a nuisance in some areas .
