TV Coverage On Nipissing
I've got a trip to the bungalows on Nipissing February 21st weekend with a group of 8 guys. It just happens to be the weekend the gold medal hockey game of the Olympics happens, and I was wondering if anyone knows if it is possible to get CBC out on the ice using rabbit ears.
I've heard about using rabbit ears and a digital converter box but I'm not sure about how to do it or if it's even possible up there. Any ideas are appreciated.
Cheers

Probably your best bet is a radio and listen to the broadcast. I cant seem to find a schedule at the moment but one of TSN 1050, FAN590 or CBC radio will likely have it.

My family has had place on Nipissing for over 40 years. As the NHL play-offs started to extend farther into the spring walleye fishing we finally got a small black and white to pick-up the games after fishing. Used to be no issues getting a signal but I have no idea what it's like now. Didn't the over the air signals change a few years back? More likely now a wifi or cell signal might be needed.
BTW the old shack of a cottage is now a year round home for my uncle and has just as many sat channels as I have in town.

I know in the past you would have been able to get a signal but I'm not sure what the scenario is now that the analog signal was ended.
I would love to hear what other people are doing out on Nipissing.

I currently still use an antenna for one of my tv's in my house here in mississauga. I only have basic cable and don't have or want to run cable in my bedroom . So I have an antenna and digital converter box set up and I can pick up 20 channels includig cbc and an hd version of the channel as well. However I cant say if you can pick up the signal in the area that you're talking about.

If any of your 8 guys subscribe to a satellite tv provider and has an extra receiver you can take a generator, a sat. dish with about 20 ft. of coax the receiver and a tv, fasten the dish to the ice shack, start the generator, line the dish up until you have signal and watch tv. Don't forget the remotes for the tv and the receiver

I have an antenna.. Out here By Bradford.. Get a few channels.. All in HD. All you need is rabbit ears and a new tv.. The flat screens are digital ready for over the air signals.. Channels like CBC should still be no problem getting.. Also not all of Ontario was mandated to convert to digital.. I know I sometimes pick up CTV from Peterborough... FuZy but I get it.. And its in the old style signal.. The nice thing with the digital channels ka if you get the signal you have a crystal clear 1080 picture.. Or you get nothing.. No more snow.

There is a site.. Think it is tvfool.com (not sure) but you can download an overlay for Google maps.. It will show you what channels you can recieve.. Its pretty good factors in terrain. Also will tell if its a digital or not.

CBC has the rights to these Olympic games. There will be some sort of split with other channels to provide coverage but guaranteed that the gold medal hockey game will be on the mainstream CBC channels.

there are a few operators on nipissing that have satelite tv and generators in their bungalows

I think you're $#*! outta luck without satellite.
There is no more analog signal for CBC on Nip. We have an older tv. at the camp with a big ol' antenna on the roof. HNIC was part of camp during hunting season and for spring walleye. We still don't know how we'll get it now.
We had the olympics on all weekend for our first bungalow trip 4 years ago. It was good times. We have the same trip booked during them this year.. gonna miss it.

I tried my old 12 volt portable TV last night to see what is available in the North Bay area and the only two channels that came in clearly were the local CTV station and CHCH from Hamilton (from to a repeater signal at a local tower).
At one time there were 5 channels that came in clearly but it looks like the TV air-wave signals are a dieing breed.

If anyone owns an android or iphone you can use that as a wifi hotspot to stream the games through a laptop...
-
I just got back and only 3 stations all analog. 2- global, 10- Ctv and chch on 32. Missed the leaf game cause we didn't bring the Apple TV box.
we won't let this happen again
-
Best to take a eliminator with laptop and connect it to an I phone with Internet access , you can find the game online and watch it
-
Thanks for the help guys, looks like I will try the streaming.

I have a camp on the Upper French and there is cell coverage that allows you to stream it onto your tablet or laptop. I've used an Iphone as a hotspot for laptop and streamed HNIC. We have also used a Roger's "stick".
I like your dedication to Canada's main activities ... hockey and fishing.

Haha...I don't want to have to leave the ice to watch it...you never know when they might be hitting!
